For those playing in 3E, it's a fascinating supplement to the 2001 FRCS, a more concise introduction that gives you a more concentrated sense of the core feel of the Realms before the process of being added to, mixed up, and developed in different directions by TSR and Wizards of the Coast. (As well as some material that's in no other source.) The 1990s were when, especially toward the end of the decade, the main areas of the Realms had received basic coverage and the real depth began to emerge with the Volo's Guides on one hand and the FOR supplements on the other. This material is essential for everyone who wants to immerse their campaigns in the detail of the Realms, rather than use one of the introductory setting works as a basic campaign starting point. |
