| Adracias05-24-05, 02:46 AM | Any of the Evil Alignments would do such if you wanted too. And yes there are plenty of ways to get it out of a Drow, just use your imagination and also hope to hell they cant get back at you if you let them go or they get away somehow. Neutral Alignments such as Chaotic Neutral (for sure), Neutral, AND MAYBE Lawful Neutral depending the circumstances, would do it. Good Alignments would most likely just search out a Good Drow to learn both from and study under them. I doubt they would resort to any type of torture. But they might try to convince a prisoner to teach them. PLUS you also need the required Skill Points if I recall to learn it, 1 point per a lang if my memory serves. |
| Weiser_Cain05-24-05, 04:11 AM | I'll meld his body with a stone wall in my study and reduce his strength so he only has enough to teach me. It's the skill point I worry about, if I do this between levels do I have to wait till I kill an ogre(or Finally finish off the drow if I can't turn him into some sort of cohort) before I can benefit from this bit of Treachery? |
| Dielzen05-24-05, 05:17 PM | Rules-wise, yes....but, special circumstances like that would garner you a skill point in games I DM, just because it makes sense. In order so no other PC felt slighted, I'd just make the PC "pay off the debt" by giving up a skill point the next time they actually level. |
| Weiser_Cain05-24-05, 05:56 PM | Well that's good and bad. I shouldn't lose a skill point for their feelings... As much as I hate it I'd think an xp hit would be more appropriate. But how much? |
| Alac Luin05-24-05, 07:17 PM | But your not looseing a skill point. You just paid it back. You need to spend a skill point to learn a languge, DM's option that you learn the language, he fronts you the skill point, you pay off that skill point when you actually have it. |
| Preternatural05-24-05, 07:20 PM | Technically, isn't it one skill point per language learned? Then why shouldn't you pay for it. By taking an XP hit, you're making a precedent to trade XP for skill points or the equivalent of skill points. Think of it this way, it takes several months at the least to learn any language with some proficiency, years to be fully fluent depending on natural grasp and true time spent. It makes sense that it will take time to learn. Maybe try this, if you're close to your next level, just wait a bit and role play out the learning here and there to highlight that your character is learning. DM might be generous and give you XP for good roleplaying to help that along. If you just leveled up, ask the DM if you could rearrange a few recent skill points to the new language. Or the DM can choose to allow one extra skill point to each character in advance, evening thinigs up, and maybe everyone gets one less next level to pay off that debt. |
