History of the Realms..wont this be obosolete with new edition in a couple months? I mean, they're advancing 10 years and there will be a new novel.

Thoughts?

This tome will contain EVERYTHING up until the year 1375 (and I heard hints that it may go slightly beyond that).

The 4e FRCS will have all the history from 1375 to 1385 DR, so you won't miss a beat.

The GHotR will be an indispensible tome, that is for certain.

If anything History of the Realms will lead into FR 4E. Summaries of the past lore, hints at the future and all that.

-The information contained within AGHotR won't be obsolete. It will however, upon the introduction of 4e and the new FRCS, be incomplete to the new current time.

Per the FR Seminar, Grand History will advance the timeline some years ahead of where it is at currently. I do not recall the exact name of the year it ends at.

It ends in the year 2000. Y2K leads to Armegeddon in the realms.

It was stated in the seminar that the Grand History of the Realms will contain new entries up until the Year of Blue Fire (1385 DR). GHotR is intended to retain its value long after the release of the 4e FRCS in August, 2008.

A common theme from the Wizards seminars is that they intend to make products released between now and then useful for 4e campaigns.

WotC said that they won't retroactivly change things like they did in the 2nd->3rd Edition transition, so the information in the grand history should stay valid.

What Eric & Derren said. FR 4e won't be a retcon, so your book is still worth keeping.

And even if there were to be a retcon AGHOTR would still be one of the most useful books, IMO, produced in this decade. Just the pure amount of historical hooks you can place in your games will be mind boggling.

This is probably the FR book that I have most anticipated in my life.

Besides, as I mentioned, setting lore never really becomes "obsolete", and this book is supposed to be all about lore, not rules.

Awesome, so we get to see the changes next month, rather than next summer........

Well, I *do* hope GHotR doesn't contain spoilers for upcoming novels...

We accounted for the novel schedule to avoid spoilers when we put GHotR together and then the schedule seems to have been scrambled a bit.

This means that there may be spoilers for Paul Kemp's second book and Lisa Smedman's second book.

If you don't want to be spoiled, don't read past the end of 1374 DR to be sure.

Once I see the book, I can tell folks which pages to avoid.

You're a friggin hero Eric, they should make you one of the iconic NPCs.

Seriously, thank you for the effort you put in, it's truly amazing.

everything will be fine, well, w/ this book anyway. it's all historical supplement, not mechanical. that's the one thing that they tend to do right at least, specifically w/ Faerun. they usually stick to their guns, but only from a chronological perspective.
they can whatever they want w/ 4th ed., doesn't mean i'll adopt. it's their perogative, but as a consumer, mine is to buy or not buy and i'm leaning towards the prior. if i win it at Gencon, so be it, but don't expect to see me and millions in a bread line waiting for something that should probably be coming out in '10, not '08. just a thought.
Grand History will be good, writing for FR is generally better than most D&D text and it's generally a good idea to have a definitive point of reference for us, game designers, whoever.

I just hope that the book cover Spell Plague and what causes it and enough of the fall out so that WE can play during the Spell Plague. That's the biggest annoyance about this timeline jump, we're gonna be post Spell Plague.

Not necessarily. There is no real reason why you need to set your game in 1385 DR. You could theoretically set it at any point during the timeline. You just need to take into account what has and hasn't changed.

well, I saw Paul Kemp's second book out today. I know the second Lady Pentinent is coming out this week. So at least books will be out there prior to GHoTR
