| Mulan Rogue01-04-06, 06:34 PM | Where abouts are the places young aspiring mages go to learn the art? I know of the ones in Silverymoon and suspect theres a few in places like Waterdeep, Thay and such, but where else? What of famous mages or teachers in the realms? How about Sorcerors, Wu-jen, bards and the like? Wheres Hogwarts? |
| Old Sage01-04-06, 06:59 PM | A partial listing of the more popular cities that contain mageguilds/schools - Waterdeep Almravien Calimport Volothamp Keltar Memnon Silverymoon Cimbar Raven's Bluff Suzail Neverwinter Mulmaster Lyrabar Deepearth Keczulla Murann Messemprar Daggerford Taltemplar Everaska Menzoberranzan Arabel Westgate Luskan |
| Mulan Rogue01-04-06, 07:14 PM | Dang! Lots! Where can I find the details about these schools? I am particularly enticed to learn more about the West gate school, my current game is very associated with the vamps of that city and the influence they have over it, is there an article on the school somewhere? |
| GothicDan01-04-06, 07:15 PM | I believe Evermeet does, as well. And certainly the two main cities of Halruaa (the current capital and the former, both of which names escape me - Halarrah? and something?) would certainly have mage schools/guilds, as well. None of the known schools in the Realms train Wu-jen or Warmages, because they don't (as of canon) exist there yet. Well Wu-jen might migrate there, but they would originate in Kara-Tur, so that's where you'd find schools. As for Sorcerers, by definition, they are loose and have no hierarchy, so the idea of a School of Sorcerery would be a bit weird. The closest I can think of are the Simbul's special apprentices, who form a loose affiliation in Aglarond; since she's a Sorcerer primarily, I would imagine they are, too. By far and large, Wizards hold the greatest share of power and tradition in the Realms, due to their spell versatility. |
| Mulan Rogue01-04-06, 07:34 PM | My main reason for asking is I have a player with a half drow (first level wizard) looking to write a backstory based around the city of Westgate and how he may have come to learn his trade. The other reason is I plan on doing a mage acadamy series of linked adventures in a Harry Potter vein (but realmsy) at some point this year. I need a well known and detailed school to set this in. I have another (off topic) question, how do half drow age? I understand they come of age (considered a fully grown adult) at 20 years old? The player wishes to be a young half drow adolesant, therefore 20 would equal the human age of 15-16, yes? |
| Old Sage01-04-06, 07:35 PM | I believe Evermeet does, as well.Aye... Taltemplar as I mentioned previously. And certainly the two main cities of Halruaa (the current capital and the former, both of which names escape me - Halarrah? and something?) would certainly have mage schools/guilds, as well. The Gathering of Magicians. 'Tis a school for mages and is located in Heldapan. |
| Old Sage01-04-06, 07:40 PM | Where can I find the details about these schools? You can find most of the details regarding these schools and guilds in the regional sourcebooks that deal with each of the cities in question -- either in 2e or 3e. |
| Mulan Rogue01-04-06, 07:46 PM | I have only the 3rd ed and 3.5 books for the FR setting, where can I get hold of 2nd edition material, is it still relevant? |
| Old Sage01-04-06, 11:53 PM | As long as the 2e details haven't been updated to 3e... they are still largely relevant. You can find free FR 2e sourcebooks available for download here at WotC:- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads And you can download PDF versions of the other 2e FR sourcebooks not collected onto that URL at paizo.com and RPGNow.com for $4-$5 respectively. Nobleknight.com and dragontrove.com offer a selection of printed copies of 2e sourcebooks as well... |
| Lord Karsus01-05-06, 01:21 AM | Tanthulthar (The City of Shade) is also an excellent place to learn magic. It might not be too relevant to your character, but it is another place. |
| JaiaDrottsingr01-07-06, 05:49 PM | Menzoberranzan Arach- Tithnil and Sorcere, NOT POPULAR DUUH! Oh and mulan Rogue is spelled Moulin Rouge |
| Old Sage01-07-06, 08:06 PM | Arach- Tithnil and Sorcere, NOT POPULAR DUUH!They may not be popular to people just starting out in the Realms. Oh and mulan Rogue is spelled Moulin RougePerhaps you should consider that the username is actually referring to a "mulan rogue" -- a mulan from Thay who is a rogue. |
| Blackheart01-07-06, 08:06 PM | Not much has been printed on Westgate in 3/3.5, really, or that I've seen. My 2nd Edition Realms collection is too lacking to point you anywhere other than Adventures, which is a nice-to-have, in my opinion, for any DM of the Realms. Westgate gets a 2 page writeup in that one. As an aside, I think Mulan Rogue is clever, and it's too bad some don't 'get' it. |

| Mulan Rogue01-08-06, 02:21 AM | Oh and mulan Rogue is spelled Moulin Rouge perhaps it's a big 'play on words' you know, like a kind of pun, with multiple meanings.... <ROLLEYESATTHEFRIGGINGTARDGOESHERE> |

Cloak and Dagger contains more details on Westgate as an appendix(~10 pages). Skimming it, I can't see any schools in Westgate, although Tersonm(LN human male Wiz19) does tutor students apparently. |
