My replly in thread concerning Nether Scrolls made me wonder about PC's and Item Creation Feats. Specifically: Do they take them or are they just to be used by NPC's.

So my question to you all is:

Do you take Item Creation Feats when leveling up? And I'm interested in a reason why you take or don't take them.

most of my PCs in my game dont take item creation feats cuz they dont want to spend their EXP on other players.

If the Crafter and someone working with him agree, someone else can pay the XP cost. In theory even someone that is doing nothing in the process of crafting the item other then paying the xp cost could do it.

After this I had to ask: How does your players gain their magic items?

Most likely as loot or from places like Thayan Enclaves is my guess.

Or find an Artificer and commision something to be made.

Myself if I take creation feats, I take Weapons/Armor and Wondrous Items.

My players go about half and half.

Half will never take an item creation feat and simply go with whatever magic they can find, buy or steal. Half take the item creation feats to either make the 'common' magic items they want, or to make custom items(using 'new' spells, for example.). If the player have a big, long term goal..they are much more likely to take item creation feats. In order to do some big goals, you'll need magic items(to at least help). The best way to get a magic item is to simply make it yourself.

That was my guess, but loot might not allways give you what you need and Thayan Enclaves don't make anything that's worth more than 2.000gp (which mean only +1 armor, +1 weapon, potions and minor wondrous items).

And finding an Artificer and commisioning something to be made can eventually take more time and cost more money than it's worth.

Myself if I take creation feats, I take Weapons/Armor and Wondrous Items.
Exactly. I usually take Wondrous Items myself [sometimes I even take Magical Artisan for them]. As for other feats I might take Weapons/Armor or Rings.

It's more or less like Bloodtide said: If you want Item you need, when you need it - craft it yourself.

haha my players make nothing... purchase a little here or there (no one has bought anything bigger than a Hewards Handy Haversack)... and find the rest in loot... they are THAT greedy with EXP. The Wizard/Cleric in the party has decided he will wait til 24th level before he decides to take a creation feat.

Greed makes the world go around i guess

Craft Wondrous and Arms/Armor make a character "the last one to be killed" (if the party depends too much on your crafted magic items, they'll fight to save your life every time it's needed, and that just with only 2 feats :D)

Generally speaking, if I'm playing a Wizard or Cleric, I'll take one or two. Typically just Scribe Scroll (which is free for wizards anyway) and Craft Wondrous Item though - most magical weapons/armor me and my party get come from looting and purchase.

And the group I DM for relies entirely on looting, thievery, and the rare purchase for thier items (they highly favor thievery over spending thier precious gold on anything :P ).

I'll take Item Creation feats if I'm playing a wizard, but not a sorcerer. I've found that it rarely makes sense for a sorcerer to make magic items using his own spells (as opposed to found/purchased scrolls) as you're basically burning a "spell known". Wizards on the other hand, have a variety of spells availble, but limited range during an adventure, so having extra magic items to expand your flexibility is well worth the cost.

My favorite all-time character is my 15th level cleric of Gond. ALL of his feats are item creation except for Skill Focus Craft (weaponsmithing).

Parties love a walking healing potion who also makes them magic weapons.

I often take item creation feats, unfortunately most DM's won't accomodate the actual creation even when they assure me they will. Has anyone out there run into the same problem? How did you handle it, as I could use an extra feat if that one is just going to sit there taking up space? Not to hijack the thread, but I wondered if anyone out there had troubles with DM's not allowing them to use the associated creation feats, but refusing to let them replace them.

I would only take Craft Wondrous Item. I don't like making items that are naught but simple batteries. And Scribe Scroll, of course, but I'd play a Wizard anyway.

well, for items that can be used by the entire party (so... EVERY item  ) why not share all xp? we do this always (like the curing gems :))
