I'm not with you on the "medieval to renaissance" bit. It's more like a progressive world that falls into the dark ages via an apocalypse, which is the total opposite of a renaissance (a "rebirth"). |
| GothicDan09-28-07, 09:25 PM | It's just becoming the World of Darkness. Which isn't bad in and of itself - I love Mage, and like Werewolf a lot, and like Vampire. But it's not FR. |
| MarkusTay6309-28-07, 09:31 PM | If it's dark, then its like WoD, or any of another dozen or more settings set in a post-apocalyptic world. If it's dark and grimey, then it will be more like Warhammer. Just add some Eberronese-stye magi-tech to power the tanks and gunnes, and thats what we will end up with. Don't get me wrong, WH is an incredibly well-detailed and original world, and it does well as a setting for Army combat (I have Wood Elves believe it or not). It would probably make a good RP world as well, but I've never played the WH RPG rules because they are NOT D20, which detracts heavily from their useability, at least in my case. And just in case anyone doesn't believe I would have an Elven army, here's a piccy of my Waywatcher - it's just a WIP so don't be too critical (someday I'll finish him). http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/MarkusTay/Waywatcher.jpg |
| Flecha09-29-07, 06:21 AM | Nice mini, Markus! For the record, I play with Bretonnia. I'm not with you on the "medieval to renaissance" bit. It's more like a progressive world that falls into the dark ages via an apocalypse, which is the total opposite of a renaissance (a "rebirth"). OK, yes, you're right. I love the Warhammer setting, but the fun of it is the difference between the settings. I mean, I love FR by itslef, and Warhammer by itself, and both because let me play different things in a common Medieval Fantasy. If they turn FR into Warhammer, that's pretty bad. If they turn into that overvalued filth that is the dreaded WoD, that'll be plainly stupid. But if they include magitech... well, that'd be anit-FR and we, the fans, should do something *hard*... I feel rebellious (like, against the Empire)... :plotting: |

Actually what it says is Sages in centuries to come mark the Weave's destruction in the Year of Blue Fire as the end of the old world, and the terrible beginning of the new. |
| Flecha09-29-07, 07:53 AM | Actually what it says is Sages in centuries to come mark the Weave's destruction in the Year of Blue Fire as the end of the old world, and the terrible beginning of the new. Well, I didn't want to quote the book directly, because I'm not sure we really can do it... ;) Anyway, mine was an interpretation; it's what the words "old world" and "new", brought to my mind. I assumed an advancement akin to that of Earth, and voilá. But as Rinonalyrna wisely pointed out, it's going to be more lika a Dark Ages. Well, I hope so, instead some magi-tech thingy... |
| mortellan09-29-07, 01:26 PM | The designers' new take on cosmology especially the abyss reminds me of Warhammer's Chaos (and 40k's Eye of Terror). |
| MarkusTay6309-29-07, 01:52 PM | Its Warhammer meets World of Darkness meets Warcraft. It's the WWW, starring the CCC... |
| Suin Bahhar09-29-07, 03:20 PM | Aye, I could live with that. :P |
| Suin Bahhar09-29-07, 03:21 PM | Nightmare Renaissance sounds like Ravenloft to me. |
| 1 ton ghost09-29-07, 03:38 PM | it's a marketing term and not necessarilly a good one at that. these are designed to entice and whet your whistle. that is, seperate you from your $. it's a business 1st, then a game/social circle (geek culture is big $ these days) then an art. 21st century pop-culture thrives on buzz words. there's a science to words now and it's scary the concoctions made to get your cash and sell something. when you see a new moniker describing something you might be interested in, and helps drive consumer attention and encourages commerce. things like "survival horror" (look at the RE franchise now) "bling" (wtf, really? wasn't it jewelry for hundreds of years?) "cyberpunk" (neuromancer kicked off bladerunner/matrix/etc.) worst offender "feel good movie of the year" which often means terribly PC, kiddie-friendly, and lacking originality |

If its like Warhammer then 4e will ROCK! Psionics will be awesome. You'll be able to do super powerful stuff but will risk the chance of attack by daemons. |

| Kid SixXx10-02-07, 06:28 PM | If it's dark, then its like WoD, or any of another dozen or more settings set in a post-apocalyptic world. Heh, I play in a Vampire: The Requiem campaign every third weekend of the month and Chicago looks just fine... but not for long if the Invictus stays in charge. There's no Mad Max rushing about for gazzzoline in the WoD, at least not in the Vampire themed game. |
| 1 ton ghost10-03-07, 03:43 AM | it's not necessarilly post-apocaplyptic. some sections will be which is basically the same format of the Mournlands in Eberron i think. they won't completely redo the format, that's far too liberal and alot of veteran gamers will resent such massive change on such a large scale. it's just good business and 30+yrs. of records/thinking. geographically, little pockets here and there might be affected, but apart from the Spellplague i can't see monumental transition. each edition has been defined by a signature big ass historical event. 2nd ed's was just the Avatar Crisis (ToT) and FRCS kicks off a ton in 1372DR start. and Faerun is quite large. many possibilities. it's like a rare gem on TV, fresh but broad enough writing to afford many plots, etc.(x-files, quantum leap, etc). -anauroch is a wasteland like Dune -might exploit flavor of dead/wild magic zone. always a popular plot hook (it's anything can happen day given "magical phenomenon" between zone 'a' and another independent, often, magic variable. shadow/norm weave frictions, whatever. -necropoli; barrowfield, battle of bones, old temples from, ahem, forgotten realms and recently devestated cultures. look at Thay's current schism but, really, this is all speculation and all you can do is wait till release. i know that sucks to hear, but consider the possibility of Gencon '08 and winning free 4th Ed. crap. not a good concession, but for what it's worth. |
