Hello, I'm currently playing a character who came from the Kozakura Islands (Shinkoku, to be exact) and was wondering if anyone could answer me what the Japanese language of the Realms would be.

High Shou is Chinese, I believe. I'm basically searching for the name of the Japanese language.

Can anyone help with this?

Kozakuran. The languages of Kara-Tur are:

Kara-Tur: Trade Tongue
Ama Basin: Pazruki and Issacortae
Shou Lung, Ra-Khati, & Khazari: Kao te Shou/High Shou
T'u Lung: T'u Lung
Kozakura: Kozakuran
Koryo: Koryo
Wa: Wa-an

This is from Tom Costa's "Speaking in Tongues" from Dragon Annual 4. If you don't have the Kara-Tur product itself, you can get it easily (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=1356&).

Tom Costa's article is a must for bringing life to the languages of the FR. I used that article all the time whenever I had an FR game running.

I used to advertise that article often on these boards, I am glad to see others spreading the word about it still.

With the new simplified languages that the FRCS uses, you might cut some of the languages. I can see Shou Lung, Ra-Khati, Khazari and T'u Lung using Kao te Shou while Kozakura and Wa would share the same language (although I don't know what it would be called) since most of these nations are the same culture just set in different time periods, Earth-wise. I also remember another language called Han, Hang or maybe Huang (forgot the name) that was mentioned in the Kara-Tur boxed set.

You also shouldn't forget that your character might have learned other oriental nonhuman languages from Kara-Tur. Using non-Rokugan OA, he might know bakemono, buso, draconic, dwarven, giant, hengeyokai, kappa, spirit tongue, tasloi, tengu, vanara, yeti and/or yuan-ti.

So, Wa-an is Japanese with an Edo dialect, and Kozakura is Japanese with a Kyoto dialect. Right?

I always thought Kozakuran covered both Kozakura & Wa. Could be wrong, been a while since I dusted off my Kara-Tur stuff (man, I wish they had used that setting instead of Rokugan).
