Ok.. I had this question kinda going in a differant section but wasn't gettign the answers I needed so this time I'll give it a better header..

Anyway.. I was thinking about multiclassing a Monk after lvl 3 to a sorcerer but I was wondering.. if he's blind can he still be useful.. I like the idea of the character having a handicap and overcoming it.. makes him very memorable.. but is it possible?

also I considered possibly doing lvl 1 Sorcerer, then lvl 2 change to monk get to a lvl 3 monk then switiching back to Sorcerer.. could I do that?

There are many spells for which you need to see the target. These spells will definitely be a problem for a blind caster.

I once had a blind NPC spellcaster though (diviner/cleric/mystic theurge) who was able to see through the eyes of her familiar.

I thought that you weren't able to do that though .. i thought the link was just emotion and such. I had this same thought as well but after i read up on familiars doesn't look possible..

Interesting question but more info is needed - first is the character blind from birth or did they become blind after learning to see (yes learning to see the really hard thing about beingblind is that you have no concept of vision - same for deafness. what they are finding in modern research on this is that you have to actually teach such folks who are now being given (limited) senses what the are experiencing and how to do so) so a blind from birth person I would say no they can't. some one who went blind after learning to see - yes they wouldprobably have to be sorcerers first since they can't read spellbooks. but once they get to a level where they can cast things like clairvoyance it would be possible to become a wizard (I would rule that this (and similar) spell(s) essentially bypasses the eyes and links the info directly to the vision systems in the brain). The types of spells they could use would be limited still as mentioned above but some feats like scent, blindfighting, blindsight, tremorsense, etc might be acceptable alternates for many "vision required" spells or a well researched facsimile.

Well I was thinking blind from birth.. but perhaps maybe he was blinded at a yougn age when his parents caravan was attacked.. thats hwo he wound up at the monastary.. i was goign to use blindfighting yes.. but blindsense isn't in the 3.5 PH. also the spellbook thing i didn't even think about but yeah that poses a problem on scrolls.. unless they are in brail lol.. but a sorcerer doesn't need spellbooks doe he? I thought it was a given abilitie and doesn't have to relearn spells.. i might be wrong on that but i thought it was the differance between wizard and sorcerer

I thought that you weren't able to do that though

Officially you are right, but that's the fun of being a DM - you get to decide what works and what doesn't. If you want something like this, talk to your DM. :)

but a sorcerer doesn't need spellbooks doe he?
correct - once he learns the spell he knows it and can cast it spontaneously up to his limit each day so he doesn't need a spellbook.

but blindsense isn't in the 3.5 PH. its generally an ability of dragons and some of the underdark races (grimlocks). If you or your DM has the underdark book you might look the grimlock over for ideas as to how to do this - I would probably give you the scent, blindsinse and immunities as a +1LA with the same problems and with losing the immunity to illusions etc when using clairvoyance.

Blindsight 5-60 feet, in some kinda way (the Blindfight feat grants 5 feet blind-"vision", some races gets blindsight 30-60 feet as a racial bonus etc...) Wouldn't that work?:)

blindsight and blindsense are listed on p.290 -291 of the DMG with info on how they work.
