I don't see it anywhere else, so here's a question. [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-09-06, 12:39 AM I'm curious, why has Forgotten Realms not been introduced into the online gaming arena yet? The world is so rich and vibrant, and let's face it, anyone who's ANYONE has visited Forgotten Realms at SOME point in their gaming career. How cool would it be to visit Icewind Dale, Waterdeep, or the fabled Battlehammer clan, etc., etc.?

I've played everquest, earth and beyond, diablo, and now wow and they all offer an ok gaming experience, but I'm one of the old school DnD fans and would absolutely ADORE being able to scour the land, interacting with charcters of all kinds in the familiar setting of Forgotten Realms. And I'm not alone, I know. So what's the story? Is it ever going to happen, has anyone ever thought about it, is it even feasible???? (Yes, I know DnD Online is coming out, or came out, or whatever, but I for one was very disappointed that it wasn't set in good ol' FR. That's just my opinion though.)

My opinion? Gawd I hope they don't join the pay-2-play MMORPG bandwagon.

Neverwinter Night is the better medium, IMNSHO. You buy the software, you hook up your own online group, and play for free.

02-09-06, 03:32 AM There are quite a few NWN servers out there that are pretty much mini-MMORPGs. I played in a couple, and there are indeed several out there (or were, a couple of years ago when I did this) that did their best to stick to Realms canon. I played in one for quite a long time that did a very good job of reproducing a part of the Dalelands.

It might generate as much ill will as "discussions of cosmology" do on this board.

Even worse, I could live without seeing websites named myFRitemsauction offering Icingdeath & Twinkle for a mere $50.00, & be perfectly happy without seeing guys named DarthCid shouting "LFG to camp Fzoul Chembryl."

I take it that this topic is the child of bewilderment spawned from noticing that DDO will be set in Eberron and not in the Realms.

I really like the Eberron setting & enjoy roleplay as much as crunch. That's why I probably won't subscribe to DDO because MMOG's ultimately become crunchy mockeries of RPGs.

The streets of Shadowdale will be littered with bodies.

God forbid if the guild trains Elminster to a zone border & the train picks up Storm Silverhand or Jhaele Silvermane.

The trail of devastation could lead all the way to the Standing Stone.

Or my players somehow doing something really really dumb, it has the same results either way.

I remember the first time I learned that those little Eyes of Zomm drew aggro from mobs. Was trying to work on the ol' conjuration skill since Wizards just got familar, was in Velk's Lab and was looking at the wall so no one would kill the eye. Little eye appeared in Velk's lair and he came rigth on marching to the zone ent.

Didn't know he was coming till saw "Velk the Sorcerer begins casting a spell" message and though "that doesn't look good, think I'll go outside for some fresh air."

Gives me a chuckal every time I think about it.

Now MAYBE if the entire design team was skilled, dedicated, creative, AND were complete and utter FR junkies then it might be cool...Good luck in that search.

02-15-06, 01:37 PM I was an Alpha and Beta tester for DDO, and it was generally a pretty bad experience. Let's just say that you will be utterly disappointed as either a D&D fan or a MMOG fan. It doesn't offer nearly enough depth or excitement to please either group.
