How does a lich become a lich (references would be great)?

Also, can a someone be forced into becoming a lich?

Thanks for any help.

The lichnee process in the Realms is most fully described in REF5 Lords of Darkness (http://store.yahoo.com/svgames-store/tsr9240esd.html).

A lich must be able to create it phylactery, so the prospective lich needs the Craft Wondrous Item feat, a caster level of at least 11, 120,000 gp, and 4,800 XP to spare (all from the MM).
And no, a being must be willing to become a lich (although I suppose one could be tricked into it as well).

You can be turned into a Lich against your will.
The Wizard Akhlaur did it two times in the counselors & kings novels.

MM states: The process of becoming a lich is unspeakable evil and can be undertaken only by a willing character.

Except then how do you figure in the good elven liches, that are realms specific? And there were also some neutral/good liches who weren't elves in the old material.....

Yep, good liches exist in the realms, at least according to MoF.

It was the must be willing part I was trying to point towards..

Good liches must use some other metode then killing small children and virgins to gain there undeadlife..

...the fullest description of the lichnee process for archliches is the original archlich writeup in SJR1 Lost Ships.

In my campaigns I just have them follow a similar procedure to that of the dracolich in the FRCS. It makes sence to me that becoming a lich should be almost universal - a dragon becoming a lich and a human doing it shouldnt be much different.
