I don't think.... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have reached a point where I don't think 4ed Realms is going to be bad. Is it going to be the Realms? No. That doesn't keep it from being good however. There are many good things that are not the Realms. I understand that anger that many have towards the NEW setting, seeing how it was constructed out of the bones of our beloved Forgotten Realms, however I am hoping that when the time comes, we can set aside our anger and anguish and judge the NEW setting on it's own merits. I am now anxious to see the NEW setting, and to explore it, allowing a whole new world to open up before me, again.

I am in no way shape or form saying that I am glad that have done what they have done. Nor am I saying that you should drop your Realms games to play in the new setting. I am not going to judge the new setting based on the method of getting there, nor the setting that came before it. I hope you all do as well. For while nothing may make the changes okay (logical, internally consistent, etc.), or assuage the pain that we all feel, these things do not affect the viability or quality of the new setting in and of itself. For make no mistake, the new setting is it's own creation, and whatever things, horrible or otherwise, that were done to it's predecessor to make way, they are merely awful, horrible, excruciatingly unbearable birthing pains, and not truly part of the setting itself.

Flame away. :D

Not to be rude, but I'd really advise against making threads that declare that "you don't think" in future... ;) :D :P

As to 4e Realms... I can't say I actually care anymore, one way or another.

Interesting thread there, LK...

I don't go outside the FR forums much, and it seems most of the people who hangout THERE and NOT here love the new Realms.

So people who are NOT fans like what they are doing... nothing like a bunch of spiteful jealous jerks being happy that the best setting ever written is going down the tubes.

I also understand Reneshat's position.

It's like being a member of the Donner Party - You may hate what you must do, but if you want to survive in a 4e world, then you must feed off the rotting, bloated carcass of the dead.

So, will the FR fans who make the switch be Ghouls, or Wendigos?

-The 4e Forgotten Realms are...amazing, for a lack of better words. I am currently having a discussion with individuals who are complaining (not sarcastically, I don't think), that the layout of the FRCS is an impediment to getting into the setting. :bored:

-Wedingo, because then I'd be able to rumble with the Hulk and Wolverine.

Ah, Okay, cool - I LOVE Wendigos! (Marvel's version, not the D&D/folklore one).

At least Ubber won't have to worry about being a Ghoul Lord now. :P

I never did undestand tha particular monser from RL... if Ghouls have Lords, then what the hell is a Ghast?

-Because they want to be obstinant? I countered that having the information in book form is an impediment as well, because that entails you have to actually get up and physically open the book to the page you want.

Some people will find any reason to complain, I guess. Where is this discussion? Although, I'm a little afraid that if I were to read it for myself, it would make my brain hurt.

Like it or not, it IS the Realms, time passed to the future. For some , yes...

I personally don't see the point in moving the timeline forward, but if others like it, more power to them.

Seriously though, with the Spellplague 'messing' up the world, why couldn't we just get a 15 year timeshift? Since all the changes happened magically and instantly, their was NO point. Magical traditions? We've got tons of those buried in long-dead kingdoms and musty old libraries. All the Elves needed to do is break out some of those pre-Torillian High Magical Rituals they are known for. An orcish Kingdom? Fifteen years is a full generation to an Orc, so no problem there either.

Like I keep saying, I WILL use the 4e rules, and perhaps some of the new stuff from the 4e setting, but moving the timeline forward for the sole purpose of invalidating all of our previous sourcebooks is just counter-productive.

I hope that lots of young gamers buy into the new setting, but for us Grognards, the Golden Age has come and went.

I think they did a huge timeline jump so old campaigns could continue. Plus it is a great way to sell books on Waterdeep and not have them be just a rehash of the 2E and 3E material.

Ah, I had (and still have to a degree) the same problem he describes. I know that the lands and places where our group has always played belong to the old empires. But in the beginning, whenever I wanted to look up a place in the rest of the world, I had to either flip through all the pages*, or go look it up in the index.

I'm not sure if I prefer this structure over a 'per-land order'. It might give the same problem. You're reading up on Mulhorand, the Imaskari, then you suddenly have to flip to Unther, back to Mulhorand, then to Thay perhaps. etc...

So I never minded. It definitely didn't stop me from getting into the setting.

-The same thing happens to me, but that's the entire point of an index. And, anybody who get's discouraged in playing in the setting because they have to flip to the back, to the index? Well...

And, of couse, if we wanted, the finger of blame can once again be pointed at WotC, who decided awhile back that Indexes were not neccessary...

in a game product...

with over a gagillion rules...

Seriously though, I never had a problem finding anything in the FRCS within a minute or two. I don't undestand why the same people who will spend 10 minutes arguiing arrow trajectories won't spend two minutes looking something up.

A cross-indexed reference (Wiki) on this site would have went a long way in curing many of 3e FR's so called 'ills', but I guess they thought erasing everything was much easier then cataloguing it. :bored:

-No, no. Applying one of the things I've learned here (not this specific thread, but the boards in general), this is our fault, for being too stupid, and not 'their' fault.

-Being a little (just a little) more serious here, this allows them to publish things like the Rules Compendium. ;)

Yeah. I know everyone is different and all, but being upset about having to use the index? No offense, but I find that complaint to be on the silly side. I get annoyed when sourcebooks don't have an index! To me, that complaint seems more like a case of not being that interested in the setting to begin with (which is perfectly legitimate--he did seem to be be more interested in Greyhawk, anyway).

He doesn't have to be that interested in the setting--no one does. But that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the setting. It's not the fault of the setting if someone wishes the layout of the FRCS was different. Besides, that guy was partially wrong--the geographical information in that book IS arranged alphabetically, just by region rather than by country. The FR isn't Greyhawk--many areas aren't dominated by a single country.

Eh, I don't see how it's not the Realms.

It's got every nation in it.

And the NPCs were created all post the Grey Box for the most part.

All the changes were foreshadowed 3E.

Seconded. For example, I understand how hard (or at least, how costly) putting an index in GHotR might have been, but it really would have been useful.
