| Sol_Odlanier11-17-07, 09:23 PM | Seems to me that people lost interest ....:( |
| Butterface11-17-07, 09:24 PM | No, I still check these threads daily. |
| johnkretzer11-17-07, 09:25 PM | ? What do you mean? |
| MarkusTay6311-17-07, 09:29 PM | It does seem to have slowed down a bit lately. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-17-07, 09:51 PM | I come here every day too (that's how I can tell) there no new threads and/or people stick to the old ones I used to come here to get good lore about the realm and now I just see either nothing or people running around like headless chickens Spelling doom forom 4E to the realms and when they talk about the realms they talk as if they're in a funneral of a uncle or something... it seems so...gloomy here lately I guess my English inpareness doesnt let me describe it... |
| MarkusTay6311-17-07, 10:15 PM | We still have a few projects pluggin' along, like the Elven Netbook, Utter East, and Kara-Tur threads, and not too long ago there was one on the Old Empires and another on Maztica. Also, I believe someone has a "Create an NPC" thread going, and there was a "create a god" thread in the Cosmology forum that is probably only a page or two back. Sometimes it's a little hard to find the 'good' these days, what with all the comotion going on. Its difficult to be creative when everything you do might be 'un-done' by the new setting in a few months. But we still try, despite the Dark cloud on the horizon. ;) |
| MerrikCale11-17-07, 10:19 PM | It probably has slowed down with the devasation Richard Baker is apparently going to unleash |
| MarkusTay6311-17-07, 10:34 PM | One could say the setting is getting Toasted... or Baked. ;) |
| Sol_Odlanier11-17-07, 10:56 PM | :heehee One could say the setting is getting Toasted... or Baked. ;)  :heehee |
| David_Eitelbach11-17-07, 11:43 PM | 4E speculation has been done to death. These days, I just try to avoid threads about the 4E Realms entirely - and considering that the majority of threads on the FR forums seem to be about 4E these days, I don't bother with them. Still, this does not mean that I have lost interest in FR, and I imagine that I'm not the only person who feels this way. |
| 18DELTA11-18-07, 12:14 AM | Wow guys!!!:D And for old times sake "Richard Baker must be stopped!!!":D  |
| ORC_Paradox11-18-07, 03:49 AM | No, people don't lose interest. Things tend to cycle down around here. Perhaps it's vacation time, or kids at school are taking tests. We even have topic cycles as well. So don't fret. They will be back. |
| Stigger11-18-07, 11:23 AM | Or maybe its just that pre-holiday stress being taken out on 4e... rapidly approaching mid-terms... lots of reasons this stuff happens, like Paradox said. |
| Asberdies11-18-07, 01:42 PM | Wow guys!!!:D And for old times sake "Richard Baker must be stopped!!!":D  I see a lot of people thgat signs their thread with a We must stop Richad Baked or something similar. I think his work is great but i still love the Forgotten Realms so when i had to buy my 3rd edition Campaing Setting i chosed the Realms, we must work together and give life to the realms, there are a lot of potential there, if Eberron is a great campaing setting that split waters we canīt stop that but we can work to gain more people to these waters and our cause, even steal some good ideas :D . Long live the Realms!!!! We are not going to surrender! :fight!: We have the Baldurs Gate Saga and the NWN, Eberron has nothing yet!!!!! We have near 20 years of life Eberron may die tomorrow, FR is a Classic. |
| olympos11-18-07, 01:55 PM | a lot of people who play the "forgotten realms" setting don't know there is a forum to discuss topics of interrest. I have played FR for over 6 or 7 years now and discovered the forum recently. :) |
| Lord Karsus11-18-07, 04:46 PM | -Things'll pick back up. The most active times are winter, late spring and late fall (I think). I'm always hanging out here, though. ;) |
| Suin Bahhar11-18-07, 05:26 PM | I help wherever I can. *Bows gracefully* |
| Craig C.11-18-07, 06:30 PM | I'd be curious to see what the traffic rate is over on the Eberron boards. I've always wondered if the FR forums lost any regulars or potential new regulars to the Eberron boards since it recently came out. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-18-07, 10:28 PM | I hope I'm wrong and is just what Patadox said. and about Eberron..... WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?! |
| johnkretzer11-18-07, 11:46 PM | I hope I'm wrong and is just what Patadox said. and about Eberron..... WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?! Yeah I just think the boards themselves are a bit slow right now. And Eberron boards even look slower then here. Though I might suggest that it is also caused by part the edition change. I think when we'll see some of the preview book next month we'll see more activity. Enjoy the quiet before the storm. |
| Charles Phipps11-18-07, 11:49 PM | Bah, this isn't slow. Slow is the Planewalker boards. Only a few posts every day, tis tragic. |
| Dark Wizard11-19-07, 12:13 AM | I think the announced changes for 4E played a role in the boards' recent atmosphere. The 4E announced events and the hints by the designers really casted FR in a negative light (almost as if the setting was already hopelessly lost and needed some miracle to resurrect it). At least with many of the 4E rules hints the designers pointed out 3e mechanics they felt were clunky and hinted at how 4E handles them better. Heck, even with the core flavor changes they at least provided fans with something along the lines of: "Devils and Demons will be differentiated this way," "Heironious and Hextor will be replaced by Bahamut and Bane as core gods." With FR they just burned out whole sections but haven't talked about anything that replaces it. I think it led to a very downing effect on the boards. Hopefully the atmosphere picks up after a time. |
| Lord Karsus11-19-07, 12:15 AM | Bah, this isn't slow. Slow is the Planewalker boards. Only a few posts every day, tis tragic. -Slow is, say, the Mystara boards. |
| MarkusTay6311-19-07, 03:18 AM | Slow is the Planewalker boards. Only a few posts every day, tis tragic.Slow is the Birthright boards - I think the last post is a few years old. But thats NOT tragic...not at ALL. :D |
| Charles Phipps11-19-07, 03:40 AM | Birthright was pretty good. I give it props for giving rules to handling quickenings in D&D. ;-) |
| Stigger11-19-07, 11:31 AM | Sounded like an interesting premise, although financially I was never able to look into it much when it came out. |
| MaskedOne11-19-07, 02:06 PM | My normal method of net access currently and for the near future is screwy and does not get along with Gleemax. Combine that with a degree of crankiness associated with FR that will probably last until the new FRCG comes out and I have a chance to decide whether I'm sticking with the setting or re-routing the cash I spend on FR to World of Darkness, end result, I will not be around half as much as I used to. Can't speak for anyone else. |
| Lord Karsus11-19-07, 05:34 PM | ...end result, I will not be around half as much as I used to. :plotting: :evillaugh |
| Stigger11-19-07, 06:58 PM | Now I wonder why that's worrying me... hmmm... wait, it isn't... |
| Lord Karsus11-19-07, 07:28 PM | Now I wonder why that's worrying me... hmmm... wait, it isn't... -The MaskedOne checked my own power. Without him checking it- and with Mystra soon to be dead- the possibilities are endless! |
| MaskedOne11-19-07, 07:44 PM | -The MaskedOne checked my own power. Without him checking it- and with Mystra soon to be dead- the possibilities are endless! Dead is relative, Lord Karsus, especially where the Lady of Mysteries or I are concerned. However, both of us have far too much work to do preparing contingencies to sustain her elsewhere if not on Toril and to remove certain lingering projects that would go odd without her. As such, the secondary key controlling Velsharoon's power is hidden in that spell chamber in the ruins of your enclave along with a detailed analysis of the ritual he used for ascension and how that ritual ties into and may be used against Talos. Avoid smiting the Chosen or interrupting our remaining projects and we'll stay out of your way for the most part till 1385 where we may be out of your way for quite some time. Stigger, if my absence actually concerned you then I'd be profoundly worried. That it does not is a good thing. |

I'll just pick up my power and all, and be on my way. From what Savras is saying, Realmspace in not the place to be for the next couple of years. |
| Stigger11-19-07, 08:04 PM | I was more looking forward to putting an end to whatever :plotting: and :evillaugh LK Might come up with, and profitting immeasurably from the havoc I wreak upon him... er... We even have topic cycles as well. So don't fret. They will be back. Was gonna say the same thing, I'm subscribed to a coupla car forums and the Co* Forum as well and only the CoH seems to be chugging along roght now. |
| LordAiden11-24-07, 11:34 PM | a lot of people who play the "forgotten realms" setting don't know there is a forum to discuss topics of interrest. I have played FR for over 6 or 7 years now and discovered the forum recently. :) That's the truth. I've been running FR campaigns since... well let's just say a lot of my source books say "TSR" on the front. I've only discovered these forums in the past few days. |
| OrderofUhlrik11-29-07, 10:11 PM | -The MaskedOne checked my own power. Without him checking it- and with Mystra soon to be dead- the possibilities are endless! That's why I've arrived. There will always come a check for the unchecked. Unless they skip work too often... >.> <.< |

| Alkasyn12-02-07, 07:40 AM | That's the truth. I've been running FR campaigns since... well let's just say a lot of my source books say "TSR" on the front. I've only discovered these forums in the past few days. Same here, I believe i found these forums because I needed some information on Fey'Ri and stayed because of the amount of information aviable. |
| Gray Richardson12-02-07, 08:43 PM | My impression is that the true reason the FR boards have slowed down is that the Signal to Noise Ratio has dwindled to next to nothing. The shrill, negative posters have driven away most of the interesting and enthusiastic posters. People that come to these boards to discuss interesting ideas find mostly just a bunch of juvenile, negative and off topic posts that vilify WotC, the designers, the setting, and anyone that disagrees with them. The boards have been overrun with soccer hooligans. It has become a bad neighborhood. No one wants to come here and engage in creative discourse for fear the thread will be derailed by off topic conversation. Or for fear they will be attacked by the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism. The hecklers have taken over the boards. Generally people come to a forum when they are excited about what is being discussed. They read and participate when the threads make them feel good about their hobby. They become engaged when the ideas and creativity are free-flowing. They feel good about participating when it makes them feel part of something bigger and better than themselves. Sadly, these boards have become a downer. There is no joy here in Mudville. People come looking for fun and a good conversation but finding none they lurk silently or lose interest altogether. The voices of people who are excited about the game and their campaigns have been drowned out. I don't see the creative and exciting people coming back for awhile until the tenor of the boards changes to a less negative tone. Wizo Paradox is correct, these things tend to run in cycles, people will eventually come back to the boards when the "noise" dies down and the "signal" increases to more useful levels. When the percentage of posts containing nifty ideas increases, when posters start to have a little joy and enthusiasm for the setting, and when the percentage of complaints and negative posts decreases, then you might start to see more participation, more interesting threads spring up and more engaging posts proliferate. :twocents: |
| GothicDan12-02-07, 10:38 PM | I expect it's because the only real FR 'buzz' is the new stuff, and people can only discuss it (negatively OR positively) so many times, with what we know. I'm not about to lay the blame on either side. |

This always happens...probably around this time of year too I'll wager. It is a very busy time right now. There is no reason to insult people and throw mud. |
| Dark Wizard12-03-07, 12:10 AM | I notice most of the same posters sticking around as usual. Very few of the regulars have left (and no, not all of them are negative and anti-4e-FR). At the same time there have been a handful of new posters or lurkers popping in to voice an opinion of the previews of the upcoming 4E FR stuff. It seems like business as usual for the most part. The designers still have yet to release any information on a 'positive' aspect of the new Realms, either something that stays the same from the old Realms (I guess that's merely neutral) or a new feature of the Realms we can look forward too (like a new nation, organization, or god). They keep hinting at more negative changes (subtractive, reduction, reorganization). Until something additive is mentioned, I don't expect the negativity to abate. The few Realmslore articles we've gotten seem to be mostly 3.5e. The elemental observatory thing is leaning 4E, but it doesn't seem to affect anything in the long run, so it might as well not be there in regards to the general attitude towards the Realms. |
| Lord Karsus12-03-07, 12:53 AM | My impression is that the true reason the FR boards have slowed down is that the Signal to Noise Ratio has dwindled to next to nothing. The shrill, negative posters have driven away most of the interesting and enthusiastic posters. -Your theory is flawed simply because this happens all the time, the increased and decreased flows of traffic. I need not go on. |
| Ranger REG12-03-07, 01:05 AM | Seems to me that people lost interest ....:( Just Faerun. Keeping my eye on any Kara-Tur discussion. |
| Mr_Miscellany12-03-07, 01:18 AM | -Your theory is flawed <snip>Hardly. In fact it's not even a theory. Gray's observation is dead on. Thing of it is, there's only been what, two edition changes/revisions since these forums have been opened? So while Paradox can talk authoritatively about trends, that doesn't mean they can be linked to major setting revisions as their cause. The signal to noise ratio has always been terribly high on these forums, with noise the dominant. So long as WotC is content to let it remain that way, it will never, ever change. And that's terrbily ironic, given that this is all one great big marketing website anyway. :rolleye2: |
| Stigger12-03-07, 01:42 AM | Thing of it is, there's only been what, two edition changes/revisions since these forums have been opened? So while Paradox can talk authoritatively about trends, that doesn't mean they can be linked to major setting revisions as their cause. Wasn't that LK's point though? That there isn't necessarily a link between this new edition and the perceived inactivity/whatever? Personally it seems to have picked up a bit in the last few days, though I expect that as the holidays approach it'll slow down a bit again, and pick up eventually, only to slow down once more as something else happens. Gray seems to blame the inactivity on the 'negativism', which I solidly disagree with. And from that statement of yours up there, you seem to disagree with his assessments as well. Unless I'm misunderstanding that last sentence there... |
| Dark Wizard12-03-07, 01:46 AM | Hey, maybe that's why the Realms is faltering according to WotC, too much general negativity on the boards, I guess that translate to negative marketing. Though who's fault is it really? For the most part we only take what WotC gives us. |
| Gray Richardson12-03-07, 02:54 AM | Though who's fault is it really? For the most part we only take what WotC gives us.That's a really big cop out. It shows a staggering lack of creativity to expect WotC to spoon-feed us things to talk about. FR lore is so detailed and interesting, there is enough material to discuss for a hundred years to come, even if WotC were never to publish another word of Realmslore. These forums are a place for the FR community to come together and discuss nifty ideas and voice their opinions. Threads have always been generated by members who have something interesting to say, or a question to ask. So if traffic is down on these forums, well then, I think it is a fair question to ask whether the vociferously negative people have created a gloomy-gus atmosphere, and have driven other fans away. At the very least, the fans that remain seem to be saying little if anything of interest. If there is a dearth of interesting threads and posts, then, may I suggest you start some? If you have something exciting or interesting to say then I am sure people will want to discuss it with you. |
| Dark Wizard12-03-07, 03:59 AM | There we go assuming those who even glance at WotC lack creativity. Is it our fault that WotC places their logo in every FR product, control the Realms property, continually hire some of the most reputable experts on the setting and basically controls every official aspect of the Realms from which most Realms players start at? I was merely pointing out that WotC has a a good amount of control over establishing the atmosphere of these forums and the Realms in general (or any of their settings and product lines for that matter). I believe that WotC's latest products have set a very negative atmosphere for the setting which is reflected in the threads (based on only revealing subtractive, destructive changes to the Realms and none of the positive, constructive features). Some here attributed these thread topics to driving away participants, thus reducing the activity on the forum. Unfortunately for the time being, the seemingly most interesting and exciting topic to discuss so happens to be the 4E changes which have set the negative mood on the forum. It is a difficult topic to break out of because the main initiative is not in the hands of the fans but rather WotC, which has legal and business obligations to withhold information until they are ready to release it. WotC created a very effective topic sink that draws most threads into the 4E discussion eventually. I think it mostly has to do with the looming uncertainty of 4E. So you can't blame the posters here too much, WotC got the ball rolling and it's mostly up to them to stop it. If it bothers you so much you can try to reverse the trend by creating topics to discuss aspects of the Realms not related to the eminent coming of 4E FR. |
| Stigger12-03-07, 04:54 AM | Gray, you might consider that some might think there's little point to discussing previously published lore when it looks like much its going to be destroyed or invalidated by 4e. Just think of AGHotR and all the interesting sidebars that came with it. Not much of it was discussed due to the last two pages of the book, which has so far dominated the topics around here. I can't think of any clearer evidence that exists that those last two pages were the equivalent of a tactical nuke going off and pretty much obliterated any other topics being discussed. I don't recall much of anything that those sidebars covered that's been brought up to be honest, which tells me that what seems like the majority around here are fairly well focused on the coming changes, and are largely viewing them in the negative. Really, those two pages blew everything that was positive about AGHotR out of the water. I'm almost sure you'll disagree with my conclusion, but I'd say the fault of that lays with WotC for dropping such a huge plotline on us with such little detail. I think in a lot of ways it did Brian, and everybody else who worked on it, a huge disservice, and has left a lot of their hard work and effort fairly well ignored by the its enormity of impact on the Realms. |
| Lord Karsus12-03-07, 08:54 AM | Thing of it is, there's only been what, two edition changes/revisions since these forums have been opened? So while Paradox can talk authoritatively about trends, that doesn't mean they can be linked to major setting revisions as their cause. -When you've spend a little more time here, Mr. Misc, then let's talk. -As I said earlier, and this has been echoed by others, there are "Up Times", and there are "Down Times", that have nothing to do with products that have been released, are being released, or are going to be released. The early winter (Dec.ish) is traditionally a "Down Time", meaning that there are less people prowling the boards. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-03-07, 09:57 AM | Ummm. I haven't seen any huge difference in the number of people posting. |
| WizO_Kayn12-03-07, 10:19 AM | Please remember as you post, edit yourself for what could be called namecalling or remarks that you know will cause someone to take offense. You can disagree, but keep flames or baiting out of it. Civility, humor - both work in disagreements and are much more entertaining for readers Thanks and Cheers! WizO Kayn |
| GothicDan12-03-07, 01:41 PM | In fact it's not even a theory. Gray's observation is dead on. Wow. I guess this is why I stick to the sciences. :) Without actual verification through specific, repeatable experiments, an observation is no more true than any other isolated circumstance. |
| OrderofUhlrik12-03-07, 02:17 PM | I started posting here because I was genuinely dissapointed with the general amount of pessimism on the boards, but then I realized that some of it had genuine causes that stem from the 4e changes. So to me, I haven't lost interest in FR threads, but I notice its usually the same group of posters who respond when I type. Thats nice in a way, the personal level of familiarity you can get with the same people. But then again without new blood we end up rehashing the same topic repeatedly and to be honest most everyone here is so set in their opinion an arguement usually ends in a draw no matter. Not that I expect anything different, we're all humans after all. I agree, its probably just seasonal. Finals and the Holidays put a damper on a lot of people's free time. |
| GothicDan12-03-07, 02:21 PM | Finals and the Holidays put a damper on a lot of people's free time. Quoted for truth. |
| WizO_Brak12-05-07, 03:31 PM | I've deleted a large amount of off topic posts. Please keep the thread on the orginal topic, otherwise it may be closed and the offenders could find themselves on the receiving end of the 'warn stick'. I'd prefer that things don't get to that point though, so please stay focused. :) ~Brak |
| Mr_Miscellany12-05-07, 11:30 PM | -When you've spend a little more time here, Mr. Misc, then let's talk. If you only knew.... :::::::::::: I don't think there's much positive interest that lasts long in people. What bums me out is a potential repeat of what happened on these forums as 3E got under way. To start, we've got 4E....people could easily complain about it in general and its effects on the Realms in particular for at least another year and a half. Next, throw in anyone who refuses to give 4E a reasonable shot. I'm certain will always have a handful of folks that will do naught else but wax nostalgic about how much 'better' 2E and 3E were and so spend their time trying to ruin people's fun with the Realms in 4E before they can even get started. This type of posting should start as 4E FR gets under way and ought to last at least two years, methinks. Then throw in the folks who have nothing much else to do but criticize anything new for the Realms in 4E. This ought to last as long as 4E FR is in print. The negative-nellys could become legion, I fear. |
| Fingoldfin12-05-07, 11:58 PM | [QUOTE=Gray Richardson;14487570] So if traffic is down on these forums, well then, I think it is a fair question to ask whether the vociferously negative people have created a gloomy-gus atmosphere, and have driven other fans away. At the very least, the fans that remain seem to be saying little if anything of interest. It is also a fair question to ask if the 4e changes are themselves driving away fans of the Realms from the forums. My brother showed me the forums. He didn't post very often, but he liked to read many of the threads for character ideas and to learn what books were coming out. He would go to the Realms website a couple times a week. Now he doesn't want to know anything about the Realms in 4e. He hates the changes and swears that he won't buy anything new. He said he doesn't even want to finish Realms books that he already owns. I'm not buying 4e, but I will finish the trilogies I started. I think that the forums slowed down because this is a busy time of year. I just posted this because it seems to be a fair question to ask. |
| GothicDan12-06-07, 01:43 AM | . Then there's some of us who have no nostalgia to wax about, but still prefer the older lore. :) |
| Mr_Miscellany12-06-07, 01:48 AM | Then there's some of us who have no nostalgia to wax about, but still prefer the older lore. :) I dunno Dan...sometimes you fit the nostalgia category pretty good. ;) :::::::::::: I'm just worred the general level of negativism will morph into a pocket of folks being actively anti-4E, to the point that new folks get drowned out. The Realms won't be helped if that happens. |
| GothicDan12-06-07, 01:50 AM | Nostalgia, to me, implies a certain level of having been actively involved in a previous generation. I'm more of an anachronism. :) That being said... I really am not fond of the "anti-negativity" crowd. I'm a very negative, but optimistic person. It's made me pretty happy so far, so from a personal point of view, it's hard for me to figure out why it would turn off others. I guess social paradigms don't all shift about with the same frequency, eh? Mmm, wine. |
| Stigger12-06-07, 01:53 AM | Even if there isn't a level of negativism, there's still a level of tribalism, so to speak, that comes about with an established community, not just here really, so that barrier is just as daunting in a lot of respects... if not more so to a new person coming onto the boards. Just one of those things with social dynamics really. |
| Dark Wizard12-06-07, 02:22 AM | Even if the negativity is affecting the boards, I don't think active, confrontational 'anti-negativity' is the wisest way of preventing a negativity sinkhole for topics. It just exacerbates the situation, furthering the fear of a one-topic forum. Shifting the discussions to more regular Realms talk is probably the only long term solution to this, but few of those have stated up, and of those many lack momentum in that a few replies usually has them answered. In my opinion, it doesn't help that WotC spouts the same "old FR sucks because" arguments every time they make a reply, interview, or preview. It just rubs many old fans the wrong way so the cycle begins anew. There comes a point where I think people understand that the change to the new system is inevitable. At that time (which I think is well past given the rate news spreads nowadays), I think WotC really should have something new to tell us instead of driving the same stake into the heart of the old Realms again and again. So far we've been told the new Realms will not have a lot of this or that, but not so much what it does have or will have. There is a lot of "we will do this better, trust us" but seeing as WotC just removed several pieces of the Realms, that trust is a bit difficult to give at the moment. WotC is essentially running with scissors through the room. Some of the fans got cut by them, but WotC is telling us everything is okay, even though they're still running around the room with scissors. When they stop things will get better, but the longer they wait, the more frightening it gets for some fans because more things have a chance of getting the snip. |

| Alediran12-06-07, 08:24 AM | I'm just worred the general level of negativism will morph into a pocket of folks being actively anti-4E, to the point that new folks get drowned out. The Realms won't be helped if that happens. If GH at the end became what was meant to be after it's fall during 2ed then I'll be at the front of the grognard party bashing the 4ed realms until they sink so low that WoTC will actually loose money and returns to Ed and the players. Numerologicaly it's fitting, GH falled during 2ed, FR will fall during 4ed |

| MarkusTay6312-09-07, 02:56 AM | I guess it all depends on the Netherese naming conventions - would 'Kar' be the surname, or 'Sus'? Also, I'm picturing a sort of Frye "I'm my own Grandpa" type of creation myth for the momentery god - perhaps he stumbled upon some of the earlier work of the Chronomancer. ;) |

| Karsus the Mad12-09-07, 01:49 PM | -Where in the text does it actually say that Karsus went to school? :P NEoM. He was taken in and taught by priests of Mystryl at an early age. He didn't like it much. He thought himself worthy to be a god, which obviously made him a fine candidate for archwizardry. What was your full name? Karsus of Netheril. There isn't really much of a naming convention for Netheril. Most are simple single names, with either the place of birth or the place they became famous, and sometimes just a nickname taking the place of any surname. Karsus of Netheril, Ioulaum of Seventon, Aumvor the Undying, etc. Most however are merely single names. Btw, Karsus is immune to binding... Karsus the Mad must have a semblance of his own full name somewhere in his cobwebbed mind. Maybe the pawns of Shar can confuse the Karsii enough for an opportune moment of distraction... I'm sure I do. However, I'm paranoid enough to never tell myself the important things. What kind of security would I have if I went around telling myself all the things I shouldn't know? I wouldn't want to get myself in trouble with myself afterall. I can be a really pricky boss, and I'd hate to upset myself by accidentally telling myself something I shouldn't know. Just best to leave all the cobwebs alone. |
| Lord Karsus12-09-07, 02:06 PM | NEoM. He was taken in and taught by priests of Mystryl at an early age. -That wasn't formal schooling. If I recall, they were teaching us... -Oh no! The memories are flooding back! -We were abused by the clergy of Mystryl as a child! Oh, why!? :weep: Btw, Karsus is immune to binding... -Not if you follow what's in that dumb Tome of Magic. I was flipping through that book, and man, I don't like it. |
| Suin Bahhar12-09-07, 02:26 PM | I like True naming though. I would adapt truenaming to make it more fitting with current realmsian magics. Having arcane "skill tricks" would best represent the secrets of truenaming I guess, spiking regular spells as a swift action with true names to incease spell penetration or to have dublication effects. So you think we should jump threads as this one has already been snipped for of topicnes? |
| Karsus the Mad12-09-07, 03:01 PM | -That wasn't formal schooling. If I recall, they were teaching us... The clergy for the goddess of magic...about as formal as one can get outside of state sponsored academies. -Oh no! The memories are flooding back! -We were abused by the clergy of Mystryl as a child! Oh, why!? :weep: Looks like we need more therapy....and people wonder why we had issues with Mystryl... -Not if you follow what's in that dumb Tome of Magic. I was flipping through that book, and man, I don't like it. Obviously we don't follow it:) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-09-07, 07:14 PM | -We were abused by the clergy of Mystryl as a child! Oh, why!? :weep: That explains so much...:( Your true name, by the way, is Baldy McPaisley. |
| Vulpes12-09-07, 11:04 PM | In response to the original thread question, if the threads have slowed down (and I don't know if that's actually true without statistics), I don't think it's terribly surprising. With the initial GHotR and Orc King prologue buzz died down, it's going to be a long, long while before there's anymore FR stuff, so there's not much to talk about until 4e comes out. And what little the developers have let out about 4e FR goes in a very predictable pattern of discussion here: someone does a blog post or an interview and lets some detail out, the lovely Rinonalyrna Fathomlin and other anti-4e partisans wail and gnash teeth, someone bellyaches that they're not giving 4e a shot, most of us who are sort of in-between don't say much because moderation doesn't really make for interesting board conversation, and eventually the thread becomes a series of jokes between the Karsi and a few others. Now, none of this is "bad" or invalid, but I think it all does put a damper on things. Just MHO. |
| Lord Karsus12-10-07, 10:43 AM | I like True naming though. I would adapt truenaming to make it more fitting with current realmsian magics. Your true name, by the way, is Baldy McPaisley. -The full head of hair I am currently playing with says otherwise. -By the way, did anyone notice the mighty spell I cast in a very discrete way? |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-10-07, 11:44 AM | someone does a blog post or an interview and lets some detail out, the lovely Rinonalyrna Fathomlin and other anti-4e partisans wail and gnash teeth... Hmmm...nope, haven't wailed OR gnashed any teeth yet, sorry to correct you.:) I would appreciate if you would refrain from exaggerating like that about people from now on. I'm not an "anti-4E" partisan, as I'm neutral about the new rules, I just dislike the changes to the Realms. The next time someone designates a "tribe" for me the way you just did, I will report their post. Thank you. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-10-07, 11:45 AM | -The full head of hair I am currently playing with says otherwise. You are bald in spirit.;) |
| Stigger12-10-07, 05:11 PM | Either that or a very skilled illusionist to only make us think he has a full head of hair... or maybe there really is hair there. Never know with the Karsii... |
| Eli_the_Tanner12-12-07, 01:18 AM | Hello there Everyone. I've only recently got back into the boards after a somewhat disconnected few months. I have noted that I'm finding it difficult to get stuck into the threads again for some reason - they all seem somehow diluted!? It appears that the 4Ed plague of the boards (a time when every thread eventually disintegrated into a '4Ed good' vs '4Ed bad' discussion) has left many with less to talk about. With the revelation that many things we would want to discuss being scheduled for the abyss, it has left us with fewer concrete matters to rest upon and examine. Of course there are still some long-running threads continuing Elven Netbook, Kara-tur etc. but general discourse has changed since I was here last. Consequently I see a worrying increase in Drizzt threads with about 6 discussions on Drizzt occuring on the font page of People and Places as opposed to the old 2-3 I used to see. Also many discussions have moved away from the plots, intrigues, characters and locales of the setting and onto more elusive concepts such as AO, living FR, 4ed rules, home-brew campaigns and novels. It would appear that in lieu of a stable, continuous setting people have turned to the few things that remain secure - Realms History (as is explored in the long-standing compilation threads)and DRIZZT!! (the only definite thing in 4Ed). The rest of the discussions have focused on speculation and theories about things we have no true understanding of. When the setting was uncompromised, unthreatened we could discuss current events across the Realms - calling upon the vast reservoirs of past history to plot potential new paths for the setting to head - explore the multitude possibilities that could have resulted from a single event - bringing both the past and (assumed)future of the setting together to explore the present. With the future of the setting effectivly lifted from our hands all we have left is the settings rich past. This all results in threads that are merely factual exchanges (historical lore gathering) and unfounded speculation(4ed, Ao etc.). A palpable stagnation of discourse has surfaced that feels less dynamic and organic than previously. Alternativly I may just be completely wrong:) and this may just be a temporary lull. Or perhaps my time away has simply left me abit behind things, rendering me somewhat redundant in discussions. Here's to hoping that whatever is happening, it's temporary. ...and the obligatory:twocents: |
| Stigger12-12-07, 01:30 AM | No, I do think there is at least a grain of truth there. Its an honest question really, what else are we supposed to talk about? We've a very hazy idea of the near-future, hints that the past will be irrelevant, and 3 'super-adventures' that turn out to be pointless in their end result... that's not exactly going to stimulate much in the way of discussion. Kinda hard to get worked up over topics, discussions, or ideas when you know that there really isn't a point to it once 4e hits. Sad, but true from where I'm sitting. |
| Mr_Miscellany12-12-07, 04:25 AM | ...and 3 'super-adventures' that turn out to be pointless in their end result... Speak for yourself. :) Me...well, those super adventures read like they were tailored for my campaign. And as for the 'bigger' picture....well, who knows? Maybe my PCs could prevent Mystra's demise by taking on Cyric himself. Of course if we spent more time talking about each other's campaigns then bellyaching about the in-print Realms, well it'd be a lot more interesting IMNSHO. :P |
| Stigger12-12-07, 05:57 AM | I don't recall ever claiming to speak for anyone but myself... ;) As for speaking of my own campaign... wouldn't do all that many people much good unless they like the idea of merging the WoD with Faerun. Which I kinda doubt is of all that much general interest. |
| Webster12-12-07, 06:28 AM | It's also possible people are interested in 4e, so are discussing FR in 4e on the 4e boards. :) |
| Lord Karsus12-12-07, 09:49 AM | It appears that the 4Ed plague of the boards (a time when every thread eventually disintegrated into a '4Ed good' vs '4Ed bad' discussion) has left many with less to talk about. -4e Derangement Syndrome. It's also possible people are interested in 4e, so are discussing FR in 4e on the 4e boards. :) -Which would have no impact on the "quality" of posts here. |
| DreamStalker12-12-07, 11:05 AM | Most of us seem to be in a waiting phase right now. This shouldn't be too much of a surprise, we are at the end of 3.x and waiting to truly see how 4th really is. So this curiosity turns into speculation and examination of the tidbits and interviews are witnessed to. Personally I am all up for discussing current or past games that everyone is running. Feel free to start up a post and see if anyone can get involved. Or here really. Stigger, you intrigued me with that little tidbit? Care to give a little paragraph or two paraphrasing what you have brought from WoD into FR? I was an avid oWoD player, especially the DA line (V:tDA & DA: ect.). Currently I am preparing to start up a new D&D game and am debating between doing FR (plenty of source books at hand, less work) or doing a homebrew (more work but likely to work better with the pool of players I will have this go). For FR some considerations I have had and am considering: - The players are a band of merchant mercenaries *cough*thieves*cough* along the Golden Way. Adventures will focus early on with strongarming the competition, recovery of wrecked caravans and securing alliances with various notables. - A band of rough and tumble thrill seekers are caught up between the the scheming of the Harpers and the Zhentarim in and near the environs of the Moonsea. Focus on high adventure in varied set ups. Horse chases, Moonsea ship battles, delving wrecked outposts, mountaineering, ect. - In the Silver Marches the heroes find themselves the only ones in a a position to both discover and halt the new threat of the Kir-Lanan threat. Religion and mysticism will play a large part, as well as the rugged uncivilized terrain providing many an excuse for difficulties. Any comments or suggetions for either of those? |
| Stigger12-12-07, 02:13 PM | Funnily, I never got into DA. I know a little bit too much about that particular period of history to ever want to play a game set there. Sorcerer's Crusade was a bit better, but still pretty crap. Beyond that, my group is a bunch of armchair historians, so I never really quite dared to take the plunge for fear of sparking off massive debates. Mostly, the stuff from WoD I brought over are centered around the Fae, a migration across to Faerun with some help from allied Mages, who migrated themselves. Didn't really involve the Fera until recently, but its been a lot of fun figuring out what the Realms Umbra are like. I've pretty much ignored the existance of the Kindred (the Realms has enough problems as it is, and I can't quite bring myself to unleash the Kindred upon it). Really, the Fae are at the centerstage for the campaign, though I've ditched the war between Courts and ignored the existance of the Balor entirely (too complicated with the Wyrm bits), added in a couple of new Houses, and generally ramped up their power level to trump pretty much all but Archmages (Mage version). As for the Mages, its mostly centered around Hollow One Glamour *****s, a few Verbena, and the random Hermes. Dreamspeakers are in the background with the Nunehi over in Maztica (we're playing pre-discovery). Even have a few random Technocracy types, a NWO MiB who decided to live Avalon, and a rogue Iteration X fellow who thinks more like an Artificer than a ItXer. I've been very hesitant to move them over in large numbers, since I think it would probably unbalance against the native wizards too much once you're past a certain point. As far as the Garou are concerned, its only recently that the Bone Gnawer Deserters found the place, who went back and told the rest of the Tribe. So far the only tribes to have come over are the Black Furies, Children of Gaia, and a few Silver Fangs, along with numerous Bone Gnawers. Haven't really had much time to develop this line much, its only been three or four game sessions since they arrived. Sure, its altered the balance of power in the Realms, but its been tremendous fun. Not much darkness in the campaign though, we all pretty much outgrew that a decade ago, so it tends to be a little over the top at times. Think its going to wind down soon though, as its getting a little silly in tone, which is always a sign that its getting time to move on, for us anyway. |
