Is Monsters Of Faerun worth buying? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am still playing by 3 Ed.

Since it is no longer in production, should I buy it before, assuming it will, goes off the shelves in stores or online stores. Or should I just not worry about.

You see I am wondering if it's any good, or if I should put my money into another book?

Should I buy it?

While an interesting read, there are two points against it: 1) it is no longer being printed, and 2) most of its creatures will be re-released in upcoming books (albeit, it may be years before all are out). A better buy would be the FR Player's Guide, due to come out early next year. It will have some of the creatures from the Monsters of Faerun in it AFAIK. Also, various region books coming out will be a good sources for monsters, both new and from the Monsters of Faerun.

What is AFAIK?

and I still play 3.0 isn't the FR player's guide 3.5?

So is it worth my money to buy it, or are the few monsters in it not worth the money?

Would it alter my campaign if I had it and used it an average amount or would it not affect it much?

thanks

As far as I know.

personally, I own the book because I'm a collector of this stuff, and I use it infrequently.

It provides a nuetral Dragon and a nuetral Undead (good for screwing up Smite attempts). Besides those, I've used it once.

I think it's a little overpriced... if you can get it for cheap (50% off) then I'd recommend you buy it.

You're not going to 3.5? Then maybe you should buy it... but only if you want realms specific beasties that you'll be missing out on by not converting.

Most realms products list alternative creatures... so it's not a must.

The "In the Realms" section under each monster is quite nice. I like it just for that alone.

i really liked it.
don't get me wrong, it could have been a LOT better, an dit is a bit overpriced...
but there are some good things in there that i've used pretty often.
and, if you decided to swithc over to 3.5, there really is very little ocnversion work to be done.
one final note, i have seen a few people saying not to buy it, becuase it's going out of print.
that's a simply ludicrous argument.
'don't buy it now, because later on, you own't be able to!'
it's nonsense.
buy it now, BECAUSE it's going out of print.

When I bought the book, it was a toss up between Magic of Faerun or the Monsters.

I went with monsters, but now when I look back I should have gotten the magic one first.

Simply because; as said before all monsters have alternative opions available, or as in CotSQ the monsters are detailed anyway in the appendix. As well as, these days our sessions are more about flavour roleplay than hack-slash. And most of my encounters are other parties of player races. I still feel that is the best encounter, from a challenge point of view and motive.

So if I could suggest: Go with a region book or magic of faerun.

Like yourself I'm not converting now, I've invested to much money (South African Rands don't go very far) in 3 ed. to switch just yet.

Cheers

I think I'll but it.

I have invested too much money to just push those books aside and buy new ones. I have the SRD though.

I have the FRCS, F&P, RoF, and LoD already, probably buy Monster of Faerun, then Magic of Faerun.

How is Magic of Faerun? What's in it I mean.

I would hold off until an updated 3.5 version is out. On the other hand, the beholderkin and shadow dragon entries alone are enough to make it worth it.

People should perhaps read at minimum the first line of the thread starters post...

It doesn't matter that they'll be updated and reprinted in new 3.5 material as he is not going to purchase the 3.5 material.

Magic of Faerūn is an excellent buy! Lots of spells, magical items, some campaign specific presitge classes (i.e. Harper Mage). It also details some of Faerūn's more powerful magics, like the Mythals, and explains Mage Duels and the like.

It's good, and useful. I use it almost as much as I use Lords of Darkness. I need to update the LoD stat-blocks to 3.5 revised edition...

Thanks Herr Doktor, people really should read the first line.

More prestige classes ah? :)
I'll have to get that book too, damn now I really need a job.

<edit> My current character is aspiring to be a Cleric/ Assassin/ Strifleader/ Spur Lord.

No offense, Doktor, but how does the following:

I am still playing by 3 Ed.

Translate into this:

It doesn't matter that they'll be updated and reprinted in new 3.5 material as he is not going to purchase the 3.5 material..

Answer: It doesn't, without *assuming* that when the poster wrote "I am stil playing 3 Ed." he really meant, "I am still playing 3 Ed. and will not be purchasing 3.5." Just a point of clarification.

Now that I understand the original poster: Yes, Monster of Faerun is a very good book. Buy it.

Excepting that in the next post he says:

Which should've made things pretty clear.

Why do you suppose he would mention that he played 3.0 in the first place if it was not actually relevant?

Taking context and assuming is absolutely necessary in online communication. The person is not standing before you so you can't read their tones of body language. You have to assume, if you plan on responding.

To indicate that he hadn't switched to 3.5 yet but was planning on it, that he wondered whether, given that he intended to switch, it would be worthwhile to buy a 3.0 book that might or might not be re-released in 3.5 format.

Surely that is just as valid a reading as yours? I'm not trying to start a flame fest (heck, if I want that, I'll frequent usenet), I just thought the tone of your post seemed...a bit self righteous. My apologies if mine came off the same.

Shade.

Yes it did.

I likewise apologize, I didn't mean to sound that way either. Only that it had been made clear by now what he intended.

JUST TO CLARIFY THIS, I am NOT SWITCHING TO 3.5 FOR A LONG TIME, IF EVER

Thanks for all the help.

Monsters of Faerun is long overdue an update. First and foremost I want one for my 3.5 FR, but I also want to get rid of that Xvim lore. There are no more beasts of Xvim, they are beasts of Bane. (it they exist at all now?) And how about those BaneLiches, did Bane start giving out that info again?
And how about those Tyrantfogs, since Xvim followers turned them all right, but they hunted Baneliches, should not Baneliches turn then real easy now?

Its all small stuff, but I still want it updated.

I was wondering about that too, particularly the relations between Bane and the Baneliches.

Hands down the coolest monster in the whole book. They ride firebreathing ostriches, what's not to like? I've made entire adventures revolving around them. I custom created them in the NWN computer game for my adventures (simply used Lizardman skin and added firebreathing).

I allow my players to play them as well.

I bought it, but I find I almost never use it. The creatures in it are too specific towards an area or group or too out there. I find I haven't used many of them. I have used Crawling Claws, though.
