I want to introduce some new players (ie never played D&D before) to the world of Forgotten Realms.
I'd like a brief overview to give to them. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

And yes I know this is generic and open ended.

start in a small area, and don't go big at once.
Like say.. Zhentil Keep, and the Zhentarim. Describe how these work, and perhaps how the church of Bane is, and what it stands for. Then do a real small adventure.
After that, put in just a tiny bit more info.. perhaps about Cyric.
And work your way from there.

(Zhentil Keep just beeing a random place i picked, you can also do this with Thay, or Cormyr, or Waterdeep.. waterdeep is perhaps to big to start things off.. Shadowdale is always good..)

One thing that I recommend for new players who are not used to the Forgotten Realms is to start the game campaign back in time. One of the things that people associate with the FR is all the various changes that have gone on in the game world. To hurl all that at the players at one time can be a little duanting. If you start a campaign back in time and then run the events into the game world, then the players will have a real connection to those events and understand them. It will also make the FR seem a better and more "real" game world (in most cases) for the players.

I have a great place to start a game, if you are willing to do the work as the DM. There is an old FR adventure called "Ruins of Adventure". It's old 1E and based on the old PC game. It's set back in 1340 DR (or close to that date). It is a great back bone for a DnD game. To make it really good, the DM would have to flesh out the NPCs, add sub plots, and create more NPCs. Still, the game is set in a small area and takes the players to lvl 8 or so. It would be a great way to get the players used to FR. After that runs its course, you can then introduce them to the wider world and have some of the world events take place.

I did run a game that dealt with Lashan's attempt at creating a kingdom in the Dalelands. A lot of things changed in that area, particularly the elven empire disappearing and Myth Drannor opening up. You could start a game around that time period. There are other areas, like the collapse of Tethyr that you can run the players through. If they are lower level, they aren't trying to stop the country from collapsing, but perhaps can stop the destruction from being as harsh as it could be.

Just some ideas. Hope it helps.

when i am starting out new players i always start them as 0 level nobodies insome little village only the gods know about and let them travel on from there building their charaters as they learn more and more about the world around them. that way they are getting to know the world and their chatarcters at the same time it make way for a game that lasts years.

It is how i was introduced to the game and how my group and i have been introducing players aver since it seems to work for us
