I’m running a campaign with 5 mid-level players, in the Forgotten Realms. My players are a human Evoker of Mystra Wizard11, a halfling Rouge3/Ranger5, an elven Ranger6/Fighter4 of Miellikki, a dwarven Fighter8 of Marthamor Duin and a human Cleric9 of Talona (and member of the Cult of Dragons, without the other PCs knowing this)

The thing is, my players have found something that could on the long run destroy a big part of Faerûn, but everyplace they talk about it with someone more powerful than them, laughter becomes the answer they get... and with reason. Well, so the players have recently decided to go at it. With an artifact that gives tremedous power (one of them will find it next session...) they will have to face a Lich that is trying to become a god. The plot thikens much for me to write it here, but my basic question is this:
There will be a moment where the players will have to talk directly to their God (or Chosen, or High Cleric, or Archdruid, etc...) where acording to their behaviour it will tell them to sacriffice their own life for the well-beeing of thousands or millions (obviously Talona won’t say this...for example)...

What would be a good reward, or a good DM decision if we have played these characters since level 3, and for a couple of years?
Let’s say the bodys wont exist anymore, ‘couse a big piece of space rock will fall on top of them...
Simply resurection? Give the players (probably it will be only one player to do this) some free levels (1 or 2)? Make it the Chosen One of the Deity (considering they are L8-11, with max + Leveles throughout the campaign they’ll be some lousy Chosen Ones)?

Please send some ideas, ‘couse this is the most important part of my adventure, but I still haven’t figured it out...

PS: Also posted in DMing, please excuse me, but I didn't know where it fit best.

It could be the beginning of a Ghostwalk campaign :) If you do tis, I'd reward them all with +1 level of experience and a nice magic item.

The problem with resurrection is that if the players sacrificed themselves for the good cause, the sacrifice won't have much meaning. This is an option I wouldn't likely use.

You could also have them merge with their deity on their deity's home plane, or transport them there, reward them and not have them be able to return to Faerûn itself. This would mean that they started having adventures on their deity's home plane and beyond.

You could at the last moment have their deity transport them to their own plane and rewarded. Since that characters were willing to sacrafice themselves the Deity could have saved them, some type of test.

Also if they die on the Forgotten Realms, also could like the other dude said play them on their deities realm or even bring them back with the PrC Risen Martyr from the Book of Exhalted Deeds to do one more quest before their deity transports them to a new Plane or even make up a Demi-Plane perhaps.

Also consider if you chose to bring them back as a Risen Martyr that the Mists of Ravenloft come in sucking them away.

PLENTY of IDEAS!!!!

Also a nice treasure reward and +1 Level placeing their exp to the min of the next level is always nice. Treasure Item should varey on the amount of participation.

Also just cause a deity is evil, it dont mean they wont "Aid" good for the better cause. Since Faerun dieties power is decided by their followers on Faerun, Talona could get her cleric to aid the others, perhaps doing something else as well to further her own interest. Sometimes its best to aid the Devil you know than allow the Devil you dont come to fruit and destroy Fearun and your worshipers along with it, hehe.

anyways hope to been a helping hand here!

More than a helping hand, thanks!
I haven't thought about changing planes, I think the players won't like to play in a different plane, but the 'last quest' option I find really interesting... The problem is making this quest so that every player has the same goals, or at least pointing the same way..
Thanks again
