| Interested205-04-05, 07:24 PM | I know, I know - this may be kinda cliche, but I'm currently playing in a party of 5 level 15 characters, and we're in Faerun. Currently, we're looking for a good challenge with lots of treasure. Hellgate Keep (or rather, the ruins of) comes to mind, but I was wondering if any of you had other ideas - I'm not hugely familiar with Faerun as I haven't gotten around to reading all my books cover-to-cover yet. One of the guys is an Illithid Slayer, so maybe a Mind Flayer city? Ideas? |
| Jon-Rigel05-04-05, 07:53 PM | I'm curious. Aside from the Illithid Slayer, what are the four other classes in your party? As for interesting challenges. Since reading one of the initial Drizzt books in which he and Guenwyvar mounted a direct assault on a greater brain--or elder brain, the correct term eludes me at the moment--I've wanted to spy on an Illithid enclave in the Underdark, then Greater Teleport (watch that Spellcraft check due to the Faerzress effect) into the chamber of the and nuke the bejeezus out of it. Imagine the psychic backlass those Mind Flayers would endure if you killed their leader brain! What does your Illithid Slayer companion think of this? S/he no doubt has the lore to tell you what countermeasures you need to prepare before engaging the Mindflayers. And in my experience (though, this might just be a result of my particular DM), they always have great treasure. |

The only reason Drizzt could kill one was because he has the power of being a novel character. |
| Interested205-04-05, 08:16 PM | We have a Rogue/Sorcerer/Suel Archanamanch, a straight Wizard, a Fighter/Barbarian, and a straight Monk in addition to the Illithid Slayer. I'm sure the Slayer companion would be fine with it, except for the whole CR 25 deal...not sure we could take it. On the other hand, the Slayer is a Ranger/Psion/Illithid Slayer combo, so it's pretty insane against mind flayers and their kin. I was thinking we could raid the Raval Spire and Hellgate Dell, and then try to take on Morueme's Cave (FIVE blue dragons, but at least half a million gold in treasure). Then use the gear from that to mount an expedition to Lagurno. Sound good? |
| The Darkone05-05-05, 02:31 AM | The Blue's of clan Moureme were supposed to have had acess to the Nether Scrolls if my memory serves me write, so be careful. Also don't forget that they have their own personnel army of hobgoblins. |
| Silverpanther05-05-05, 03:57 AM | right, head to the underdark :D there is enough dead for all of your party :evillaugh maybe you face them with that two mind flayer sorcerers, their loyal inquisition and grimlock (barbarian) minions, who are trying to enslave and control that drow patrol that is just hunting this kuo-toa tribe for sport :plotting: possibilities are ENDLESS down there, so if your players start to get bored get the underdark box |
| WizO_BigSister05-05-05, 06:00 AM | *Dons traffic directors uniform* Steering this thread over to the correct forum :) Please check out the Forum Organisation ~ What Goes Where (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=172646) thread. Thanks  |
| Interested205-05-05, 06:46 AM | My apologies...should I post a new thread in general? |
| WizO_BigSister05-05-05, 06:49 AM | Grrrrrr - the boards crashed for me after I posted that and before I was able to move this. Cross your fingers ... this time it might work :P |
| Interested205-05-05, 07:08 AM | Thanks :) |
| The Gunslinger05-05-05, 02:49 PM | I wouldn't get into the mindset of PC's always being able to take out whatever they go up against. "Taking on an illithid city" is crazy, even *with* an illithid slayer. I'd say about 10-20% of those illithids have levels, mostly in psion. Pick up the Lords of Madness, Book of Aberrations (great book) and use the illithid in that as it'll correctly have their favored class of psion. The MM can't do that as they assume that you don't have any Psionic books to go off of. And you don't always have to "raid a city" to get a good CD15 challenge for your party. There are raiding parties, maybe even monstrous adventuring parties roaming around. Read up on Lords of Darkness FR supplemental. It goes into detail of all the bad guy organizations, like Cult of the Dragon, Zentarium, Red Wizards. Anyone of those can have mid to high level agents that can offer a great challenge to your party. Add in some monsters like dracolichs for the Cult, assassins, etc for Zents, summoned monsters/devils/demons for Red W's. You can also let an expedition into Myth Drannor, with the party not even realizing what they're getting themselves into. Maybe a Cult of the Dragon boy in good everyday clothing hires/implores the party into a plot that will inadvertantly lead into Myth Drannor, or some dragon's lair. The Cult cell might have a dracolich's phylactery that they're trying to get a dragon corpse for. They trick the PC's into getting one for them. A week later the dracolich is sent by the Cult cell. When CR is needed, give 'em levels, or advance them with more HD. :D |
| Grumsh One-eye05-06-05, 02:12 PM | Have them exlore some ruins, throw a lot of vampires at them to distract them then bam drop em in a portal straight to the first level of the abyss and lock the door on the way out. Then feed em some story about another portal located in the keep of some major demon. Throw em into the blood wars. See how much they like fighting two never ending lines of demons and devils. by the time they get back, if they get back, they'll kiss the ground, retire and open an inn. |
| msatran05-08-05, 03:49 AM | Really, here's the secret. These guys are all cocky and think that they're tough, so here's what you do. Possible scenarios for 15th level characters in the Realms for this particular group. How about the Kraken Society? The Kraken Society has it's tentacles into everything. For the Illithid Slayer? May I recommend the following creature. It's CR 19, and it made a 20th level party scream like horror film women. Here it is: Mind Flayer Mummy Monk 9. That's right. You heard me. Mind Flayer Mummy Monk 9. One of my players even hates the SOUND of those words. Best of all, he gets no bonuses, because the creature's type is now undead. :) Other strange choices include: A trip to Ascore to recover something from the dark pyramids. This is never fun. Send them to the River of Gems. You can get all the gems you can harvest in an hour or so...provided that you can defeat whatever guards the Phaerimm have placed there. I did this to my party. They keep going back. The encounters keep getting worse. Above all, focus on your story. You don't have to beat the heck out of the PC's every session just to keep them interested. |
| Interested205-09-05, 07:20 AM | In what books can I find Ascore and the River of Gems? |
| Ohtar Turinson05-09-05, 10:43 AM | I recommend clashing with the Shades, or the Twisted Rune. Both are very powerful organizations- one a small empire, the other an ancient Cabal of powerful undead that very few know anything about. Boith make excellent villians, depending on location- The Rune has unwitting agents all over Amn, Tethyr and Calimshan, and Shade's agents could be found anywhere where there was once Netherese settlements. |
