I need a suggestion! [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm a Brazilian DM since 2002. I've played games with my friends in different worlds I created by myself but Faerūn was, obviously, the best world I ever used in my campaigns.
I can recall four different campaigns, three of then weren't settle in Faerūn, however, the last one was a long story of two real-years, played by my two friends, my sister (in the beginning, for seven months--she never liked RPG at all) and me. We never had very difficult problems but we decided to quit the adventure in last winter (summer in the US and all North Hemisphere), 'cos we were no longer able to keep playing, 'cos of university and school.
This summer (winter for you guys from North) we'll play again in Faerūn. This time with more two players, besides the old friends (no more sisters...).
I'm planning an adventure in North of Faerūn, probably close to the Anauroch. My friends will play with 2nd level characters of diverse classes:
- LG male Chondathan human Paladin of ??? (unknown, not decided yet);
- N male Moon elf Ranger;
- CG male Sun elf Sorcerer;
- CB male Lightfoot halfling Cleric of Tymora.
Well, and this is my problem, I don't know how should I start the game!! I don't have a long experience in starting games, because I always played long stable campaings.
All I need is a suggestion to kick off this campaign. What you people suggest me, knowing the basic stats of my players and that I'd like to play in the North?
I thought about that city, Dead Snow (or something like Dead Snow--I don't know how English versions of Silver Matches book calls it), to host initial missions, but still, I can't find a way to make my players get inside of all the events that happened there last year (1372) and if I get any other good suggestion I would promptly abandon this idea and support other, the good one LOL
Thank you guys in advance!

-Pg. 142 of the DMG provides a few suggestions (you should really read that chapter, and the next one):

Happenstance
-All of the characters just happen to be going to the same place, or working for the same guy, and simply band together.

History
-The characters already know each other, and are already friendly towards one another.

Mutual Aquaintances
-The characters don't know each other at first, but are brought together by a mutual friend/mentor, someone who they all know and trust.

Outside Intervention
-The characters are brought together by a powerful outside force, and are forced to work together.

The Cliche
-Everyone just happens to walk into the same bar, and decides to work together.

-Personally, I think that Choice 1 and Choice 4 are the best.

I love Choice 5 :D

Just a joke (well, it's funny because when I was younger, that's was the way all DMs started a campaign).

You don't have to use just one of the options. You can make the character "A" a childhood friend of the character "B". The character "C" was forced by circunstance to work with "A" and "B" (and probably, in the future, will become friends). Finally, the character "D" could be saved by the rest of the group and decides go around with them.

My group just started a Planescape campaign just a few weeks ago. My PC is a guide who was hired by a sorcerer (another PC) to take him to Gehenna to find a guy who is in possession of a powerful magical stone. In the middle of the journey we met a third PC who was looking for the same guy and we decided to go together. The 4th PC is just a prime human clueless who happened to be lost in the planes and encoutered us in Gehenna (I told him that his race is known as "Berk" in the planes; so when he introduce himself, he should say: "Hello! I'm a berk!"). He was trying to get back home, but all of us got trapped in the Carceri.

This is just an example of how you can "force" the PCs into a group.

-That is pretty funny.

Ooh well, thank you! :D
I'll probably work with all those five options, and combine then.
The elfs will know each other before the campaign starts. Then the other will naturally come to the party!
Thank you guys, and wow sounds such a nice planar adventure Hawkfeather. It's a pity that my players never got abover 12 level LOL Maybe this is time...
Thanks again!
