Hey, I can't figure out from all of your alls posts if the timeline is going to be advanced 10 years or 100 years.

Do we just not know? Initially I thought it would be 10 up until 1385, but now people seem to be posting that it will be 100. Do we have any detailed evidence one way or another.

The GhotR ends in 1385 DR with the Spellplague.

The ONLY thing we are told about the new FRCG is that it will take place AFTER the Spellplague is resolved.

Ergo, we can assume a date NO earlier then 1386 DR.

However, the other spoiler, and hints given in blogs and other threads, seems to indicate that the Spellplague will last FAR longer then a year.

The spoiler in The Orc King takes place a century from now, so many assume that is the new date. Unfortunetly, is really means NOTHING at all, and the date can be anywhere before that, or even several centuries after that.

We just don't know - but we can assume at least some sort of 'time jump', with 1386 being the bare minimum we can hope for (although HIGHLY unlikely).

That's correct.

where has that been stated?

I don't think it's been stated, but it seems only logical that if the point of the Spellplague (mostly) is to explain the 4E rule changes, then the 4E FRCG will at least be set after the Spellplague has taken place.

It could still be starting somewhere in 1385, shortly after or even during this Spellplague and the final events of GHotR.

Anyway, I doubt they'll start the campaign setting in the Year of the Halfling's Lament. :D (What's he lamenting anyway? The state of the new Realms?)

That is correct we got no idea of how far the TLA will be...which is funny because over at Eberron they announced two years Advancement...though later canceled. But Eberron Campaign guide is atleast a year after FRCG so they propably definitly know about it. My guess is that they are revising plans because the old one will bring a firestorm of anger...but we'll see.

actually, I had heard the exact opposite. Since the FRCS was coming out in August of this year it was well into development when the 4e was announced and therefore, was not too changeable. As opposed to the Eberron book set for 2009 which has plenty of time for changes

If it was well into developement then shouldn't they know how far the TLA is? And what will it give away telling us now?

If they told us when the time jump occurs, then we wouldn't have 15 separate threads about this very topic alone. Now would that be a good buzz generator?

true enough I guess the saying any advertisment is good advertisment.

Actualy I heard he likes kittens... a little too much
(If you read this Mr.Baker please understand it is just a joke...as I hope you guys eventualy confess that the last two years in the GHotR is...)

This is why it's not good to have the setting you like the most go first, but you still want it to go, unlike those other settings.

In order to explain the new 'magical traditions', the Spellplague will have to already have occurred and for the most part be resolved.

If they go the 'Sunder Switch', or any other 'alternate-reality' scenario, the new date could be as close as 1386 DR, but no closer. If they don't go that route, then we are looking at bare minumum of one human generation from 1385, so figure 1400+, or there abouts.

Or they could just as easily pull out all the stops and give us the century we dread.

Rich Baker has already stated directly that they're not allowed (yet) to comment on how far ahead the timeline will advance, or what date the new FRCG will be set in. All we can surmise is that it will likely be 1386 or later... possibly up to (or more than) 100 years later.

Wasn't there a comment from one of the designers that there wouldn't be any novels in and around the Spellplague? That to me suggests that we will be starting a fair bit later then 1385 DR, as WoTC seem to want to keep novels in the current year, save for the likes of Ed, Elaine and Salvatore.

 he must have had a bad year for his halfling pipeweed plantings

I think we'll have to say hello to the 15th century of the realms. A 25 year jump could have had enough time to bring the new wizard traditions in rising. With a little help from a new godess of magic.

I think what he said (I don't have the quote) was that there wouldn't be any novels explaining the Spellplague--that is, no novel about how Cyric snuck into Mystra's Realm and all that.

Here's a marketting thought for y'all. Suppose they go with two timelines? One would be complete with the Spellplague, etc., the other would be sans Spellplague; Realms and Realms Classic. That way they could keep both groups happy; those (like me, I confess) who say "Let's shake things up!" and those who say "It's great the way it is, leave it alone!". Then they could potentially rack up double the sales from those of us who are crazy enough to want both timelines while not alienating fans from either side of the fence. Meh, just a thought.

I'd be fine with that, but I doubt WotC would, because they don't strike me as being too keen on having TWO distinct timelines (it'd probably go against their mantra of making everything easier to understand).

When you think about it, once they decided to change the game around as much as they are, they were bound to make lots of people angry. Suppose they would have left things as is, there would have been plenty of, 'how can you explain this as things always being this way', etc.. etc... just like what happened with the new cosmology. This is how they managed the transition from 2ed to 3ed, and the people on these boards went nutso.

Instead they decided to manage things like the 1e to 2e transition, and make up a RSE. Honestly though, I can't imagine them advancing the timeline much more than 10 years. They already chose 10 pretty arbitrarily, around the idea of 'How long will it take to make things new and different, and a thousand points of light (what is this the 1992 Bush campaign or what, :), didn't work then and won't now....)'. Given this 'changeyness' they decided that 10 years was enough to change things around but not too long to have to drop all of the old lore and re-write everything. Think of all the new characters someone would have to invent.

Anyways, I am positively sure that they didn't spen much more time than this thinking about things, the designers seem to have become quite a little clique these days, and likely since they were convincing some higher up who knows nothing about RP games, much less the FR, who knows what the real thinking has been.......

I'm pretty interested in finding out the exact date because how my characters react will depend on when the spellplague comes to a close. To make things worse I have no idea how the spellplague would effect an archivist.
