pikel89 09-29-04, 08:13 PM	I've been reading Forgotten Realms novels for awhile now and I'd like to play Dungeons and Dragons in the Forgotten Realms setting. I know this sounds like a stupid question, but exactly which books do I need and which ones would you recommend getting? I've looked around on the boards and I haven't found a clear answer. :confused: Any help would be great.

GothicDan 09-29-04, 08:42 PM	Getting started? You'll need the three core D&D books - Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master Guide. Forgotten Realms specific books - at the least, get the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and the Player's Guide to Faerun. After that, I would vote for Races of Faerun and Faiths and Pantheons. And check WoTC's free 2nd Edition Downloads for Forgotten Realms. That stuff is utterly invaluable once you want to know more about the Realms.
warlockco 09-29-04, 11:28 PM	Yep, You need the 3 Core Books. The Dungeon Master's Guide, The Player's Handbook, and Monster Manual. Add the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting to that mix, for world information and some world rules. The Player's Guide to Faerun adds information about the Planes, and revises rules information from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting to the current version of D&D rules. A book on various different races of the Realms and rules for them and history is Races of Faerun. A book on magic in the Realms is Magic of Faerun. A book on the Silver Marches area is Silver Marches. A book on evil groups is Lords of Darkness. Serpent Kingdoms is a book that deals with Yuan-ti, Naga, and other reptilian type beings. Alot of history here also. Underdark is a book that deals with the Underdark. A very good book if you want to do subterreanian adventures. Faiths and Pantheons deals with the gods of the Realms. Plus, several other books. The 4 books in Boldface are going to be your core books for a Forgotten Realms game. All the other books are either rules update (Player's Guide to Faerun) or additional information on the world.

pikel89 09-30-04, 07:53 PM	I was looking around for the books mentioned above and I saw this thing called the Forgotten Realms Dungeon Master's Screen. Do any of you guys use it? Isn't it like a piece of cardboard to hide everything? Is it worth getting? ps sorry im asking a bunch of questions

Isn't it like a piece of cardboard to hide everything? Is it worth getting? ps sorry im asking a bunch of questions DM's Screen is usually a cardboard foldout that is 4 panels. It is used for the DM to hide behind, so the player's can't see his notes and maps, and his dice rolls most of the time. Some DMs roll dice out in the open. DM Screens come in several different flavors. But they all have the same thing in common, they provide alot of handy information in one spot, instead of flipping back and forth between pages in a book. The Forgotten Realms DM's Screen is made for 3E version of the rules. You might want to get a 3.5E DM's Screen. One of the better DM's Screens I have found as far as information presented is the Kingdoms of Kalamar DM's Screen, but it is useless as a screen though, too unwieldy. But it does have the Treasure Chart and XP Chart, which is nice to have at hand, but that is a 3E screen.
