HELP: Starting - Choices/Questions [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-30-06, 11:05 PM Yo guys, im starting to DM witha group of 3 or 4 Players.
Im thinking of playing forgotten realms or eberron. ( i really dont know the diference / what they are / how to decide!!!

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks alot.

once i decide I am wondering where i can get maps (either for FR / EB , but just any good maps in general {preferably cities})

12-01-06, 12:59 AM -Well, our posts are going to be obviously biased, since this is the FR forum, after all. Anyway, the choice is yours to make, and yours alone. The Realms offer almost two decades as an official source, and many more as a setting for Ed Greenwood's stories. No setting has as much detail, rich history or critical thought put into it as the Realms. Eberron is much more "modern", and is a big, bad, dark, edgy, gritty, uninspiring (to me) setting, that is fairly new, and has many possibilities as to where it is heading.

-As for maps. Realmsian maps can be found in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, and Eberronese maps can be found in the Eberron Campaign Setting. And, of course, regional sourcebooks will have more detailed maps and information on that specific area.

12-01-06, 01:12 AM The Realms is a 'classic' fantasy setting influenced by practically every major 20th-century author of sword-and-sorcery and high fantasy, from Lord Dunsany to Fritz Leiber to Guy Gavriel Kay. Eberron is a more recent, 'edgy' setting influenced by things like the adventure pulps and movies. You can get an excellent taste of the Realms here (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2566/wellmet.htm), and an introduction to Eberron here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0786932740/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-8298773-2107816) (click Excerpt). You can also look at writing by their creators and see which draws you: Ed Greenwood's "Realmslore" (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archfr/rl) and Keith Baker's "Dragonshards" (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archeb/ds).

Of course you don't have to use a published campaign setting. If you do, choose one you like, or you'll be making work and headaches for yourself.

12-01-06, 02:06 AM -As for Netheril, you can download Netheril: Empire of Magic, the 2e sourcebook on Netheril from the WotC website for free. I suggest that you take advantage of all of their freebies. You never know when they'll take 'em away...
