As one of the campaigns I have set up but never finished (happens more than i like to admit), I had the real target be the city of Oryndel [spelling?]. I had it set up to hit a locale away from there (I believe it was the Silver Marches, Impiltur, or Aglarond). The idea is to get on the plane away from Oryndel, then take over a couple earth nodes (or evil nodes) and teleport large number of forces between them from their "beachhead" to the underdark near Oryndel. This involved creating a large number of undead to send against the mindflayers.

Either of the three locations are good:
1. Silver Marches: large supply of natural resources.
2. Aglarond: large supply of natural resources plus access to the GoldenWay
3. Impiltur: some resources but the native people could have a repressed, latent psionic talent that the githyanki bring out of them to use as conscripts/allies against the mindflayers.

Hope this helps.

I ran the entire campaign in the northwestern Dales, drawing heavily from the Return to the Tomb of Horrors box set. Vlaakith was searching for the secrets of demi-lichdom, and she found them in the ruins of Myth Drannor: Acererak's Tomb of Horrors. In order to get a foothold on the nearby region (and partially as a diversion), Vlaakith attacked and captured Daggerdale, and as she moved south she was stopped at the Tower of Ashaba by the PCs and a massed force of thousands, including Storm and other personalities of the region, NPC allies, but no Elminster... he was in Hell. ;)

While this was going on, Vlaakith had sent Zam Xras to strike a deal with the necromancers of the Black Academy, seeking Acererak and the secrets behind demi-lichdom. The PCs had to beat the githyanki to Acererak and destroy the demi-lich before Vlaakith's minions could claim his phylactery (or die trying).

The PCs defended Shadowdale, retook Dagger Falls and Castle Daggerdale, slew many great red dragons of the region, saved Randal Morn and hundreds of slaves and refuges from the mines of Tethyamir, explored the City of Moil, destroyed Acererak, slew githyanki assassins, assaulted Tunarath, and ultimately destroyed Vlaakith.

It took a year and a half to get things rolling with the invasion and the first sightings, through the first stroke, on into several large-scale battles, into Myth Drannor and through the Return to the Tomb of Horrors box. The downloadable Tunarath content (should be somewhere at Paizo.com) allowed for the assault on the githyanki capital, and "The Lich-Queen's Beloved" brought an end to Vlaakith and that campaign arc.

We had a lot of fun with it. :)

I am actually running a three story game about Mind Flayers in various time periods of the races existence. In one of the stories on the tail of the Mind Flayers will be the Gith's and a invasion force seeking to destroy the Flayers in Forgotten Realms as they dimensions/time warp around to escape the end of their civilization.

I'm setting it out in Cormyr with alot of off scene stuff happening in other regions. This will also be happening in a time long in the past of Forgotten Realms.

I think a Githyanki force attacking Forgotten Realms would get spanked by combined forces from the various kingdoms unless they made efforts to keep them seperated. Perhaps assisting the other foes to the Realms- Orcs, Shades, and whatnot. A two prong alliance to keep their own army not stretched to the limit.
