It's everything I could look for in a setting, and possibly more. $40 well spent.

Welcome to the Realms. As a suggestion, snatch up any 2e FR books that you can find. The rules have changed, but the story and details are much better than the 3e stuff.

Hail and well met Eliza and welcome to the Realms. It's good to see that the lands of Faerun can still entice newcomers with it's magics and wonders.

To re-confirm what Ryltar said earlier, if you want more about the world, the 2nd Ed books contain much more fluff than the more recent ones (Not that the recent books are without their own charms and fluff)

Again, welcome to the Realms and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Yeah, the 3.x stuff is great but there is a ton of good stuff in the old material.

I'm slowly falling back in love with it. It's been 4 years since I last gamed in the Realms, but now I'm introducing a bunch of new players to it, it's all coming back to me how much I like the place.

Yes, welcome to the realms. It is by far the best setting of all to chose from in AD&D.

If I might, I would like to tell a small story of when I was 19years old, in a hobby store in Omaha Nebraska eyeing the first boxed set of FR when it came out in 1987.

I bought it, read it, and fell in love with it as well. Other than the first books about the Moonshae's that were published on the setting, I loved all the stuff.

What sealed my love a few years later was the Book by one of our fav. writers, called The Crystal Shard. It captured all the fantasy of the northlands for me. (I was really into Waterdeep and the north back then), so it was really good.

I would recommend a few books for you depending on where you plan on playing in the realms.

RA Salvatore has some of the great ones. Particularly his Drow trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn), and the Crystal Shard and Streams of Silver (which were fantastic), and skipping the halflings gem (as it was thrown together I think, his worst book next to SPine of the world), and moving on with the Legacy series.

that is all I have to say.

Have fun getting into the Realms.

Forgotten Realms is by far my favorite campaign setting. I haven't been able to play in a FR campaign yet, but I'm already hooked thanks to the Forgotten Kingdoms MUD (http://www.forgottenkingdoms.com/) and the Avatar Series. Gotta love the Realms. :)

...reminds me of when I picked up my first Realms product, the 2e gray box. It's good to hear that the Realms still has that effect.

Yeah, FR is typically what I end up using when I DM. It's mainly because there are so many areas that are complete, while retaining many areas that are not.

You see, long ago I spent countless hour upon hour making my own worlds. That would fade, or be incomplete, then I'd spend more countless hours making a new world. Then I entered real life, where so much time is taken up with the important stuff, like a job, a house, social stuff that isn't D&D, etc. Those countless hours were donated to the next batch of overeager gamers who could spend them on designing a complete world, most of which the PCs would never see. That's when I made the switch over to FR. Ed Greenwood did all that work for me (thankyouverymuch), so now I could just concentrate on the next adventure I needed to run.

I notice that ebberon is trying to do the same thing, but they've got a long way to go before that world gains the completeness that FR has enjoyed for so long.

The main problem I find with FR is the one of misconceptions. Other gamers find out I use FR, and they've picked up that retarded thought that I'm sure we've all heard from time to time. "FR is super powerful/high magic. The pastry vendor has magic pastries, a magic cart, and magic boots so his feet don't get sore." I can't even imagine the number of times I've had to tell people "No. It's run just like any other game I would run. The novels can have as little or as much effect on the game experience as the DM allows."

Anyway, welcome.

Cheers

Otto :)

Welcome, Eliza--I like your sig, btw. I agree, the FR Campaign Setting is great, and one of the nice things about the FR is that you can play a great game just with that if you want to, or you can go pretty much as deep into the lore of the Realms as you want. You could probably fill a bookcase just with the sourcebooks that have been published (counting 1e and 2e), and then fill another with the novels. ;)

There's also this site and the Candlekeep site, which both have lots of stuff for FR. Anyway, hope you continue to enjoy the Realms and have fun gaming in them!

Forgotten Realms is the best campaign setting ever created!

I mean I kinda grew up with the PC games that took place in good ol' Faerun.

I have to say that the 3e FR campaign setting book is one of the best roleplaying books I've ever had in my hands. It has immense value as a resource and even though I received it as a gift, I consider money very well spent. It has more than paid for itself since I received it.

That being said, the 2e FR materials are wonderfully rich as well and should not be forgotten (especially so many are available via PDF). They not only have mroe rules than you can shake a stick at, but they also have all of the flavor you could ask for.

The misconceptions that others have about the FR are annoying but are overcome easily enough. For me, it's never been about the star personalities or the epic level magic - it's been about another world I can envision without having to close my eyes.

And about Boo. Definitely about Boo.
