I've read a lot of the FR books and I want to get into roleplaying. What should I buy? Is there a basic gaming set... or something?

Your absolute first step is the D&D Player's Handbook. Step 2 is the Dungeon Master's Guide, if you want to try your hand as DM (running the game for others) and the Monster Manual.

After that, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and Players Guide to Faerun, to take you from 'vanilla-flavored' D&D games to FR flavored :)

Yeah. To play D&D, the best is to start by buying the three core books, namely the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual. You add to that the Forgotten Realms Campaign Settings book, which describes the world of the Forgotten Realms. That's if you want to gather some friends and start a game.

But what I'd suggest would be to first find a group of people who already know how to play and join them. I think it'd be much easier that way, and it doesn't force you to buy so many books at the same time.

Ok that's good. Isn't there supposed to be a board with little miiature chars? If not, then how does one actually go about playing?

Together, the group imagines what's going on in their heads and tells the story by verbally narrating what their characters do and say. (Each player plays one character; the Dungeon Master plays the rest of the world.) The DM explains the results of the characters' actions; sometimes dice are rolled to decide if they succeed. Some people use miniatures as a visual aid to see where their characters are in tactical situations, but it's not a necessary part of the game.

Sweet. Thanks alot man (or woman i suppose). Yeah that sounds like something I could get real into (I've always had a bit of an over active imagination). If anyone has any advice or anything like that, it would be greatly appreciated!

Check this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/whatisdnd)out for a newbie intro.

To find a game, try the appropriate forum on these message boards, visit a local game store and see if they have a notice board, or see if there's a club at a local university.

As long as you're up front about yopur "newb"ness, most players should be more than willing to help teach you the ropes.

Just had another thought...if you're a computer games fan, playing one of the PC games based on the D&D rules can help give you a sense of the mechanics of the "pen and paper" game.

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 can help you understand character creation especially.

Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, while not the world's greatest game, really helps make sense of the turn-based combat in D&D.

In what book would one find the core classes and their progressions? Also, I would like to know what book(s) to get for the other classes like swashbuckler, knight, scout etc...

You need Players Handbook, here's the list of classes http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/lists/class

I'd still suggest that you try to find some other players first. I'm not terribly good at finding these, so you can either check out the personals like Brenigin said, or if you feel lucky you can just look for the guys who wear the weirdest t-shirts of your school. This last one has worked for me. ;)

Also, I would like to know what book(s) to get for the other classes like swashbuckler, knight, scout etc...I highly recommend you learn how to play first and don't get into this optional rules stuff for a long time, if ever. It's isn't needed; it's only useful for certain styles of play, and you don't know what yours is yet.

If you can't afford the D&D Player's Handbook or want to have an idea of the rules before you buy them, look online here:
