I am lost. [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-09-08, 11:54 PM I am new to Forgotten Realms and I would like to know of a series that would be good to start reading. I was going to start reading the legend of Drizzt series but R.A. Salvatore has already written like 7 books deep into the series. If their are any suggestions please post. Thanks. Peace and GOD BLESS

04-10-08, 01:03 AM Can't say I read too many novels, but I'd suggest either the Cormyr trilogy or the Elminster series. The Erevis Cale series is supposed to be excellent as well, although I can't say I've ever gotten around to reading them.

04-10-08, 01:30 AM -The best place to start is to pick up a Realms of X short story anthology. There are numerous ones, with topic ranging from the Arcane to Undead, and everything in between. As short stories offer insights into various places, people and events in Faerūn's history, you'll get a great introduction to the setting. From there, you can pick up novels that interest you. For example, if a story about Elaith Craulnober interests you, you can then purchase novels that feature him. And so on...

My personal favorite (although I also loved the multiple Drizzt series and others mentioned here) is Rich Baker's Last Mythal series. For a close second on my list, Paul Kemp's Erevis Cale books are also great.

Make that almost 20 or so books in the Drizzt series.

I wouldn't let that dissuade from reading the books, though, as a lot of people seem to enjoy them. You could also try novels by other authors, such as Ed Greenwood, Elaine Cunningham, and Paul Kemp.

04-11-08, 01:12 PM I don't think you can reach any kind of consensus around here - I think the reason why I liked the Moonshae novels is because they really didn't have anything to do with the Realms (much). Every time an author writes about a well-known region, the tears in the fabric of reality are increaed exponentially.

I read one Harper novel - Red Wizards - and have NOT been able to bring myself to read ANY others, despite all the good things I've heard.

Not even Elaine of Ed's.

Even the word 'Harper' makes my skin crawl now....

Darkwalker on Moonshea baby! Picked that rascal up on the first printing. Definetly among my favorite Realms novels

04-19-08, 10:33 PM Yay, I'm back (for now).

I would suggest Ed and Elaine after reading Bob Salvatore. Richard Baker's The Last Mythal unless you still got plans for Myth Drannor in a campaign. I would also recommend Erevis Cale (except that I haven't read any of the early novels, lol). After that just expand with the novels that carry forth the canon (drow books, elminster books, elf books, red wizard books etc).

Now if you are a hard campaigner, you probably shoudn't read too many of those. Instead, try to focus on novels that expand upon FR's history and past. Anthologies like Realms of the Elves are nice for that as well.

04-19-08, 10:48 PM I would go with Elaine or Paul Kemp myself. If you could get your hands on some of the old harper series especially Elaine's but I like the Shadowmage ones as well as some others.
