Firstly Wotc guru's
a: I hope this is the correct area for this subject.
b: I hope none of the official designers mind.
c: Any help would be greatly recieved.

I have decided after much thought to go ahead and start an un-official book on dwarves in The Forgotten Realms.

I intend fully to ask permission to re-use facts already published by WotC and the games designers, so as to not stand on any toes. When this monumental project is finished I will be submitting it to WotC to do with as they will, It will also be on download on t'internet.

The book shall cover the following areas:

Dwarven Races & sub-races,
Dwarven realms history,
Abilities:
Regions:
Social structure:
Clans:
Kingdoms old and new or reclaimed:
Magic:
Artifacts:
Culture:

and a lot more besides.

I am asking anyone who may read this to submit to me your ideas on new PrC Class's, Historical Events, Any Dwarven infomation in relation to The Realms you may find or come across.
Info that you have found will be given due credit, this is a collective effort not a singular endevor!!

I hope many of you can help out.

Thanks in advance,

Bjorn Delzounblood.

Sources for Tethyamar:-

- FR11 - Dwarves Deep, p. 58-60 and 64
- FR13 - Anauroch, p. 5 -- I thought about suggesting that the dwarves of Tethyamar could perhaps be related to the part dwarven d'tarig.

- The Dalelands, p. 48 and 57
- Ruins of Zhentil Keep, p. 7, 27-30
- Cormanthyr, p. 32-40
- Demihuman Deities, p. 61
- Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark, p. 74,
- DRAGON Magazine #277, p. 90

I'm surprised you're surprised, Delzoun. Quite a lot of people prefer Elves to Dwarves. Not all, but many. :) (I'm one of them. Though I don't dislike Dwarves, per se - I'm just neutral on them.)

I play dwarves and elves roughly about a 80/20 mix dwarf / elf, I have a 5thLvl Wild Elf Scout but he is very much a loner. Bjorn Delzounblood is a recreation of an old 2e char and I must admit the last couple of days have been damn good fun, I love to knock heads with orc's.

But each to there own, I respsect your choices, I see that dedicating yourself fully to one race deepens the whole RP in RPG aspect.

My NWN server is a dwarven city set in the Realms (under a previously unknown mountain near the north end of the Far Forest). One thing that has bothered me about my NPCs is that they speak proper common.

I'd like to see a description of "dwarven slang" or, in other words, a detailed description of how to write common with a dwarven accent.

My current plan is to explain that this clan of shield dwarves are an offshoot of a hidden clan located far to the north. Since this splinter group of wanderers founded a new city they learned to speak common from traveling merchants, losing the accent they once had over many years.

Now, however, the gold dwarves of the Great Rift have sent an emissary who intends to set things right by teaching this clan to speak "proper dwarf" again. Unfortunately, other than looking up Ivan Bouldershoulder in the RA Salvatore books, I'm don't really have a good source for "dwarf speak".

Re Dwarf speak, I always use Common (english) with a throw back to the dark ages of england ............ For example;

" Ye be watchin what ye say to me form now on won't ye? ".
and
" Orcs be ugly, but none as darn ugly as ye ".

Abriviate things like this " Tis " instead of It Is and T'internet instaed of well you see what I mean!!

and throw in references to rocks and mountains!

" Yer 'ed be full o' rocks boy " and " Tough as the mountain stone". A good curse to use " By The Soul Forger "(Moradin Dwarven God)

In other words plenty of "Ye's and Yon's" also as for the sentence structure, it's almost but not as severe as Yoda from Starwars!

Try that as for a source look up the magna carta from english history to see how they spoke and wrote " In ye old days "

Also read RAS Crystal Shard trilogy " There be plenty o' yur dwarf speak in them there tomes "
And above all Family and traditon is everything to a dwarf " I swear By mi farthers farthers farthers beard I'll Kill ye orc scum" that and they HATE orcs.

Cool, thanks for the info. Maybe you can help me with one more thing. The emissary also happens to be a chef and he is going to educate this clan on proper Faerūnian dwarven dishes and drinks.

"Th' leftmost stein be yer Ale stein, next'n ov'r be yer whiskey stein and tha' big'n t' yer right be th' gutbuster stein. Best ye stay outta that'n."

Any suggestions or sources? (Other than your upcoming book of course!)

Try that as for a source look up the magna carta from english history to see how they spoke and wrote " In ye old days "
Got some great laughs out of my friends with the "magna carta" line. Is that a sign that we're D&D geeks?

Food and drink ...... Hmmmmm

Well first I'd say "Plenty O' Ale and Mead"
apart from that I don't know! I don't think from memory any source book has done a section called food fo dwarves, I would say lots of roast meat.

Oh why not try logging on to Candlekeep's forum a lot of games designers and writers use it, they might know!

Oh and we are not "geeks" we are just .................... something else!!

I've always thought of dwarves as having a Scottish accent, and I think that fits alright. A good example of how to capture this in writing can be found in the book Trainspotting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trainspotting_%28novel%29) .

OK, back on topic. I'm not sure how well known this little treasure is, and I have been keeping it to myself so my friends think I'm some kind of Forgotten Realms guru but you should find it very useful for recreating the history of the dwarves in the Forgotten Realms.

Check out: A Grand History of the Forgotten Realms
http://www.geonomicon.com/portal/

A Grand History of the Forgotten Realms combines the timelines from over 35 sourcebooks published over 15 years, into 100 pages of Forgotten Realms history.

Every event is 100% canon in Forgotten Realms lore and contains a reference to the sourcebook in which it was published.

It contains tasty little tidbits such as the following:

c. -12000 DR
- From the great migration, one isolated branch of dwarves
settle amid the isolated peaks of the Novularond, eventually
becoming known as the arctic dwarves. [885780000 p.8]

- The first dwarven settlements appear in the great mountain
range known as the Yehimal, which lies at the juncture of the
three great continents of Faerūn, Kara-Tur, and Zakhara. From
there, the earliest dwarves migrated into all three
lands. [885780000 p.8]

- The first great kingdom of the dwarves of Faerūn is centered
in the great cavern of Bhaerynden, deep beneath the
Shaar. [885780000 p.8] [TSR11509 p.19]

I found this a few years ago while searching the web for information for my Neverwinter Nights dwarven city.

But any ideas on this you or anyone else?

I've been working on my book and I currently working on Prestige Class's.
Has there been any published work on DWARVEN KNIGHTS. I ask because with so many Dwarven Kingdoms, both present and past surely there have been some.
I had hoped that the Dwarven Defender was not the only Knight type of PrC for Dwarves.
I have vauge ideas of a Squad of Dwarven Knights riding in to battle on War Boars! maybe a Paladin or two on Dire Boar steeds?
Let me know what you find or any ideas on a PrC creation....

The negative thing is that you have to look at many various books to keep up.

The Players Guide to Faerun has the Hammer of Moradin, a PrC for dwarven paladins. This would be the most knightly PrC you'll find.

There are two PrCs for dwarfs of the Great Rift. One is the Great Rift Deep Defender, which is a variant of the Dwarven Defender. The other one is the Great Rift Skyguard, a PrC for the griffon riding warriors of the Rift. It's in Races of Faerun. In this book, you can also find the Dwarven Battlerager (aka 'Axe Idiot' :D ).

You may want to look at Races of Stone. It is a generic book about dwarfs, gnomes and goliaths (a new race of giant spawn). It's a very good book and has a few dwarf PrCs and feats.

For other fitting or dwarven specific PrCs, you can look at Complete Adventurer (Ollam), Complete Warrior (Dark Hunter, Stone Lord), Complete Divine (Warpriest), Silver Marches (Giant Killer, Horde Breaker), and the PDF 'Prestige of the Realms' made by Thomas Costa.

My wife actually plays, DMs and builds mods for Neverwinter Nights and she still thinks I'm obsessed with D&D.

Anyway, I saw you ask about information on Delzoun in another thread. As far as 3rd edition sources, Lost Empires of Faerūn has good information on the early dwarven kingdoms including, Delzoun and Ammarindar and the kingdom they both came from High Shanatar.

For older edition sources, there is info on Delzoun here: The North (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frx/20050428a)

Tiptop.

I think the Dwarven history of intense close quarters combat militates against a cavalry tradition and gravitates toward elite heavy infantry.

I'm suprised that dwarves in FR lore haven't made more use of canines for war beasts, gaurd dogs, and beasts of burden. They don't work well for medium dwarves as mounts, but steadfast, hardworking, loyal, stout, and fierce companions would seem very appropriate for Dwarves.

Work in progress.

I'm working on this as a generic body guard class for FR.

SHIELD GUARD
Shield Guards represent the various kinds of elite body guards in various cultures. They can be as varied as the elite royal guards of sundry royal families, the fanatical personal guard of a high priest, or even members of an elite guild of personal protectors.

Variants:
Dwarven Shield Guard; add Race: Dwarf to the prerequisites and raise the HD to d12.
Pious Shield Guard; substitute Alignment: within two steps of deity.

Hit Die: d10.

Requirements
To qualify to become a Shield Guard, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Alignment: Any non-chaotic.
Base Attack Bonus: +4.
Skills: Listen 5 ranks, Sense Motive 5 ranks, Spot 5 ranks.
Feats: Endurance, Toughness.
Special: The character must have been chosen to serve as a personal body guard for a political, military or religious leader or be a member of some other group of elite body guards.
Class Skills
The Shield Guard’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (local, nobility and royalty, religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Ride (Dex).
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Level,BAB,FORT,REF,WILL Special
1st +1 +2 +0 +2 Defensive reaction 1/day, Alertness
2nd +2 +3 +0 +3 Uncanny dodge
3rd +3 +3 +1 +3 Defensive reaction 2/day, Heroic Shield
4th +4 +4 +1 +4 Damage reduction 1/–
5th +5 +4 +1 +4 Defensive reaction 3/day, Iron Will
6th +6 +5 +2 +5 Damage reduction 2/–, improved uncanny dodge
7th +7 +5 +2 +5 Defensive reaction 4/day, Diehard
8th +8 +6 +2 +6 Damage reduction 3/–
9th +9 +6 +3 +6 Defensive reaction 5/day
10th +10 +7 +3 +7 Damage reduction 4/–, Final Sacrifice

Class Features
All of the following are Class Features of the Shield Guard prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Shield Guards are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor, and with shields including tower shields.
Defensive reaction (Ex): The Shield Guard must stand ready to instantly sacrifice his body for his charge. The Shield Guard may take a five foot step to interpose his body and shield between his charge and harm as an immediate swift action. This provides the charge with full cover. A Shield Guard may declare a new charge only on his own action.
Alertness: The Shield Guard gains alertness as a bonus feat.
Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, a Shield Guard retains his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) regardless of being caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. (He still loses any Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.)
If a character gains uncanny dodge from a second class, the character automatically gains improved uncanny dodge (see below).
Heroic Shield (Ex): The AC bonus for the aid another action is doubled.
Damage Reduction (Ex): At 4th level, a Shield Guard gains damage reduction. Subtract 1 points from the damage the Shield Guard takes each time he is dealt damage. At 6th, 8th, and 10th level, this damage reduction increases by 1. Damage reduction can reduce damage to 0 but not below 0.
Iron will: The Shield Guard gains Iron Will as a bonus feat.
Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex): At 6th level, a Shield Guard can no longer be flanked. This defense denies rogues the ability to use flank attacks to sneak attack the Shield Guard.
The exception to this defense is that a rogue at least four levels higher than the Shield Guard can flank him (and thus sneak attack him).
If a character gains uncanny dodge (see above) from a second class the character automatically gains improved uncanny dodge, and the levels from those classes stack to determine the minimum rogue level required to flank the character.
Diehard: The Shield Guard gains Diehard as a bonus feat.
Final Sacrifice (Ex): As a final act of sacrifice or vengeance a Shield Guard may use this ability once per day to gain a +4 morale bonus to Con. The bonus lasts for as many rounds as the Shield Guards new Con bonus. The Shield Guard may only invoke this ability in the direst circumstances when they or their charge face immanent death. (DMs call!) Using this ability is an immediate free action.

Just a request take it or leave it. However, I've always thought goats get overlooked for mounts. More horse shaped than boars. Plus the extra height helps. Always seemed to me that even a dwarf's feet would be pretty close to the ground when riding a boar. Plus they rear up to butt so it'd be acrazy ride. Good luck with your book. Would be a great reource.
