I am part of a game that has just started, We have;

Warlock/Tiefling
Druid/Human
Ranger/Gnome
Rogue/Hafling
Barbarian/Half-Orc

My Brother is now playing a Warmage/Kalashtar. His original character was a Favored Soul/Elf. The DM didnt want him to play the Favored Soul b/c he would be to powerful of a character. My brother convinced the DM(Buddies forthe last six years) to give him five minutes of play to show that the character isnt to powerful for the group.

We all started playing the game. The DM starting the storyline on how we all know each othe, the group all realized that my brothers char wasn't there. Right before I asked about it , the DM said " you all see a blue flash come from the forest and you hear a man yell." The group raced to the see to witness that the Favored Soul was dead. A magic Scimitar through his head. We asked the DM why he killed the character off, he said" I just wasnt willng to have such a powerful character upset the balance of the group.

I understand if the DM doesnt want it in his game. But allowing someone to believe that they are given a chance to play a character class only to have it Murdered in your own game. Is a Favored Soul to powerful for this group? If so, can somebody tell me.

Whether the Favored Soul is too powerful or not, regardless if it's actually overpowered or if it's all in the DM's head, letting a player think he's allowed to play a character only to kill him without a word is utterly and unequivocally wrong. The DM should also realize that by his actions, he proves the Favored Soul isn't overpowered. :P

Friend or not, I would have walked out and brought as many of the players away with me. It seemed to have broken a few basic rules of courtesy and decency.

Powerful compared to what though? Fighters? Any decently planned spellcaster can beat a fighter at higher levels. Versus Wizards, Clerics and Druids, the Favored Sould (IMO) is just average.

your DM sucks!

REALLY!!!

that is NO way to lead a game! and WHY does he not simply forbids those (pretty well balanced) classes in advance?

A Favored Soul is kinda powerful, but not any more overwhelming powerful than a Cleric.

Biggest thing a Favored Soul has over a Cleric is all their saves are Good saves.

Clerics have a Bigger Spell List vs Favored Souls have More Per Day.
Clerics Turn Undead and have Domains vs Favored Souls get some nice abilities at later levels.
Clerics can wear Heavy Armor vs Favored Souls being limited to Medium Armor.

Yea, the big thing it comes down to is Turn Undead and Domains (and Domain Powers) vs the Favored Soul Class Abilities. This question was asked on a few times on the Class boards and I believe more then half go with cleric most of the time.

By giving up Turn undead you give up access to Divine Feats.

so the favored soul is too powerful... BUT he allows someone to play a warlock?????

If anything is overpowered it's that warlock.

And while we're at it, where the heck did a Kalashtar come from in Faerun?

Bah, there is nothing wrong with the Warlock, I say ban the druid :P

I have two people in my group that complain when I enforce the magic-psionics transparency rules in a FR game, quoting sections of novels that states you can use psionics in an antimagic field, then turn around and play a cleric of Pelor...

I know I'm powerful, but overpowered?
Hmmm..... I guess I am, after all the last time I tried to stat me, I gave up around level 200 or so.... ;) :P
Darn its hard to stat a character that has been played for the better part of 20some years....

I sent my DM a PM rigth before Worldwide D&D day asking if I could play "Iggy McStickson, lvl 4 Commoner"

I had max ranks in "Craft (Stick)" and Skill focus Craft (stick) and weapon focus (stick).

He told me when he read it that he spit tea all over his computer screen.
