| Technomancer01-11-04, 07:01 PM | my group was debating this....the name of the surface drow clan in Cormanthor. So, how do you pronounce House "Jaelre"? |
| Maskanodel01-11-04, 07:10 PM | I've always pronounced it jail-ray. |
| dragonheart01-11-04, 08:27 PM | your question and teh previous answer made me stop and think - I have been pronaouncing it Jall (like shall) ray but the ae should make the a long (a true a sound) so it should be Jail-ray unless they are pulling the ae combo from anotehr language or from some very old variant of english. |
| Zanan01-12-04, 10:17 AM | Vendui! Well, it comes from a fantasy language and as such I do not always follow "English" pronunciation guidelines. Thus, we made /YELL - re/ out of Jaelre so far. Anyway, drow shall be pronounced that it is "pleasing to the ear" and thus you can use it in a way you see it fit best into your language - or setting. To my knowledge, there has never been an official guideline to the pronunciation of drow words (apart from the race (rhymes with "now") and its deities). |
| Crust01-12-04, 11:17 AM | I once read that all FR words and names are pronounced using all vowel sounds. In that case... JAY-el-ray is how I'd pronounce it. |
| Another Gnome01-12-04, 01:23 PM | EC posted this bit on the novel boards: ... the basic rules Ed Greenwood set down for Realms pronunciation: no silent letters, every letter is given time and weight. * * * Just for the fun of it, by the way, here's something from an old FAQ thingy: How do you pronounce...? Here are some commonly mispronounced words and their dictionary pronunciations where they are available and common-practice pronunciations or TSR rulings where they not.
