| Another Gnome09-22-05, 03:52 PM | That thread sure was getting weird replies, and unless I've gone blind, it's been actually deleted. Regardless, I think... nah, who am I kidding... Shame on us. Shame. [Yikes! I'm blind!] |
| kirkland09-22-05, 04:37 PM | no it hasn't the greatest is the name of the thread |
| Grishnor09-22-05, 04:49 PM | I'll tell you what let's prove them right I just read the responses to a question concrening the greatest swords in the realms so much bull crap if you didn't want to give real opinions keep your mouth shut don't make fun of the newbie by making up names and laughing because it's been posted before it is people like you that give d&d a bad name and cause people to stop playing the game are even speaking of it in public I have been at the roleplaying thing since 1981 and I for one thank him for his input and desire to learn about the realms they say that there is no stupid questions only stupid answers i saw the truth about that in this tread. Can you say run-on sentence? |
| Thysl09-22-05, 05:03 PM | Lordy-lord, they're just playing around.... The point that they are trying to make is that there is no 'greatest': it's subjective. What's not subjective is bad punctuation. :D |
| GothicDan09-22-05, 06:29 PM | The replies were made in such a way so as to answer the original poster by example and application rather than tedious prose. If someone is somehow unable to comprehend the message, and to enjoy a certain level of satirical humor made by some people very much in the know (Krash and even ERIC BOYD, one of the oldest Realms designers AROUND, jebuschristuspeople), then it's their own fault, and those are not the kind of people I want to be playing the game. That is to say: I don't like stupidity or drama, and I know what I want. Before anyone seeks to deprecate my character, I will admit: I am erudite, cold, apathetic, elitist, arrogant, and hopelessly biased when it comes to changing the world to reflect how I want it. So there. |
| Dark Wizard09-22-05, 07:12 PM | I will admit: I am erudite, cold, apathetic, elitist, arrogant, and hopelessly biased when it comes to changing the world to reflect how I want it. So there. Well, at least you're honest about it. :D I personally rather liked the discussion in the mentioned thread. Sure people sort of bounced it around and made up stuff, but that was actually decent lore and flavor. An Elven bladesinger technique that takes a thousand years to master, sounds very elven. Arrogant swordsmen who are not what they make themselves to be, I'm all for it. There is a distinct gap between the number of powerful and famous spellcasters and warriors. (And I think that is part of the reason why the thread took that turn.) It would be great to see those characters hinted there to actually get put into a book someday. And knowing the talents involved in that thread, it is actually possible. They also did mention real NPCs to the best of their ability and memory, it's not an easy question to answer as opposed to who's the greatest spellcaster or what not. And it's not like they were mean about it and never told you they were just joking, leaving you in the dark til the very end. You have to realize that these types of threads pop up rather frequently and you can only answer them the same way so many times. The fact that so many took the energy to answer and put in the effort for humor and cool ideas means that they want to help you but aren't sure what you're asking. |
| Krash09-22-05, 07:48 PM | The responses (which I started) were not in any way meant to denigrate the questioner or his topic. The response was meant to show (perhaps too indirectly) that there is no answer to the question. Real life examples would be a question as to who is the best baseball player of all time, or who is currently the best Formula 1 driver, or who makes the best donuts, or the classic 'who was the fastest gun in the West' etc. etc. No-one can speak with absolute authority on any of those topics - same goes for the 'greatest swordsman in the Realms'. Also, my response was intended to show that there are a myriad of people, places, events in the Realms that haven't seen print or haven't been let loose from some designer's (or fan's) imaginations yet. Just because the books mention A, B, C & D as capable fighters doesn't mean that someone can't introduce E, F & G as more capable. Anything subjective is open to interpretation. And Kirkland, I'm sorry if you took my (our) postings the way you did. Hang around these Boards for a couple of years (check my "Member since ..: date and you'll see I'm your grandpa when it comes to this stuff) and you'll have more than enough chances to contribute to who is the best, biggest, toughest, smartest etc. threads - they pop up on average every couple of weeks or so. Enjoy your time here. -- George Krashos |
| Lolths_Avangalist09-22-05, 10:41 PM | Eveyone is entitled to their own opinon, and having not read the mentioned post i agree that no one can say who is the best swordsman because they all don't weild sword :D, but eveyone of the has their good bad and ugly qualitites, so we cannot as a brotherhood agree on something that is so personal |
| kirkland09-23-05, 09:30 AM | made a change in the thread it is the greatest swordsmen sorry |
| kirkland09-23-05, 09:41 AM | most of you missed the point I know the person who posted the greatest and he is 13 yrs old and new to the game 3 nights of play under his belt after reading the post to his question he went looking for the characters they named in the books and when he couldn't find them wanted to know why they would lie to him yes it is subjective and it is a matter of opinion but if you are going to answer a post do so with a little common sense not just blow your own horn and as for the people the have a problem with the way i write get a life i post you read this is not english class deal with it this was a place where people could come to get ideals but now one 13 yr old won't trust it anymore |
| WizO_Lyoness09-23-05, 10:59 AM | In the future if you, or any patron, sees an inflammatory post, please report it. I hear you, people should not be making fun of others just because they are new. If there is a thread or a post someone would like to direct me to now, please do. Meanwhile, I'm going to close this, it's not getting anywhere. |
