I was just wondering...

For $30, should I buy Faiths and Pantheons, Races of Faerun, Unapproachable East, City of the Spider Queen or something else?

I guarentee that Races of Faerun and Faiths and Pantheons will satisfy you. While Races of Faerun has some information contradicting core FR material it contains excellent information on the life, society, and outlook of your average Pc. Faiths and Pantheons provides information about even the most reclusive deities. From the slumbering Ulutiu, to the unholy :b: Ghaunadaur :b::bow: it provides an in-depth view into the plans and dogma of the FR Deities.

:b: That which lurks deserves a bigger section. :b:

RoF will benefit players more than the rest. F&P is mainly a DM tool, Unapproachable East is area-limited, and CotSQ is an adventure and should left for the DMs.

So buy based on wether you are a player or a DM.

If your a Player, Races of Faerun is probably best. Otherwise, any of the books are good. FR always produces good stuff.

I'd go with Races of Faerun. If you DM or are a player, you should find it useful. Faiths and Pantheons is to much of a disappointment in many ways to it's 2E counterparts. Unapproachable East appeared to me better organized than Silver Marches. However, it's only worth the buy, in my opinion, if you are planning to game in that area.

City of the Spider Queen I am unable to comment on. There is a code of conduct after all. ;)

Races of Faerun. :)

If nothing else, you should enjoy the detailed background they gave the various Human ethnic groups. That section alone really made the Realms come alive for me. I'm a sucker for cultural descriptions, histories, and stuff like that.

Also--since I get the feeling you like Elves... that are Vampires...--you might also enjoy the write-up on the Avariel, the "updated" (and correct) Bladesinger, and the High Mage PrC.

All in all, I found it to be probably the 2nd best 3E FR book (after the FRCS), probably tied only by Magic of Faerun for usefulness and material.

Out of the items you've listed Faiths and Pantheons and Races of Faerūn are the two must haves. I've found both to be highly useful... but in my case Faiths and Pantheons has been MORE useful than Races of Faerūn.

The histories/dogmas/et cetera in Faiths and Pantheons can lead to some great adventure ideas.

You said... "...or something else?"

Do you own Lords of Darkness? If not, I highly recommend that book (assuming you are a DM)!

It all depends on how much FR stuff you have. Personally, I found the 2E Faiths and Avatars is better then the 3E Faiths and Pantheons. In fact, I would recommend spending your money on a .pdf version or ebay an original version of that book. It's well worth the money.

If you DON'T have a lot of 2E stuff, then maybe you would need the Faiths and Pantheons. If you just need something to describe the gods and help out, then that is alright (even though a less desirable product).

Races of Faerun is a really good book. It helps detail all the different cultures in the FR. I find it works for players AND DMs.

I have to agree with Lashan here. If you have the 2e books on the gods, there are so much better. But Races has some nice info also.....

Yeah, I was a huge 2ED fanboy.

I have Demi-human Deities, and Faiths and Avatars, not to mention tons of 2ED adventures I have ran like "Hellgate Keep", For duty & Deity, 4 from Cormyr, Wyrmskull Throne... etc, etc...

I have Lords of Darkness, MoF, Into the dragons lair, Attack on Myth Drannor, Silver Marches and that's it... well... along with the FrCs obviously!

I have all of those except "spider queen", and both "races" and "faiths" have proved invaluable! If I had to choose, I'd say "RoF" first, but next paycheck, get "F&P" as well. They are of great aid.

if ya go to barnes and nobles or wldens books, get a membership and go online and get their 10% off coupons then you can spend in the range of 24.99$ (10% coupons plus 10% membership savings plus sometimes they have 15% for membership savings so it averages at 20%-25% off on books)on all those 30$ books. Thats what Ive done with mine, helps alot.
