First off, I'm liking the look of the revamped boards, good job Wizards. Now to the heart of the matter....I need thoughts comments & reflections here.

I just received the latest Dungeon Magazine along with the latest Dragon Magazine, and I'm preparing to use the gith in an upcoming story arc that will carry my characters to near epic levels. Now here comes the hard part. I'm not sure I want to wipe out the important NPCs in the region. The group is currently taking some much needed R&R in Silverymoon. The group will have an average level of about 5 when this arc starts.

The groups going to encounter some gith scouting parties shortly, and at about 8th level a portal is going to open in the Evermoors unleashing an army of very mobile gith pushing the native wildlife out into the surrounding "civilized" lands.

The Pc's are going to be sent to investigate the exodus of monsters and discover the army. I plan on them being big factors in gathering up the lords alliance, some barbarian tribes, a large portion of Abolds Horde (he'll have been attacked by the gith & wants revenge), a couple scattered humanoid tribes (mostly trolls) and a small contingent of mind flayers. Being the over zealous lot that I know my PCs are, they're going to try to meet the invasion head on, whereupon i'll torch silverymoon.

Then it'll be a series of skirmishes whereupon the PCs will take a hatchery, probably a fortress of gith to use as a base of opperations and finally travel to the astral plane and whomp the lich queen to kingdom come.

Now I need advice on who to execute my master plan. Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, the group consits of
Human Paladin of Tyr lvl 4
Dwarf Fighter lvl 4
Human Evoker lvl 4
Human Cleric of Kelemvor level 4
Human Rogue lvl 4

You know it occured to me that all those mega high-ups might make some good batteries.

The Lich Queen as one of her many schemes could try and siphon off some of the Chosen's power.

How they were captured is irrelavent, its just come to light that the high-ups have been captured and they are being used by the Lich Queen like an energizer battery.

The Pc's could save them if you wanted to go that route or not.

Or how 'bout the Lich Queen caused a massive mmagical backlash that put the high-ups into a catatonic state?

Oh well, you get the idea.

Wicked idea, but its more then just Alustrial, you've got King Battlehammer and a couple other higher ups....I think I might do the coma thing...it'd allow for a protection type adventure as well facilitate their return after the queen is defeated

Really good story, Wish i could play in it!

Just a bit of info though, Perhaps people like Alustriel will be working to counter the Spells of the gith Lich Queen. Something like that.

Maybe due to indescion Alustriel cannot force the silver marches to act until proof is given to its council of the real threat.

I could see Sundabar, Felbarr, and Adbar ( The threee nations that worry the most about an orc invasion ) Battling the others on the council that a real threat was approaching the confederation of the Silver Marches. Perhaps these three are worried about the miltary readiness in dealing with Obould!!!!!!
Perhaps before suffering a defeat at the hands of Gith, Obould Horde could be fully amassed.

Nivek, its funny you should post this because about a week ago my DM told me that would we be starting a campaign at level 4 and he was going to use the Githyanki (sp?) story arc.

About the Silver Marches, you're right, there are more higherups besides Alustriel. It would be a good idea to include Taern Hornblade from Silverymoon as he is Alustriel's right hand. King Breunor Battlehammer of Mithral Hall would also most likely support Alustriel or, in her absence, Taern. Helm Dwarf-friend, the ruling master of Sundabar, could go either way on this one but he would most likely follow Alustriel or Battlehammer because he tends to think clearly and unbiased.

Harbromm of Felbarr and Citadel Adbar would probably oppose using the Confederation's forces against the Gith Invasion, because they refused to help the others when they were sending assistance to Nesme. Felbarr and Adbar tend to be more inclined to think of their own safety before others', so consider that before you make any critical decisions.

How do you think King Many Arrows and his horde would factor in? I plan on laying low Alustriel probably throwing her into some sort of coma, I'm going to have King Many Arrows survive a gith assasin attack, King Battlehammer will be laid low as well although I don't know how yet, and as for Helm Dwarf-friend and the dwarven rulers of Citadel of Felbarr and Citadel Adbar I have no idea what I'm going to do with them...any suggestions?

Hi.

To keep the high levellers in the area occupied, you need to put in other threats that they are curently facing. for example, depending on the time of the campaign (im assuming its in DR 1372, shieldmeet), you could have khelben missing (he's fighting phaerimm in evereska with an army of the lord's alliance-see the 'Return of the Archwizards' trilogy). Alustriel would similarly have joined him in his efforts, and they both would have gotten into big trouble , with the shades and phaerimm and whatnot.

Incidentally, that would make help from the lord's alliance harder to get, since their major force is involved with the phaerimm.

As for bruenor and the others, some ppl suggested threats from Obould many arrows, or perhaps even trouble with the menzoberrranyr drow. Perhaps the Githyanki are making alliances with the orcs, trolls, giants, and even drow to harass the major bastions of the north in exchange for magic, troop help, money. A force as mighty as the Lich Queen should be able to cow even the most chaotic beings, after all.

An example: Obould has been approached by a contingent of Githyanki, offering magic and troop support in the assault of citadel felbarr, their old home. In exchange for the aid, the Githyanki ask for an immediate attack. With Githyanki sorcerers, fighters, and red dragon allies, felbarr and adbar would have their hands full for months to come. The githyanki dont need to lend much-their main strenth would be their magic, psionics, and red dragon allies. :)

hope this helps

oops sorry thats laeral involved with khelben , not alustriel. bah these chosen-they are all the same :P :P :P

maybe she has been in the know of this threat, and is currently in the astral plane battling the githyanki. After all, the best defence is offence. As an experienced planewalker, she must have planar contacts that can provide elite adventuring squad to tackle the problem.
As she does that, maybe she got overwhelmed in an ambush and captured by the lich queen...as ppl posted, maybe she is being studied to find a way to syphon mystra's power into the lich queen.

as a side note, anyone know the Lich Queen's stats? what caster lvl would she be?

Around 30? 35? ideas pls?

There's no reason why the invasion needs to involve the assassination of prominent political figures in the Silver Marches. Just change the intent of the invasion.

Known: The High Forest existing on top of a giant, psionic fungus that exists in the underdark.
Known: The giant fungus hides tombs and ruins that are unknown to mankind, elvenkind, dwarvenkind, etc.
Known: The Githyanki are Psionic.

Possability: The High Forest fungus is the mutated remains of Gith.

Action: The Lich Queen will send several task forces to infiltrate the high forest and its underdark surroundings, possibly via the endless caverns. Once Gith's presence is verified, she will attempt to destroy the fungus.

How do you destroy the fungus? By burning the High Forest.

PLENTY of things for PCs to do there.

Dungeon Magazine #100 has all the Lich Queen's stats layed out; she's about 25th level, if memory serves... low-twenties, somewhere there...

Hmmm...I would not put Alustriel or Taern Hornblade out of the picture so soon in the adventure. Alustriel might be trying to cause the Orc Tribes in the North to clash with the impending Gith Invasion Force because she forsaw this happening. Alustriel is not an idiot. She is a mega powerful wizard who happens to be a chosen of a deity. Also, I would bring the following people into this adventure:

Drizzt Do’Urden (CG male drow Ftr10/Bbn2/Rgr5 of Mielikki)

Wulfgar (NG male human Bbn12)

Cattie-brie (CG female human Ftr9/Rgr3)

Regis (CG male lightfoot halfling Rog13)

Bruenor Battlehammer (LG male shield dwarf Ftr15)

I would advise that you let the PC's infiltrate the Gith at some of their astral fortresses before the Gith Invade and then have them discover the real reason why the Gith are invading Silverymoon, THE HIGH FOREST! Indeed, the Gith are trying to destroy the colossal fungus that spans for miles underneath the High Forest. However, what the PC's do not know is that the Lich Queen of the Gith wants her elite forces to make an alliance with the Drow Priestess: Arda Pharn (CE Female drow Clr9/Arachne10 of Lolth) so she can steal the psionic power of the fungus's central brain!

In return for helping the Lich Queen fight the Fungus and cut out the central brain, the Drow get to keep 50% of the magical treasure and lore in the ruins and tombs that the fungus has covered over in the Underdark. The PC's should make an alliance with Methrammar Aerasumé (LG Male half-elf Ftr7/Wiz9) and convince him to help defend Silverymoon while a strike team (your PC's) go and discover what the Gith are up to. Taern Hornblade (LG male human Evo18) could be orginizing a massive slaughter fest that will occur when the Orcs and the Gith armies smash together...leaving both the Orcs and the Gith devastated!

That sounds bloody awesome!
The dwarf is going to be called back to Mithral Hall on Wednesday whereupon they'll battle a mind flayer and some of his thralls, I'm going to set up an encounter where the surprize a group of gith and if they eventually translate the documents found on the gith it'll reaveal detailed plans of Silverymoon, Mithral Hall & the surrounding area. I figure that even though the goal for the gith is the burning of the High Forest, they'll still want a base of power through which to lay waste to any approaching armies.

Keep the ideas coming.

the araumycos being gith idea is a good one, i didnt think of that. Will you use that as the basis for your capmapign Nivek, or will you do the more classical world domination theme?

I just finished book 3 of the Return of the Archwizards trilogy...the way i see it Storm, Khelben, Laeral, Alustiel, and Dove are all very busy dealing with the shades. You just need to lengthen time periods a bit, so that they are unavailable when the big invasion begins. Even then, if they turn their attention to the githyanki, the shades might see it as a great opportunity to strike back at them. The shades wouldnt be too worried about the githyanki threat, as their city cannot be reached through flying except by flight, and even then the city has to be approached directly from below it, and even then only at certain intervals. Also, the city can breach the planar boundaries and escape if need be. So they would be striking back at the chosen of mystra.
The other main npcs are around lvl 13-18, and im sure with a bit of work your players will outshine them quickly.

A thing to bear in mind is that the vast majority of githyanki do not grow old and die, because the astral plane is timeless. they are born and raised and trained in many hidden bases on many different worlds, then the majority go back to the astral plane to continue their training. Because there are no old githyanki really, the githyanki population must be truly staggering. Considering they live on an infinite plane, their number ought to realistically be in the hundreds of millions.
Thus, you can keep all the high lvl faerunian npcs occupied with vast numbers of githyanki, appearing all over the place (githyanki being very mobile) and keeping these high ups busy throughout the campaign.
The spotlight will remain on the pc's throught the whole game, as they do more and more impressive things to aid the war effort until they outshine any other good npc, culminating with the final battle with Vlaakith.

as a side note, anyone got dungeon 100? i think it has the stats of vlaakith the lich queen. is it possible to have them?

hope this helps.

ysrgrathe send me an e-mail and I'll hook you up with the lich queens stats. I do plan on using the fungus forest under the high forest as the tomb of gith, and I'm just about to introduce The Ashen Compact (except they fight gith as opposed to drow) tommorow night. should be interesting.

oh, and ysrgrathe make sure you CAP your title for the e-mail...something like LICH QUEEN, otherwise I'm liable to never see it.

Hey thx man. Only one problem..erm what's your email? *grin* It seems i can't email you from your profile, and i can't see your email addy at all.

Thanx for the help. I'll buy no 100 dungeon at some point, I just have this overwhelming curiosity about the Staff of ephelomon. Wasn't he one of tiamat's consorts?

thx for the help :)

I'm hoping to incorporate the Return to the Tomb of Horrors in my FR campaign set in the Dales region, and have the githyanki encounter my group through that module. Perhaps Vaalkith is researching the process to attain demi-lichdom, and runs afoul of the PCs as they explore the tomb. After that (if the group survives), they'll have to take on Vaalkith as she abandons demi-lichdom and attempts to reach godhood.
ysrgrathe

06-26-03, 06:57 AM
I was wondering something....with the devotional power of the entirety of the githyanki race (must be millions out there), would Vlaakith jump directly to greater godhood? After all, she would become the sole patron deity of an entire race.

I also realised that, although the astral plane is timeless, the large numbers of very old githyanki that have benefited from this would not be able to leave the plane for an invasion, since time would instantly catch up with them and turn them to dust.
So much for that tactic :( No more millions of living warriors that ought to be dead anymore.
They would still be very efficient in the astral plane however, as a sort of militia, while the younger ones would go into battle.

Vlaakith the demi-lich *shudder* Now that's something to be very scared of.

What's the ashen compact nivek? and how did the game session turn out?

Okay here's the low down on what happened.

The dwarf received a message from her mother saying that her father and eldest brother were missing in the mines below Mithral Hall. She being a family oriented dwarf rushed off to go find them, the rest of the party, not wanting to be caught without their engine of dwarven destruction went with her. While tromping around the Underdark they entered a sort of training facility where they were attacked (in ambush situations) by various groupings of Humans, Halflings, Dwarves (this includes Deurgar, Dwarves, & Shield), Elves (Moon, Sun, & Small bit of Drow) and a few Mindflayers.

It turns out that they stumbed upon the training grounds for The Ashen Compact (originally created in Dragon 298 to fight drow, but atapted to fit githyanki) The group was asked to join and then told that The Ashen Compact has protected the body of gith for ages (In fungus forest under the High Forest), and has had to recently withdraw to safer territory. The Compact asked the PC's to venture into the dangerious area and retrieve the body of gith, so that the Lich Queen cannot make her rule over the githyanki absolute. Blah blah blah, the PC's said yes, then headed back to Silverymoon. They happened across a githyanki scouting troup and nixxed them all with a well placed fireball. In the still burning remains they found a notebook (which they can't read) with maps of the area and notes and such....then they got back to sIlverymoon and that's it for this weeks game

And so the Incursion begins! My players are going to be investigating a influx of lizard men in more civilized areas, it'll turn out that trolls are pushing them farther out, and that the gith are pushing the trolls farther out...
