It starts at around 1 hour, 15 minutes into the podcast, and Perkins talks about the Realms. Poor audio, due to the fact it was recorded at a convention. I'll give you the highlights now.

Realms starts at 1 hour, 28 minutes.

Forgotten Realms getting a 'reboot'. Hope that people will be excited about the direction the way the setting is going.

Want to provide some concrete adventure material for DM's. Important in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide to give DM's a very narrow, focused look. Give them a very detailed area so DM's can take it and run it. Some of the Campaign Guide will be 'This is the starting town, here's some adventures'

All Realms products will follow the Show and Tell Philosophy.

'We are putting some of the Forgotten into the Forgotten Realms'. Areas left open for DM's to put in whatever they want. Put in something that's quite 'clever' for this.

----------------

And that's it, basically. It's a short clip, but meh. More of what we expected.

Thing is, I thought the Realms already had areas like that?

I am quoting this for its family-sized amount of truth. Pesky things, facts!

I always thought that for example the Border Kingdoms were such a place. Too bad the designers don't think so:confused:

-If you say the same thing over and over (Things are too developed), it becomes the percieved truth. That goes for anything.

Aye. It's a meme now.

Why? For the love of Gods why?

/sigh

My wait and see position on the new Realms continues to feel like I'm a giant shoved into halfling clothes.

Aye. It's a meme now.

-I don't know what that is, but I'm inclined to agree.
MerrikCale

what a disaster
Lord Karsus

-Where have you been? You disappear, and I notice the world begins falling apart. Coincidence?

The hypocrisy is getting to be too much for even me to take.

-I know. And, more bad news keeps piling up. If you were here more often, that might not be true. So, I am blaming your absence for what's going on.

what are you referring to? the whole abeir and toril stuff, the fact they don't think we can handle more than a handful of gods, or just the overall ruination of the Realms

I've ignored all of this for a few weeks. what other horrible ideas have they come up with that I'm missing

-Did you read the two articles that have been released? All of Halruaa exploded and is gone, for example. Maztica just literally got up and left.

I sort of knew some of the general things, such as no more Matzica (which is fine in my book) but ever since January's horrific announcement I have stayed ignorant on most of the stuff. I think I'll keep it that way for a little while longer.

Halruaa explosion and that archipel (sp?) that cuts off Chult ... collateral damage roughly 1,700,000 people. Add to that the Thayans, Mulhorandi, Shaarans and all. But it is good to know that Menzoberranzan and the Sword Coast was not that badly affected ... if at all. Wonder why? (No, I don't!)
GothicDan

02-21-08, 08:05 AM
Might it have to do with novels?

Funny thing is - I've never heard anyone, EVER, complain about the Shining South. So what do they do? Go and EXPLODE one of my top favorite countries.

Maybe they complain that Zalathorm is the king? Or that they can't play rogues and steal things in a nation so full of Wizards (my girlfriend wanted to steal in Silverymoon, I told her to stop thinking about that because the only result she'll get is jail for a long time)?

I love Halruaa, more after reading Counselors & Kings.
Lord Karsus

02-21-08, 10:02 AM

-The in-game reason is that the Spellplague "flowed around" these highly magical areas. Does that make sense? No, but whatever. The meta-game reason is that these are the areas that they consider 'Faerūn', and want to stress adventuring in.
Uzzy

02-21-08, 10:13 AM
It's a mix of Plot Armour (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PlotArmor) and Contractual Immortality (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ContractualImmortality).

Lord Karsus

-It "flowed around" some areas of high magic, but not others. Duh.

-Of course, why the Spellplague is "flowing around" areas of high magic boggles my mind, but...I mean, insects don't skirt bug zappers, do they?
GothicDan

Only the very smart ones do.

-A girl I know of was attacked by a Praying Mantis, once. We were at a party, and it happened to be outside at night. Someone noticed the bug standing on something. Eventually, it lept up and began flying around, fluttering near the outside lights before landing on her chest, where there was...plenty of landing room. She went crazy, it was pretty funny.

Indeed!

It probably has to do with the novels, but also with something Rich said in his thread a while back--the designers consider places like Silverymoon to be more of a "classic Realms locale" than, say, Halruaa, and therefore they want to encourage people to adventure in the North, Cormyr, etc.

Therefore, the places the designers want to emphasize didn't get changed around as much (and btw, I'm not saying I agree with their mentality).

-That is a great website. :)

It is funny, although the writing is a bit wonky (the second link started off with an icky, run-on sentence):

However, the dramatic tension falls flat because we know these kind of events are very seldom permanent because we would have already heard that the actor has quit or been fired.
Lord Karsus

Yeah. 1's!
Lord Karsus

02-22-08, 01:56 PM

Sure.

The 1s orbital of the electron cloud...

They call that deus-ex-machina. Essentially, it is nothing more than fluff text meant to erase a portion of Faerūn that constantly was missing on Faerūnian maps (not that it will return there now - especially if it is a chunk of islands and open sea). They could have send a falling star down on Faeūn equally well, but the bad thing would have been that the consequences to all Faerūn would have been "more" devastating. Methinks they placed a falling star on one of the Elven nations/realms in ages long gone by.

-Yes, yes, I know...

-The consequences for the meteor strike in 1374 DR was rather minimal. The epicenter of the strike, Sembia, obviously, was most effected, but we haven't heard too much about other regions being affected.

Methinks they placed a falling star on one of the Elven nations/realms in ages long gone by.

-Yes. Uvaeren in -5000 DR.
GothicDan

02-23-08, 06:13 PM
Uvaeren, the Lorelands, where a 'character' of mine once inhabited, now a Baelnorn. One of my favorite places, which I wish we knew more about. The various methods of archiving seems really interesting - crystals, etc.
