How would you rate Players guide to Faerun? [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-06-04, 10:26 AM How would you rate Players guide to Faerun?

Im lookin maybe to buy 1 or 2 books soon - gold pieces have been pretty scarce lately - Does P/Guide to Faerun have all the other prestige classes that was in FRCS and Magic of Faerun, what else of interest is there within its covers. Would it be better than Races of Faerun in your opinions?

07-06-04, 01:18 PM The PGtF is pretty good and it does update all the PrCs in the FRCS. It's only real downfall is the seemingly infinite number of typos and errors.

07-07-04, 12:24 AM Honestly I would rate it fairly low, my major complaint was that I felt that it spent entirely too much time on the regional feats.

Yeah, they're nice and in concept a REALLY cool idea, but in my campaigns, new character creation is a rare event. Characters tend to stick around for years before new ones are created, in fact longer than versions of the current gaming system. (2e vs. 3e vs. 3.5)

I wanted and expected more background and hooks for adventuring since new character generation is only a VERY small percentage of my games, I don't want it to take up 30% of my supplements.

I wouldn't buy it again if I had it to do over.

07-07-04, 01:47 AM I love the PGtF. My favorite stuff is all the info about the planes. I refer to those pages quite extensively. I like the new feats and all the spells. If you are playing 3.5 Realms you gotta have the PGtF to have all the most up to date versions of rules and such! It's also a pretty good one-stop-shop for creating new Realms characters. Pretty handy to have everything in one place.

Aside from the typos and errors already mentioned, it feels like it's nothing more than a very expensive update. And it also contains information which I wouldn't call player info like the chronology of events regarding the Shades.

I'm also floored at how the 3.5 Simbul's Spell Matrix, her Enhancer, and her Trigger spells are now pale figmants of their former 3.0 glory. Those spells are practically laughable now!

Whatever. I bought it. I suppose that's all that matters.

If you are a very rules oriented person and are trying to stay on top of the latest rules for spells and such, its a nessesity.
No, not all PrCs are covered, only those that needed updateing.
If you plan on useing Toril's cosmology, the book is a must.

Personally, I didn't like the regional stuff either, but considering some people wanted more of it, I guess it's a matter of taste.

As a whole, the book has a sort of disjointed feel, but that should be expected from a book that main Purpose is to upsate things from seveal other books.

I loved RoF, its Fluffy!!!!

It's a compleatly different kind of book.
As the FRCS and PgtF say "Drow live underground" or that "Red wizards are from the ruling Mulan"
RoF tells the story on WHY Drow live underground and what a "Mulan" is.

07-07-04, 05:39 PM PGtF is a good book if you treat it as it is meant to be: A rules update with a few extra goodies. IMHO, it is a better buy than Races of Faerun; most of the info obtained in the latter pales in "fluffiness" to stuff that's easily available and portable from previous editions, such as FR11 Dwarves Deep (only $4 as an electronic software download!) or Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves. Would I buy PGtF over Silver Marches? Probably not. But it is useful.

07-07-04, 10:33 PM The only reason I won't buy Silver Marches is because it's 3.0.

Another gripe I have is with the new Elminster's Eppuration spell. It no longer provides protection against supernatural abilities, which COMPLETELY contradicts Elminster's use of the spell in Crown of Fire. That mistake just broke my heart, since that scene is so cool.

I gave that change the old :rolleyes: .
