Ideas for candlekeep [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-17-07, 09:20 PM So, my PCs are about to be doing a session where they go to a scholarly institute to do some hard to find research and get some questions answered (namely Candlekeep in FR)

I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas for encounters during the session. Things to keep up the excitement and to draw out the process and emphasize what they are doing as a very important matter, because it is.

I don't want them to just travel 300 miles for a quick stop by a locale, perhaps the only one, to find the information they need. plus they spent a while searching for a valuable enough book (1000 gp) to be allowed admittance.

The party consists of a 4 lvl 9 chars, a Mage, a rogue/ass, a fighter, and a cleric.

05-17-07, 10:37 PM just inland from candlekeep is the wood of sharp teeth, it contains an elven civ that was abandoned 800 years ago, as far as an encounter in the keep itself, im sure there are some portals there, the PC's could be doing late night research and something comes through the portal, the head libryian(sp) could set them a task in return for doing their research for them in less time and for more info

05-17-07, 10:58 PM Perhaps the book they need is lost down in the bowels of Candlekeep, guarded by Miirym the mad ghost dragon. They'd have to sneak past her, outwit her, or try to fight her off. The WotC site's Wyrms Of The North has a good write-up of her.

Or they might have to deal with thieves sneaking in to steal the book. They could fight them off, or be accused of the crime in their place.

Or one of the books hides something powerful: it releases a monster, or a dangerous spell. A curious PC releases it, then they have to deal with it.

05-18-07, 11:23 AM Maybe the book is magical and in order for the PC's to find out what they require they are drawn into the book and must overcome some creature, puzzle, or some thing in order to be released by it. They could find a small dungeon inhabited by previous readers of the book that have never managed to escape.

As mentioned before the idea of the book being stolen maybe just after the PC's have examined it is always a good one.

Perhaps along with them is another band of adventurers researching something evil in nature. =)

Or they are unpleasantly surprised by a lacky to one of their nemises is conducting some research...
