I want to base a campaign around a very powerfull intelligent magic item. Has anyone ever played that before? And if so, were there any pitfalls I have to know of in advance? Any tips?

I've done a small part of a campaign where there were a lot of people after a specific powerful (though not intelligent) magic item. Kind of like The Kingless Throne by Ed where there are a lot of interested parties all converging on a single place to get a single item. Made for some very interesting fightes where there were 3 or 4 sides.

Are you planning a campaign where the PCs have the item? Are the looking for it? Protecting it? Trying to destroy it?

The biggest issue I could see is if it is so powerful that it unbalances the campaign, or makes one character more powerful than the others, and the others feel left out.

I need more information on the exact scenario to help. But generally, with intelligent magic items, and you said this one will be powerful, watch out for ego.

You may have some sword controlled PCs.

To me the most annoying thing is that it's most likly going to have an opinion on EVERYTHING that i always forget that & like the replay above me it's going to have a BIG ego if it's powerful so make them going to destroy it or make it the SAME alignment as most of the PCs, but then again a constant ego problem might make things more interesting.:)
