If you plan on running a Forgotten Realms campaign, it is worth it, otherwise, it is of limited use.
If you are more looking for Mechanics, the Player's Guide to Faerun would probably be a better book, since a majority of the feats and spells from the FRCS were revised and reprinted in the PGtF.

Does a player need both books or just the Player's Guide?

PGtF is basically the 3.5 version of FRCS, but the FRCS has all the dieties and the major ones ideals and planes

PGtF is the 3.5 version for the Crunch (rules) from the FRCS, but for Fluff (Lore), the FRCS is still the book to get.

On a sidenote: While the FRCS is a must-have for FR DMs, you may also have a look at the download section of the main page, where you will find older material on the FR. While this is out of date with the stats given there (e.g., certain NPC would be listed in the way AD&D used to do it), the context about the regions is still very much up to date. Makes a good read if you want to get an impression. So take a look at Cormanthyr, Lands of Intrigue and the like ... which I would suggest to you even if you buy the FRCS.

Well most of the FR books are printed in 3.0

I actually can't live without this FR book 3.5

Champion of Ruin

So with the above book being a great buy...

Champions of Valor should as well...

To me, Champions of Ruin was one of the least useful of the books for 3E FR so far. Especially the Crunch in the book. So many errors, its not even funny. NPCs with partial stats or completely wrong stats, or both. Even the "new" Draegloth race has errors in it for the level advancement. Things are at the wrong values or omitted.
Plus how many times do we need information on the Zhents? We had information on them in the 3E Lords of Darkness, and those of us with 1E and 2E books, have about half a dozen or so with information on them also.

I actually took many feats and other information from that book.

I Agree, if you are looking for rules, etc, then PGtF is the way to go, if you want history and information, FRCS.

Ok, I'm a player, not a DM so I really don't need all the geography lessons anyway. Does PGtF have everything I need to make a character or do I need RoF for that?

Yes, It has everything you need (at bare minimum) to create a character. I am also just a player, and have spent many night reading the history, geography, etc. It helps immerse you in the world. But, I would Highly suggest starting with the PGtF and then, if you enjoy the setting, get the FRCS. :)

Races of Faerun goes into more detail on the different races and cultures. Which the PGtF and the FRCS does not.
