I saw a thread in the character optimisation board that I thought was quite original. It was discussing ways that players wanted their character to die. Appling this to Forgottern Realms, I was just curious as to ways your past characters have died?

Well, all of my PC's have died at least once...here's how:

Name: Gallus Silverblade
Race: Aasimar
Class: Paladin
Sex: Male
How He Died: Fought a Balor single handedly to save his friends and though he slayed the Balor (even after being grabbed with the Devil and planeshifted to the Nine Hells of Baator), he then was slain by the poison the Balor injected into him through his bite. He and all of the prisoners of Dis's dungeons were rescued though in an incredble battle between Ilmater's avatar and Dispater (Ilmater won but Dispater survived).

Name: Reina Firebrand
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Barbarian
Sex: Female
How She Died: Killed after saving the Winter Wood Wild Elves by slaying an Ancient Green Dragon named Foulsunder. The dragon unfortunately had the last laugh as it fell on top of her when it died. Mielikki manifested at her funeral and after puting all of the other PC's through a test of compassion (which they succeded), cast true resurrection, and restored Reina back to life.

Name: Thordeck Skullcrusher
Race: Shield Dwarf
Class: Fighter/Cleric
Sex: Male
How He Died: Killed while defending the Shield Dwarf City of Ironfang Deep in the Vilhon Reach from a Mature Adult Red Dragon named Emberspeak. The dragon cast Weird and Thordeck died...but this time the PC had the last laugh. Thordeck had buyed enough time for his friends to get behind the beast. A volley of spells was all it took for Emberspeak to go down (Thordeck had already inflicted a good deal of damage)! Brought back to life by the head priest of Moradin in Ironfang Deep.

Name: Shayla Goldmoon
Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Sex: Female
How She Died: Killed by a high powered cleric of Shar. Shayla got the last laugh because she her soul became a Solar and blasted the Cleric (the Sharian was trying to sacriface Shayla but bungled the ritual by pronouncing a word wrong). Brought back to life by a High Cleric of Selune.

Name: Bryan Blackarrow
Race: Human
Class: Rogue
Sex: Male
How He Died: Killed by a meteor shower spell cast by an evil Archmage. Brought back to life by Mask in exchange for an ancient treasure being brought to one of his temples and burnt (Mask was actually trying to destroy an good paladin whose soul was imprisoned in a soul gem). Bryan tricked Mask by freeing the soul from the gem in a way that Mask didn't forbid before sacraficing it on the alter. Mask was forced to uphold his agreement by a manifestation of Ao himself (yikes)!

Name: Saria Evergreen
Race: Moon Elf
Class: Wizard
Sex: Female
How She Died: Killed after being charmed and drained of all her blood by a former elven lover from her past who was actually a powerful Vampire Lord. Resurrected in the nick of time before she became a Vampire and now is back to normal.

Back in 2nd Edition when I was more often a player, I had a human fighter that specialized in both unarmed combat the battle axe (who might have had some monk levels in converting to 3E if he'd survived)... he was involved in a magical accident that merged him with his magic battle axe, which later he discovered allowed him to transform his body into a living steel suit of armor. I suspect my DM at the time was a big fan of X-Men comics.

Anyhow, Flint Stonefist met his end in the midst of a great red wyrm's flaming breath weapon (something about a failed save, and a molten pool of player character). Later, he was forged into a magical battle axe. Rest in piece, Flint... I miss ya.

My most recent death, today: 16th level character whirlwinds 5 low level demons, 61 damage to each.

These demons hurt everyone within 30 feet the same as how much they take. (Wow that was worded poorly.)

305 damage. Not good. But funny :)

I've lost four characters in 3.0.

The first was a 2nd level gnomish bard that got nailed by a sleep spell and than coup de graced.

The second was his replacement, a 3rd level paladin of Pelor, who got nailed by a sleep spell and than coup de graced.

The third was the paladins replacement, a 6th level wild elf barbarian, who happened to be followed by an NPC assassin in the party order and than made a successful assassination.

My cleric who replaced the paladin is alive and kicking at 12th level so far.

In another campaign I have a halfing wizard who died holding an alley against a horde of gnolls who if they passed would of overwhelmed my party which was preoccupied with the rest of the ambush. I was finally cut off, surrounded, and crited past my magical defenses leaving only 2 gnolls alive out of 9. Not bad for a 3rd level wizard! He got ressurrected.

I had one (and only one) 2nd edition character, a dexterious fighter. Our group was inside a city whilst it was being attacked by an orc hoard. We rode valiantly out on to the battle field and bravely attacked the BBEG and his personal bodyguard. My character, named Avenial, was dropped by a crossbow bolt in the third round of combat - she was weaponless and fleeing the battlefield.

My first character (1/2 elf ranger3) was taken prisoner by dwarves and sent to work clearing mines with about 100 other prisoners. My party escaped and we found an exit. Only to find a dwarven group sent to kill us, (the secret couldn't get out). I faced off against a dual hand axe weilding dude and lost...

Then my friend tried to carry me down the mountain. rolled a 100 on climb (2nd ed)... 85 damage later I'm at the bottom of the mountain first and in 12 parts.

NOT RAISED... couldn't find pulped up body parts

My last played character died a horrible death.

Qevelias Amastacia - Moon elf rogue 4 / wizard 3 of Tymora
( hence the user name ! )
Trying to save Murran from an invasion of Hill Giants and Ogre's , he kissed his holy symbol , prayed to his lady luck and tried to stop one of the first supporting groups. They where bringing carts full of throwing boulders for the already sieging Hill-giants at the gates. His party was helping the city from inside , so he was all alone. Would he have succeeded , than his party would have been able to hold the giants at bay. After his bolts and spells were out and killed 4 hill giants alone , he got smashed by 4 boulders. Later that day the giants and ogres roasted his body and had a nice Elven snack. Raising him from the dead was out of the question. I really loved playing him , despide the fact that I'm not verry fond of rogues and wizards ! Currently I'm playing a Drow Bard 6 that goes by the name of Chazsmyr Coborel. He's writing a story about Qevelias for a dramatic play.

Last character Death:

Rufus Longfellow, 5th level Speciality Priest (2ed)/4th Level Cleric(3ed) of Arvoreen.

Died on our first combat in the new third ed combat system. Charged a Dire Bear when it was explained the bear was like a "Cave Bear". After casting Humansize and making it to the Bear before anyone else, proceeded to take over 50 points of damage and we still hadn't rolled for the bear's last hit on me.

It was Brutal.

Mostly, I'm a DM now, and of the last two characters one survived a TPK to save the pieces of an artifact we were collecting by teleporting away, and one is on hold during the summer months.

My last character, Yeléna, (moon elf female cleric of Sehanine 7) had to get fried by a fireball trap that the party rogue failed to disarm but set off instead.

I'm still waiting to get resurrected. :P

Croga Flamddwyn ... my first AD&D character, a 9th level Votary (Paladin kit) of Tyr.

At the end of the Night Below campaign, duell-wielding a bastard sword Defenders +4 and a Sunblade, wearing a Girdle of Frost Giant Strength, Shadow Dragon scale (AC 0 ... those were the days ...) and somesuch ... fell seconds after the final battle of that campaign. After slaying the baatezu congregation, the group of six had just one survivor ... the mage who had been resurrected & raised three times before . :D My fellow died from the poisonous bite of one of the fiends ... but we all were resurrected by one of the finest DMs I've ever come accross.

I've not lost a character in the FR (or any other setting either... ::knocks on wood:: ). but a couple of my friends have....

Raven--Part tiefling fighter/barbarian: Died once charging into an orcwort and getting slapped around by the vines (this was after nearly getting killed earlier by it and running back to the cleric for healing) Later Miracled back by my cleric.

Died again when he got demon-possessed by Gargauth and came charging at my cleric and attacked her. She hit back. Although both players critted, the cleric was the only one left standing afterwards. He was brought back by his goddess, Elistraee.

Del--Full Drow female sorcerer/cleric/dragon disciple/mystic theurge: Died only once when a famine spirit critted and bit her head off her body (vorpal bite). She was carried over to my cleric (same PC as above) by the tiefling fighter and true rezzed back to life the following morning, much to the relief of her half-drow lover. (he didn't see it happen)

Cletus McGigglesticks the III. While making a hasty escape out of an inn my character slipped on the floor and hit his head on a post and died. Having a con of 3 and 7 hit points didnt help though.

Sasha Tealight aka "The Golden Songbird":
Bard/Cleric of Sune
Sun Elf

Died: At mid levels Sasha and a fellow party member were on watch in a mountainous forest one night. Her companion spies something in the night sky, and awakens the party. Sasha doesn't see it (Botch Spot check). Everyone gets up and looking into the sky. Cries go up as a red dragon decends upon us. Sasha still doesn't see the dragon (ANOTHER botched Spot) and doesn't feel its fear affect.

"What red dragon?! I don't see nothin'!!"

Players roll initative; dragon is first to act. Flames come down on us. Four characters dodge the flames perfectly or are immune to the deadly fire. Sasha, poor Sasha, never saw it coming and was struck down to -23 hp.

She was brought back to life, which she thanks everyone graciously for. However she cried for the next three days because nothing could be done about all her blond hair being burnt away.

A first level halfling rogue. The very first trapped chest that he ever experience, was coupled with the worst die roll that I've ever made. The result? An arrow trap being set off, and a dead rogue. Stupid 4 hp .

Talon Detarrias
Human Fighter (mid level)

This guy was tough. In one adventure he survives fire giants and red dragons. Then, as we cheesily fly to challenge the final batch of said fiery villains on griffonback, we come accross another dragon. Breathes flame, everyone in the party, and their griffon makes the save. Except my griffon. He plummets to the ground in a ball of fiery feathers. But HAH! I have wings of flying, I survive the adventure.

Next adventure, we explore a MASSIVE dungeon with an extraordinarily large amount of undead. We hack through hordes, and hordes of undead, although our druid had summoned a phoenix(not sure what spell, but hey he provided the pizza so we let it slide) Finally as we exit the great hall stepping over piles of undead, we enter a small room, with a dozen regular appearing skeletons. Of course we all charge in to hack away. They are EXPLODING skeletons. So after all of these and many other challenges, I am slain by bone debris. How shameful. That was the only TPK I've ever experienced. Luckily that phoenix was still around to ressurect most of us. Needless to say after that, we just went home (literally and in game.)

I´m allways the dm so i never died (or rather most of my chars seems to meet horrible ends at the hands of the players) but my player died once...

Therom LN Human Male Clr 3 of Gond.

He died while trying to eridicate a mine from a goblin invasion. he singelhandely slew a lot of the mayor NPC (the elf mage who was part of the group didn´t even kill a single goblin... never seen so many 1:s rolled by a player....) but back to Therom. he had just cleared the first level of the mines... cleared it all but one goblin with a mace. the goblin charged and therom stood there laughing. what followed turned out to be one of the most bizzare fights the group has seen! the goblin started making criticals while the cleric seemed to be unable to hit the goblin! (a feat in itself... considering the goblins AC). therom died as a hero since he managed to kill the goblin but later fell to poision from the goblins mace... since that encounter my players never have below 27 in AC

conclusion: he died by weird rolls. never rule out the pure chaos rules of gaming (ie never loose track of the dice importance...)

I don't play enough to have PCs die, but I have slain an entire party once back in 2E when they broke the seal entombing a drow lich...

After the entire party (save the cleric of Mystra) had been killed in several ways, the only survivor was the dwarven fighter (12th level). He was trapped in the lich's crypt, and the lich's prismatic wall barred the exit. Since the dwarf (named Drugar) had so many hit points and his spell saves were so high, the lich just watched as the cloudkill within the crypt slowly ate away at the dwarf. The spell ended before Drugar died, so, throughly annoyed, the lich walked through his own prismatic wall, wrestled with the battered Druger, and eventually dragged the dwarf through the prismatic wall, bringing a messy end to the whole encounter....

The cleric of Mystra who fled the scene (the guy playing him had to leave the game early) eventually returned and defeated the lich singlehandedly. It was a crowning moment for the entire group, DM and player alike.

We always made jokes about how difficult it was to kill Drugar. He had survived being hurled hundreds of yards by a hill giant, and an avalanche caused by an eartquake spell cast by a powerful cleric of Cyric.

I don't recall ever having a character die. My play group had some interesting deaths though.

Malish, the monk, had never been touched until we were 7th level. He died at the hands of a Slay Living spell from a cleric of Mask.

I a different campaign, the whole party, except for my character, was slain in Waterdeep. The rogue double crossed us to clear the bounty on his head and was double crossed himself. My character was arrested before the slaughter, but was released due to his Harper membership.

I must be lucky or something.

Well my favourite gnome illusionist Zook Garrick died at lvl12 then lvl13 permanently turned to stone on the astral plane by gith-monkey losers...It was the dms fault coz he forgot to make me roll a scry check against scry sensor...So I had no chance at all...My whole party died coz of this...BUT THE WORST THING was that I HAD LOST MY SPELLBOOK!!! AAAAAA...
