Tommorow is the first session of a new FR campaign i am going to be playing in, and the charecter i was going to play i can't anymore from a ban the DM made. I originally intended to play a drow fighter but he banned drow. I have no clue as what to play and need ideas. I generally stay away from anything divine, and i don't have a lot of source books. I have the PH, DMG, MM, complete arcane, complete divine, oriental adventures, player's handbook to faerun, races of the wild, races of destiny, and lastly weapons of legacy. I also dislike playing anything brutish I.E. orcs, and anything abnormally short I.E. halfling's and gnome;s (but dwarves are okay) It is a first level campaign so nothing to outlandish. The setting is deep rp and fantasy, so no prank funny charecters. Lastly the other two member's of the party, in thier infinite wisdom choose to both play rogue's :weep:
The campaign is taking place in Waterdeep to start to.
Thanks to anyone that helps. I will be checking back in soon and in the morning so please i need the help bad.

Your party needs magic AND a tank. You can live without priestly magic, by stocking up on healing potions, but I don't know how you are going to get by without a powerhouse class.

mages are the more complicated choice (either Wizard or Sorcerors), and are quite boring at low levs. If your DM is into fast advancement then go for it, because they are the class of choice at higher levs.

You may want to start out as a fighter, and then take some swashbuckler when you can to compliment your Roguish companions. Or go ranger (perhaps urban?) for the same reasons. Your party is gonna need someone who can fight well and take damage, so even taking a level of Barbarian to start is good just for the extra hit points. Then you can go either fighter or ranger from there.

The Warlock would be an interesting choice, because you would fill two slots, sort of. You can fight and use magic to a limited degree, but the hit die are pretty low. At least he would have a similar flavor as a Drow.

I'll second the barbarian idea. And might I recommend the Whirling Frenzy variant from Unearthed Arcana? It's also available online in the previews section. Strikes me as the epitome of tank (especially at low levels). You essentially trade in the bonus to CON and will saves for an extra attack (at a penalty negated by the strength bonus) and a dodge bonus to AC and reflex saves. Let me get this straight - HP comparable to a dragon of equal HD AND an AC boost as opposed to an AC penalty?! Sign me up!

Or there's the duskblade. Take care of some fighting and melee at the same time. Or go cleric. You'll heal. And you've some combat/tanking potential. Less than a class meant to do only that, but you can still do it. Your DM will just need to plan accordingly.

Though a part of me would love to hear how a party with two rogues and a spellthief turned out . . . :D

Your party need a tank more than magic at this point. Your rogues can Use Magic Device in a pinch. I would suggest straight fighter. Maybe you could go moon elf and multi class later as a wizard.

A party consisting of all rogues? Where's the co-op play? Where's the balance? You are telling me that everyone should just do as he pleases, and screw the greater good?

Someone has a quote in his sig form Ed, and it says something to the effect that when people stop attempting to balance their party with abilities, and only care about whats good for them, then the game is no longer D&D.

I remember way back in the day where it was just assumed someone would have to take one of the core classes. players would get together and the DM would say "who's going to play the Fighter? Okay... Now who's going to be the thief (rogue)?" etc, etc. Everyone has the 'Leroy Jenkins' attitude; they all want to be the one to stop the bad guys and to hell with the rest of the party. Too much Power gaming and not enough co-operation for my taste.

I'm not saying a group of just rogues wouldn't work, and in many cases could be quite fun. The DM just has to fit the adventures around that kind of party. Using stock pre-fab adventures is out of the question unless the characters are somewhat higher in lev then the module normally requires.

I've heard of successful campaigns based around single classes, although I've never played in one. It just means more work for the DM.

-That's in Dan's signature.

-Perhaps have three rogues, but each of them can have different personalities. One rogue can be the "Robin Hood" type Rogue. One Rogue can be the "Screw everyone except me" type of Rogue. The third one can be a "Han Solo" type of Rogue.

aren't those all the same "rogue"

-Well, the "Robin Hood" is a little too similar to the "Han Solo". And, at certain points, Han Solo was the "Screw everyone except me". But, I am sure you get the point I was making...I hope.

Robin hood, Steals from only the rich, to better the poor, keeping little to none for himself.

Han Solo Cheats and steals for himself, but is good at heart, so despite "better judgement" will do the right thing when it comes down too it.

"Screw everyone but me", Is right in it's title. They are selfish, and should a child starve so they get 5 gp, so be it...it's not their kid.

Alignments would have to be IMO, LG w/CG tendancies, CN w/CG tendancies, and CN. ( Personally though I always saw Robin Hood as a ranger ;))

Some sort of Light type of fighter that can be just as stealthy yet take care of the tanking end is likely where youll want to go. A fighter in full plate clanking around will just annoy your two rogue pals.

I would suggest the Fighter/swashy option already mentioned or the Fighter/Duelist. A monk with some good feat choices making him a better tank would be good (plus he could be a Monk of the Long death or from one of the other more evil orders). One of my more memorable tanks was a Fighter with levels of Lasher (sword and fist). The things she could pull off with a whip hehe.

It is possible to survive without a cleric in the party but you had beeter make friends with an NPC one in case something really goes wrong and you need some emergency services.

You could always go with Mystic Ranger found in Dragon #336. You gain 0-5th lvl spells, spells starting at first level rather than fourth, but you lose your animal companion and proficiency with martial melee weapons and sheilds. You also must be non-evil, and gain a slower class ability progression (combat styles, evasion, etc.). Skills, hit die, saves, and Base Attack Bonus remain unchanged. With the additional number of spells per day you could cast, you could be a fine healer until much higher levels. You could be the party tank if you keep yourself equipped with two weapons. Take the spontaneous cure feat to swap any ranger spells for cure spells, and you have an exceptionally well-rounded character. You could do just the opposite of what your DM prohibitted, and play a moon elf drow hunter. I would recommend multi-classing to the other rougues in your party, just so you could maintain a more well-rounded party.

That or go with bard.

I vote Ranger as well; Rangers are fun.

Take a Hamster as your animal compainion for bonus points in awesomeness.

And make evil fear the hamster's stare.

Druid might work, but you definately need a tank of sorts. Wizards are boring at the beginning and without a 'meat shield' to defend you, chances are you're not going to live long.

Fighter/Barbarian/Ranger sounds like a good fit. If you were to do fighter, I'd branch out to Swashbuckler, like recommended earlier. Barbarians can be fun, but much like the Druid, they'd want nothing doing with a big city, especially Waterdeep.

An Urban Ranger would be a very good fit for this group it sounds. There would be three sneaky types, two trap detectors/removers and a front line fighter (possibly).

My vote goes to...
a gnome cleric of Baravar Cloackshadow with the protection and trickery domains.

or a halfling cleric of Brandobaris (luck and trickery domains)

Either of these guys would have an exuse to hang out with two rogues.
Cleric isn't the best tank out there, at low levels, but the healing spells might keep you alive until next level.

He said he did not wish to play anything abnormally short, since he tends towards Dwarves.

I suggest A Dwarf Ranger since you need someone who can fight, and dwarves tend to have hitpoints. :)

I would have gone with the 3 rogue idea. If anything, MORE co-operation would be needed to successfully complete your adventures with your skin intact. A balanced party is all well and good, but it can get boring. Some sessions end up with the fighter doing all the killing, the cleric the healing, the rogue deals with locks 'n traps and the mage sets everything on fire. In short, there are no real challenges for THE PLAYER. You have a complete group who can pretty much tackle ANY issue by simply relying on the characters skills alone.
Using 3 rogues would eliminate any straight forward fight, and would force them to use their wits, whether they set snares/traps, use decoys then sneak attack together, or something else. You could look at it another way - How many priests chillout with cage fighters? How many shoplifters spend their time 'browsing' goods with consevationists? Have you ever seen Paul Daniels sipping tea with The Pope? No. Thieves stick to their own, much as thugs do, as do the guys at the boxing club/gym. Catch my drift? In otherwords, at some time or another you'll get bored of the same setup. I've had loads of fun playing in a crew of purely made up of Warriors as I have in games with mixed classes. Bottom line..... HAVE FUN!!
