Some one from the boards here wrote in to Dragon and they are looking for anyone who want's updates to these settings to write in.

If enough people write in then maybe they will update those settings or print articles for them.

Just a heads up!

scalemail@paizo.com. They request that you supply your name, city, and state as well.

What a great idea! Everyone send an email to paizo at the link above, and tell them if you would like to see. You might mention which campaign settings you most want to see updated, and you might mention to them the kind of articles or subjects you would most like to read about.

I think Paizo is doing a fantastic job of updating Dragon and Dungeon magazines and I hope it will pay off for them in wonderful sales.

Just e-mailed my support. If it was up to me I'd have an article on a campaign setting in each issue of Dragon but thankfully its not, otherwise I probably would have killed the magazine.

PS Kuje, you forgot to mention the Horde but everyone seems to forget about that empty land that shook the world. ;)

Actually I didn't.... the reply in Dragon just said don't bother writing in about the Horde because it'll never be updated. :)

For that matter, The Horde is available for free download, and it's fairly light on the cruncy bits anyway.

I certainly haven't forgotten the Hordelands, but they had less in the way of mechanics in need of conversion...

Meh.

From what I hear, AEG is publishing the last of the dual-stat Rokugan product this year, and will be focusing on promoting their 3rd Edition L5R game with their in-house system, Roll-n-Keep.

If WotC is a bit of a gambler -- Hey, I've seen them trying to introduced Illumians in Races of Destiny, albeit doesn't mean they're good gamblers -- They should start promoting their own OA using Kara-Tur setting to pick up the void.

Oh, can I say once again, it was a bad business move on WotC's part to include Rokugan instead of Kara-Tur in their new OA book? Can I? :smirk:

Yep. That was my letter, now that my given name is out. I posted over under 'People and Places' the other day (a little late). I had the magazine for a couple of days and finally sat down to read the letters, and lo and behold.

It's too bad they won't touch the Horde, I think it has a potential for updating rather than a casual mention in the FR core book- besides I'd love to see the Shatjan updated for 3E- reindeer people that have breath weapons...wow.

I concur that using Rokugan as the default setting for OA was a bad idea, since they already made an Lo5R RPG, 2 on the market is just clutter on the shelves.
For a Kara-Tur article, all they'd really have to do is give a small map for each of the 10 regions, showing where the capitals are, sites of interest, a sidebar showing what classes from the OA book are suitable to each region, and most importantly, world information on what's going on where- remember, the boxed set came out in 1988, so that's a lot of years to catch up on.
Maztica was not too long after that, and what's happening over there? Does Amn still occupy the continent? There's also all kinds of cool monsters, dragons included, that need to be updated as well. Their magic system works differently, so that needs to be adressed, and a write-up on the City of Gold would be cool too, since there was originally a full adventure published on it- that could be updated in the corresponding Dungeon issue.
Test of the Samurai and Ronin's Challenge could be updated in Dungeon as well.
Anyway, it's great to see that people are sending in their support, let's fill up their mailbox with the requests, folks! You guys rock!

I really do hope a 3rd party does this, you have my vote.

Because from the looks of things, those bastard Forgotten Realms employees ain't doing crap with those settings ever again. I say they need to make those 3 realms regional books just like they're doing now.

Don't forget the Hordelands too.

After they're done with all the regional books for Faerun, they need to make just 4 more regional books, same size and material: The Eastern Realms: Kara-Tur, The Land of Fate: Zhakara, The New World: Maztica, The Endless Wastes.

Done. Final.

But no...they never listen to us and they're never going to. WotC would rather base these possible products on sales almost 20 years ago than even glance at such projects. They don't give a damn on anything new at all, I thought young bloods were employed at WotC now? If they were young enough they wouldn't know Kara-Tur from a tea cup and need to take these old material and rennovate them once again.

My rant is done...it might be when I'm old and gray without the benefit of Timeless Body before a Kara-Tur, Zakhara, Maztica and Hordelands supplement ever comes
Moscone

02-21-05, 03:51 AM
wow. bitter. so did you e-mail Paizo then? They'd already said in the magazine that Horde won't be touched. You do have a point, it's being based on sales from 20 years ago. I think these settings would do well from a sales standpoint today, if formatted like the other Realms "worldbooks", as opposed to the chaotic way TSR did things back in the day. I mean, Kara-Tur was written by like 9 writers!! Each region had its own format that left you scratching your head going "whaaa??" and rather than presenting 2 books of concise information, a lot of it was written like riddles and allegories, and bounced from one topic to another from one paragraph to the next, leaving the DM to basically make up most of his own stuff. Now, Wizards is making things informative, and that's the formula to making them into winning products.
Monsoon28

02-21-05, 05:21 AM
Not to nitpick, but 20 years ago these settings didn't exist yet, at least wait until 2008 before you start using the big 2-0. 15 to 17 years ago is more like it and that's just for Kara-Tur all the others were released in the early '90's.
Moscone

02-21-05, 05:39 AM
Actually.... Kara-Tur existed much earlier than 20 years ago, in 1st Edition actually, though not in its current form. However, 17 years agao is close enough as things were still pretty much as they were 3 years previous (I'm an 80s kid myself). The point is though, it's a different generation that's jumped onto DnD now. Different things had an effect on our outlook than the kids that are playing DnD today. It could be a number of factors that differ in these different outlooks: I was a headbanger with long hair, a leather jacket and listened to Motley Crue, while today's kids wear big baggy jeans with chains and listen to Eminem. Not the world's best example, I know, but what flew with us back in the late 80s won't fly today. In the case of DnD, it needs to be reformatted with the times.

Only the backstory and fluff part of the original OA book (the Kara-Tur chapter) and the boxed set. David "Zeb" Cook did a good job, making the region seem real enough to imagine.

I would love an updated Kara-Tur. Maybe with Rokugan leaving the picture, this would be a good time for an Oriental Adventures 3.5 using Kara-Tur as the default this time.

The sad thing about the old marketing for Kara-Tur was that several modules were great (I'll never forget playing as a samurai throught Mad Monkey vs. Dragon Claw), but the actual boxed set had less interesting fluff than the modules did.

While we're on this topic, how does everyone take the reference in "The Crucible" that Mystra more or less implies that the gods of Faerun are the same gods in Kara-Tur with different appearances and names. Before some of you purists groan, it might go a long way to consolidating Kara-Tur as a part of the Realms and a marketable setting.
Moscone

02-21-05, 11:41 PM
Actually, they are their own gods. In the boxed set they stated that the worship of Chauntea was outlawed in Wa.

To be honest, I want Zakhara too, however, Dragon's already begun doing Al-Qadim starting with PrCs, which usually means there's more to come. We got a smaller teaser on Kara-Tur and Maztica with the Classic Campaigns issue. I guess I should have mentioned Al-Qadim in my letter to Dragon. Why don't you e-mail them and ask for more Zakhara? The more e-mails they get from different people the more they sit up and take notice ;)

Well I was reading the latest issue of Dragon last night, and as I was perusing the letters column, one of them sounded kinda familiar to me...

As I turned the page my jaw dropped in surprise as I saw my own name at the bottom of the letter I was reading!

Based on Kuje's prompt in this thread a couple months ago, I dutifully wrote in to Dragon Magazine to chime in my support for them publishing more articles on Kara-Tur & Zakhara.

I was just advocating for a couple of great campaign settings. I didn't realize they would actually print my letter!

So anyway, that made my night. :cloud9:

You can check it out in the latest Dragon #330 with the Mind Flayer on the cover. Not only is the letters column extra-good this month but the whole magazine is a lot of fun, with all the Far Realms stuff and the Ecology of the Chul and the Jester prestige class.

By the way, Erik Mona responded that the Classic Campaigns issue they did sold well enough that they intend on doing another later this year and plan to make it an annual thing! Yaaay Erik Mona! :D

I read your letter too, way to go Gray! Someone else wrote in with the same sentiment as well. Could be someone else from these boards. Great to see they're gonna do something now. Even if it is annually, but it is something. Hope they print some more responses on the subject. Keep writing in, they'll print it. I've had mine printed in #328 and #316, 2 mags in a year! Keep the mail flowing in. :)

Excellent! <with Mr. Burns' voice and rubs hands together>. Hopefully a lot more people sent in responses too, and one letters column will be flooded with requests for it. Isn't it an ego boost to see your name in Dragon? :)

<thinks> if they're worried the books won't sell that much, why not just release 3.5 updates to them as pdf on a disc or for download and sell those? Still costs money, but not as much as printing up on paper.
Jonathan Strange

03-30-05, 05:28 AM
I agree with you all. Kara-Tur needs it's own book and a purge of all that Rogukon crap or whatever it's called. I'm dying to take my players back to Kara-Tur. As far a Maztica and all that, I think it would add greatly to Dragon. No Horde huh? Can't say I remember much about it from the old days. It did seem rather bland compared to the two settings on either side of it but I never really read up on it.
Moscone

03-30-05, 06:39 AM
It's too bad there's no plans to revisit the Horde. Even though the Tuigan are no longer the threat they once were, the old adage goes it's only as exciting as you make it- or something like that.
Cole Deschain

Heck, the Tuigan are easy to bring back as a major force.

They just nead the right leader... and enough time to forget the beating they suffered once they overextended last time.

I don't get it, why won't they update the Hordelands?

It's inbetween Faerun and Kara-Tur, it's what has seprated the two cultures from clashing into a melting pot. You mean they'll do Faerun and Kara-Tur and just simply leave a void in the middle? I doubt that.

The writers of Forgotten Realms have been writing books on certain regions. One of the optional regions in the FRCS is the Hordelands, in fact, and they gave it somewhat of a slight description of it in the FRCS in fact (and a few other books such as Unnapproachable East).

I'm sure they'll get around to writing a book on the Endless Wastes, sort of an opening before releasing the Kara-Tur book?

I'm gonna take this to the "Ask Richard Baker" thread. It's been brought up before (and he also said no Hordelands, though I don't understand why), but I'm gonna ask him if there are any really good reasons not to.
Ranger REG

04-01-05, 03:08 AM
Because, the majority of FR fans are Faerun-fanatic, and they all live in the continental 48 states.

I don't get it, why won't they update the Hordelands?

Lack of sales potential, lack of content (Endless Waste pretty much describes it), lack of artistic interest, lack of time (more profit in other settings), lack of imagination....to give people that say stuff like Because, the majority of FR fans are Faerun-fanatic, and they all live in the continental 48 states. an actual reason to say it;) choose one or all :D If they won't update it seperately, they could just give it a chapter in a Kara-Tur update tho'.
Moscone

04-02-05, 10:26 PM
In the Kara-Tur Boxed set, the Endless Waste is actually described as one of the nations of Kara-Tur, only as the Plain of Horses. If any official material is going to be printed outside of Dragon, it'll probably be written up as that rather than the Endless Waste. The Horde Boxed Set described the region in a really interesting way, rather than it being an essay on the Mongols adapted to DnD.
If you're interested in running it in your campaign, then mine Disney's Mulan for ideas. Haven't seen the sequel yet, are there any ideas to be found in that one?
I know when I was running a group of players through Zakhara for a while, my players were wondering where I kept coming up with all these cool ideas. I told them years afterward that they were pretty well re-enacting the weekly Aladdin series (I never told them at the time and they couldn't be bothered with watching juvenile little Disney cartoons). ;)
