| avian tiefling07-22-03, 02:08 PM | what's the best way to get past a mind flayer's psionic blasts and beat it to a bloody pulp? all i can remember is a sweet +5 2-handed sword i found in BGII: ToB. aside from that, what are the best strategies? |

Fan out so it only get's one of you a round, flank it, shoot it from range...drop a hand grenade, you know the usual... have a fighter ready an action to hit it when it tries to do it, and hope it fails the concentration check. |
| tauster07-22-03, 05:03 PM | another problem fighting flayers (at least to me; i´m sure it´s been discussed earlier. sorry for that!): how do you cope with their planeshift- ability? i still play&dm 2nd ed so i do not really know what´s changed in 3e... in "ye olde times" they could planeshift at will; supposed they do no want to eat your brain while fighting (flayers are quite intelligent- eating while facing a threat seems pretty stupid to me), their best strategy should be 1) surprise their enemy 2) mind blast them 3) grab the nearest person 4) planeshift to the astral and take that victim out without having to bother with the other pc. as far as i know their planeshift is pretty inaccurate (you end up on the other plane some feet in a random direction) so it´s used best to get out of a fight to the astral and not back into that fight, but if a party is faced more than one flayer and have no good praparation (see 1) )... they should be in a mess... my players favourite way to deal with dangerous creatures often is throwing some flammables (lamp oil or alcohol), ignite the drenched enemies and sometimes using a dust devil (lowlevel- spell) to kindle the flames. shoul work on flayers too. :smirk: tauster |
| Xae'an07-22-03, 08:30 PM | They can still planeshift at will and drag off opponents because they usually don't have lunch time while fighting - you don't have to change anything. By now my players know that they have to be prepared when fighting ilithids - once I had to let a friendly NPC interfere to keep them from getting eaten by a mindflayer... |
| optimus prime07-23-03, 12:19 AM | Harkle and Bella Harpell had a rather funny and unique way to kill Illithids in Siege of Darkness, if you've read it. http://boards.wizards.com/rpg/avatars/Transformers-Optimus.gif |
| tauster07-23-03, 03:33 AM | o.p.: i read id, although i do not remember what book it was... :D unfortunately my players read it too so it would be nothing new if i´d used that idea in an actual battle. too bad- i´d be quite funny! |
| Arandar07-23-03, 06:13 AM | optomus prime, my thoughts were also on that book and that spell when I started reading this thread :) it's a cool way to do it. |
