I'm trying to determine if a PC who knows Gutterspeak will understand a conversation in Cant. Wether both are derived from same Root so to speak or if one is a street language and the other a thief language.

they might be able to pick up a word or phrase here and there, but i don't they could converse or even understand all of a conversation.

What is Gutterspeak?!?

I know there are/was Assassin's Cant, Thieves' Cant, and Druidic as far as languages for specific classes went.

:Tears of Joy at having attained a degree of sage status now that I know something Warlocko didn't :D :D :D :
Ok seriously, they added it in races of Destiny which I think is one of the well rounded and useful books for many uses printed this year so far. Suppose to be a slang, pidgin street language which I assume Cant is derived from since a thief is the most well-known and youngest profession anyone can fall into. So thats why I asked if the language would be similar.

Ah okay that is why I don't know about it. Races of Destiny is one of the few books that I don't have that is on the very bottom of my to get list. (This counts several 3rd Party books for settings like Warcraft, Iron Kingdoms, The Black Company, and a few others)

Somehow I knew you were going to say something like that, LOL.

I don't think they'd be the same language, but probably similar (I'd lower the SP cost for learning one if you know the other) My understanding of "Thieves' Cant" is that it is a "professional language" (there arns of those in european history, slang mixed with various langauges, but almost entirely dealing with their chosen profession) sotarmoj, månsing, etc. etc.

Gutterspeak would be a general slang/pidgin language (akin to Rhyming Cockney slang I'd guess) The main difference would probably be that Cant would be very useful when discussing criminal activities, but wouldn't have words for stuff outside it's "area" while Gutterspeak would be a real, hodge-podge langauge, with no particular focus.

So would it be safe to assume the following:

Chondathan is to Common

as

Thieves' Cant is to Gutterspeak?

Actually I'd say the reverse: Cant would the specialist language (as Common is the "specialist" language of traders and adventurers)
