I use a 3-stage method. - If the characters live in the same region and would get along with each other, they may start out being already friends, sometimes even relatives. - If the characters do not qualify for the first system but still might have some common interest, I set up an NPC who knows them both and arranges their meeting (usually to ask for their first quest). - If neither of the above can apply, a good in-combat meeting is IMO the best way to make characters that would normally stay away from each other ally in their quest. Of course, in a group some people will meet by system 1, some by 2, some by 3. For example, in a five-people party, there may be two elven siblings (1) that meet a human wizard while visiting the old elven sorceress of their city (2). During their first fight, they are joined by an half-orc druid and a dwarven barbarian (3) whose fighting prowess and promises of alliance persuade them to let them help in their quest. |

We've done the in-combat meeting, the tavern meeting (one time a brawl broke out-one of the PC's fault), the meeting on a ship while being invited to dinner with the ship's captain. As for a new PC entering into an existing game, usually we find him/her "wandering" through the woods and they, inexplicably, want to join the group. One time, we had TWO to join in. They were traveling together, the cleric in search of so-and-so's holy symbol and the other PC along with him as a traveling companion. One game, the PC's had already knew each other for a year before the game started. Not that many knew much about the others' past histories. I only knew for one other character, the Tormian cleric/fighter/paladin who later left on some side trip for his church (player had to drop out for personal reasons). |
