| Kjartan07-19-03, 11:52 AM | So, how does one go about killing a demi lich when you are a cleric? Any inputs?:) |
| GoodOlWillickers07-19-03, 11:55 AM | It's actually pretty simple when it's all said and done. You don't. Go kill gods, they're nothing compared to a demilich. Peace -Will http://www.angelfire.com/md2/willspalace |
| Kjartan07-19-03, 12:03 PM | That is actually what I'm close too concluding with. But you see, I find that my character has no other option, destroy or be destroyed... The lich (now demilich) in question joined our party, starting out neutral, then killing an angel and hey presto he was evil. My character, a cleric/sacred exorsist (at the time) should I suppose never have allowed for this lich to join, but thats how it goes. ANYWAY, I've now decided its time for a showdown. I've been away for the summer, while the others have played, reaching 25th level (I'm currently 18th, but about to adjust my character) and the lich has now become a demilich, and quite a bother too. So, when we meet again, I plan to kill or be killed. It should also be said that I have a fair amount of gp to spend on magic items that could be of assistance... Irritating isn't it (aren't I ;) ) |
| Gotrex07-19-03, 02:29 PM | The main problem iv had with demi liches in the past is that they just kill you so fast your often dead before you can really do anything best bet is to just pile on protection gear for everything you can think of especialy undead and spells and then get a weapon that really hurts undead (killing the thing will probably cost most of your gold unless your very rich) are you gonna be facing the thing with your party? if so then you have a pretty good chance of winning with the right equipment if your gonna try face it alone chances are your paladin's soul is gonna end up in the demi lich's collection :) |
| Kjartan07-19-03, 03:58 PM | I'm currently planning to face the thingest alone... Does anyone know where I can find information on demiliches? But surely, Lathander will save the day... |
| Baron Phylos07-19-03, 04:23 PM | 1- Find its Phylactery. 2- Eat it, yes, eat it. *Should* work. |
| Gotrex07-19-03, 05:05 PM | Destroying its phylacery wont kill it it means when someone actualy does kill it that it wont resurect but untill that happens it will be alive and well |
| Kjartan07-19-03, 05:08 PM | I'm not even sure Demiliches have phylacteries anymore... |
| AvonRekaes07-19-03, 05:36 PM | I suggest bying a multitude of Fortitude Save increasing items, and by extension Constitution increasing items. Also, make sure you cast Death Ward and Negative Energy Protection on yourself before the fight. Death Ward will increase your save against Trap the Soul by +5, and Negative Energy Protection will negate the negative levels for succeeding the save. Then you should probably hit it with Holy Smite, or attempt to turn it, depending on how high your turning check is. (See Amulet of Undead Turning). Wait... I got confused, are you a paladin or a cleric? |
| GoodOlWillickers07-19-03, 05:40 PM | Originally posted by Kjartan I'm not even sure Demiliches have phylacteries anymore... I don't think they do. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if they ever did. A demilich is a lich that's so old that its body has decayed. Wait a second, I've got an idea. For a lich to become a demilich takes hundreds or even thousands of years, so bring that to the DM's attention. To correct this he could have Ao come down and give an official apology to the cosmos for letting a temporal impossibilty exist (you don't turn into a demilich over night, after all) and since the demilich technically shouldn't exist, he'l just go poof and Ao will give you bajillions of gold pieces to compensate you for the loss of the beloved party demilich. Or your DM will just say that you're full of baloney then tell you to sit down roleplay the Imprisonment spell. Peace -Will http://www.angelfire.com/md2/willspalace |

Just about all of it... At least in 3.0 A demilich can only be made from a lich, who has a phylactery. It keeps the phylactery and infact gains a special ability that transfers the powers of items strewn about it to the demilich. (Since the demilich can't really wear anything but a hat anymore) Also, the rest of their body doesn't decay, it's left behind. They concentrate all their essence into one portion of their body which is part of the reason they get more powerful. And, it only takes the time to create 8 Soul Gems to become a demilich. |
| Ilbreth Shadowblade07-19-03, 05:57 PM | Cat it's head off!!!! ...no, wait - that won't work :D Does anyone know where I can find information on demiliches? Epic Level Handbook  BTW - has anybody encountered a demi lich that didn't use the scull as it's 'body' - mayby a foot or a rib cage :D |

| GoodOlWillickers07-19-03, 06:26 PM | Whoopsies... |
| Tzalice Minoladir07-19-03, 07:03 PM | well, you're an epic level cleric... maybe your diety will help you :). I mean, the demi-lich DID kill an angel (=not nice). I know in Greyhawk, Pelor has the ability to destroy ANY undead pretty much at will without a save really (IIRC, if there is a save, it's BIG). If you're a cleric of Lathlander, that'd be VERY good in helping you defeat it. This may or may not work, but get really really hurt, say down to like 1 HP, planeshift to the positive energy plane, with someone else who's also down to like 1 hp (preferably a barbar or ftr). You'll be healed 100d6 pts. Make sure you have good concentration. Everytime you or your companion get too close to full hp have him attack you with something like a longsword (hope he doesn't crit too often ^.^ or use a wand of Magic Missile or burning hands--you'd need 2 wands) it won't do too much damage, but should keep you from blowing up like the plane tends to make you do, also the concentration won't mess you up. Cast gate and summon the demilich. You should get a surprise round, cast dimensional anchor on the lich and 2nd action planeshift out with your barbar friend. ^.^ That would take care of him, and yes, I did just make up that strategy right now out of the air, so it may be completely illogical. But y'know. try to fight on consecrated ground with an altar in the area. If not that, there's the chance of antimagic zone. It can fly, but that's about it in the area. Maybe get gazeblind goggles or something to protect against that trap the soul. The Deathward/Neg En Pro should help. Try to turn it in an antimagic or consecrated corner. Sure they'll teleport away, but if it's consecrated, you have a +6 to turning check and he should have less HD than you. so you might get a destroy roll... |
| Kjartan07-20-03, 06:17 AM | LG Cleric of Lathander with the sacred exorsist prestige class. He doesn't really like undead much... Thank you very much for your inputs, I'm gonna spend a fair amount of cash on constitution score and fortitude save items. I guess I also should have a descent weapon if I ever get near the thing. Its truly irritating, because I don't think I can beat him... |
| Astanphaeus07-20-03, 08:32 AM | Originally posted by Kjartan Its truly irritating, because I don't think I can beat him... There is always a way. ;) I can tell you if I was your DM, the thing would have some sort of weak spot... it'd just be a question of finding it. I'd be wondering what the old skull is thinking. Raw power could very well not be the way to defeat it... you might have to outsmart it or trick it somehow. Distract it with something it wants, maybe... send it on a wild goose chase, or lure it into some sort of trap. Get it peeved at a god. Cite the doctrine of an evil deity that it'd vehemently disagree with. Get it riled up. Maybe it'll go hunting the god down... then you win, no matter who gets taken out. ;) Those thoughts aside, the fact that you're a ridiculously high level cleric of Lathander has got to be able to garner you something. A creature like this is a big enough deal to warrant major attention, I'd think... and I can only assume that your character has serious clout with the church. Perhaps a wide-scale coordinated prayer between a network of temples across the Realms (during the dawn, of course) could infuse you with enough divine power to wollop this thing or imprison it... Hell, it might even be cause for a full-scale crusade... or a summoning of a legion of angels. You also should be able to garner some extra-planer assistance, I'd assume... maybe even immediate proxies of the Morning Lord himself. Bottomline, though, is that this thing could conceivably take down nations, nevermind a single cleric. The conventional "hack the monster" approach just may not be viable, no matter how much you prepare for the battle beforehand. Frankly, I think you need to come up with some other options. Think outside the box... or coffin... or whatever. ;) Your character is one of the most powerful people in the world. There's gotta be a way you can use that to your advantage. Just, if you do confront it, make sure you're in the middle of the desert or something, for everyone else's sake. ;) |
| Kjartan07-20-03, 08:45 AM | True, Astanphaeus. Indeed I think this whole matter is beyond me (as a 2nd year player). I've already been in several situations where my character would know a whole lot more than me (but I guess that would be the case anywho, since I'm not, nor will I ever be an übermench). Besides from gathering the forces of good, I will deal with this out of play. The player playing Demilich is "the main DM" who said we couldn't play evil characters... Thanks for everyones opinions and alternativ strategies. You have been truly helpful. |
| Klyden07-20-03, 09:53 PM | Ask a Solar to help you fight it or outsmart it by trapping it then destroying it in the trap. Just be sure of one thing, FIND IT'S PHYLACTERY AND DESTROY IT! Heck, damaing it's phylactery will probably summon it to you anways (with it intending to consume your soul in a tiny gem on it's tooth). Remember, don't take this thing on alone! Get help! Heck, get two Solars or thre Solars and a Planetar to help you defeat it! Never face such a monstrousity on your own...it's a bad tactic...unless you have reserve troops to call in when your almost defeated...the problem with that strategy is unfortunately a Demi-Lich will probably try and trap your soul every single blasted turn it has! Still, a Solar on your side never hurts! :D |
| Straploknight07-20-03, 11:42 PM | You could always use a sword of sharp..... naw that was 1st or 2nd Ed. |
| inci07-21-03, 10:26 AM | well, you are currently lvl 18 ? A Demilich is ECL 30+ or something. Just give your DM a kick from me pls. |
| Tzalice Minoladir07-21-03, 12:43 PM | It might like cupcakes... offer it a cupcake and it'll be happy. Seriously, doesn't your DM realise it takes 100s if not 1000s of years for a lich to become a demilich? Oy... take leadership, use your 1st level commoners as bullet fodder. The lich can only trap so many souls in a 24 hour period. :D Of course... you'll lose your followers, but :) |
| Kjartan07-21-03, 01:28 PM | thank you :) heaps |
| Klyden07-21-03, 03:25 PM | Originally posted by Tzalice Minoladir It might like cupcakes... offer it a cupcake and it'll be happy. |
| Aelreth07-22-03, 05:36 PM | Find it's Phylactery and destroy it. Teleport to earth. 'Purchase' an extremely powerful (40MT range they have at least 10 I believe) Thermonuclear device from Russia "I will trade you a 'canteen of endless vodka' for that nuclear weapon "SOLD!" Gate it nearby the local demilich, create an epic version of Otiluke's Resilient Sphere so that it envelops a mile radius (make sure you cast it so that the lich and the nuke are inside) Give the nuke a few Holy/Holy Power/Bane/Dread Undead enchantments Detonate the nuke The Shockwave should bounce back and forth inside of the sphere for quite sometime but the demilich probably get ticked off at you since it most likely has Safe time |
| Desies07-22-03, 06:34 PM | aelreth...that's genius! |
| The_Sleeper07-22-03, 06:37 PM | HAHA!!! |
| Aelreth07-23-03, 06:34 AM | That combo should kill virtually anything. Now that I think about it so long as the shockwave lasts over 6 seconds Safe Time won't work. |
| The_Sleeper07-27-03, 12:46 AM | Make a Bone Mask and use that. it will protect you from all the Demilich's non physical abilities, including trap the soul. |
| BITING-GNOME07-29-03, 03:37 PM | If its any consolation at least you get a save from being trapped. Try to get a huge fortitude save. That should help alot. The books in front of me and thats the only save youll need for someone of your level. But take there advice- find the phylactery. |
| Israfel66607-29-03, 05:14 PM | As soon as you put your hands on the phylactery* just plane shift yourself and the item to Lathander's divine palace in Elysium or wherever it is. Let's see if the demilich comes there. You can take all the time you want (and probably ask a few celestials for assistance) to destroy the phylactery. *any demilich worth his skull will have shrouded the phylactery in about thirty dozen chain contingiencies and epic guards and wards-like spell, plus a few DC 400 fiend-crafted mechanical traps just in case of nasty antimagic fields. But I don't think that its player (as a player only - no offense meant) is worth his own skull - nevermind the demilich's. Oh, and slap the DM with your PHB and ELHB tied together for allowing a mere, humble, miserable 25th level wizard become a demilich. Just to make an example, Larloch has been a 30th level wizard and a mighty lich for a few millennia and he hasn't turned into a demilich yet. To balance things out, you should be allowed at least one of the followind: a) Transformation into solar b) Chosen of Lathander c) Proxy of Lathander (effective Divine Rank 1) d) Fifteen free Epic Hierophant levels |
