So far as I know, there is next to nil info on Lantan. And 'tis a shame, because I should like to know more about it, meself.

For gnome (and halfling) lore, don't miss "The Adventures of Volo: Hin Nobody Knows" in Dragon #269.

Although there is some in-print support for a gnome-Lantan connection, I firmly classify that as garbage. (How's that for reasoning?) Lantan was conceived as an edge-of-map land of fable, so it's fitting there's no detailed coverage.

But there has been at least one Lantanna character pop up in the novels... So we have characters from a land that has no official write-up.

Some of us would really like to see Lantan detailed. Another one of the "edge-of-the-map" areas that I'd like to see detailed is Nimbral.

Call it my sick sense of humor, I’m about to stick “Mt Nevermind” on Lantan.

Oh gods, no.... I like the tinker gnomes, but only as fluff. I don't know if the Lantanna could deal with the sheer destructive capabilities of a bunch of tinker gnomes...

I'm with you on this, but IMHO, Gond worshiping Gnomes are little better then tinker gnomes. It can also be argued that Gond worshiping Gnomes were influenced, either intentionally or as D&D group consciousness changed, by the tinker gnomes.
Lets not highjack the thread to debate that.

Actually, I would tone them down a bit(ok, alot), and give it another name.
For haveing little on the way of true info Lantan and thier Gnomes, seeing that some people do not even believe that Gnomes exist, I see no probloum with using inperation from another sorce.

I really appreciate the responses, and now have several more questions.

1. What are tinker gnomes? And why are they good for only fluff?

2. What is Mt. Nevermind?

3. Where does the information about Lantan at Candlekeep come from?

Thanks for your help and information. FYI many of the links are now defunct.

1) Tinker gnomes are from the Dragonlance setting. They are well gnomes that make machines or other strange things that hardly ever work. If you hear a tinker gnome go "oops." then you run as fast as possible and as far away as possible.

They also have extremely long names and
theytalklikethisanditisarealpaintoread. :)

2) Again is from Dragonlance and it is where the gnomes live or did live. At one time a dragon had taken over the mountain.

3) no idea. :) And this is the link you want. It's not defunct but you just have to take a round about way to get to it.

I think it was one of the Spelljammer sourcebooks that said that a tinker gnome, working full-tilt, could produce something dangerous overnight, and that having tinker gnomes in your area would dramatically decrease property values.

Tinker gnomes are obsessed with technology, and no matter what you have, they've got to find a way to make it better. A good example is their homeland, Mt. Nevermind. Rather than use "outmoded" stairs to move about, they either catapult themselves up to a level ("gnomeflingers") or, if going down, jump off and hope that the net on the level they're going to properly deploys...

A tinker gnome's greatest love is to invent things. A tinker gnome's only natural enemy is its own inventions, or the inventions of other tinker gnomes.

Tinker gnomes are fun to read about, and I imagine they'd be fun to watch (from a safe distance). But the only possible uses I could see for them in a campaign is comic relief or random destruction. Hence, my statement that they are better as fluff.

3. It's an unofficial writeup developed and extrapolated from the description of Lantan in the 1987 and 1993 campaign sets, plus the most detailed maps, such as in the Forgotten Realms Atlas.

I actually e-mailed them with that same question. Here's the answer I received, a direct cut-and-paste:

to answer your question the info is not WotC, home-brew from candlekeep

Mmm-hmm. "homebrew from Candlekeep" except for the parts they directly lifted from http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2566/ without bothering to check and see if they were canon or homebrew first. Wonderful attention to detail, those guys.

Know you for certain that they did that?

It could be that the creator of the linked site either created that info for Candlekeep and then posted it on their own site, or it could be that the person who submitted the info to them lifted it without saying where they got it...

Oh, I'm pretty certain of wherefore and which I speak of. Probably has something to do with the fact that the link in my message above and the link in my .sig below are one and the same. ;)

EDIT: I was in a bit of a foul mood when I first posted this. Lets try it again, with a bit of self-moderating:

I don't mind at all folks adapting my work or posting it to their own websites, but doing it and then claiming it as their own "homebrew" is extremely annoying. And all too common on the Internet, IMO.
