| Trevelyn RedScale11-28-03, 12:53 AM | I was told long ago about there was a race of people living on toril's moon. that the visable portion was a magical shield, and that the inhabitants are terrified of the peoples of Toril. What books might site anything along these lines, and what if any of this is accurate? |

What books might site anything along these lines, and what if any of this is accurate? I'm not sure on the shield part but every thing else is true. It was written up in the Realmspace sourcebook for Spelljammer. They are called Selunite's and they fear a attack from Toril. Undermountain:Stardock also takes place on Toril's moon, after a brief part in Undermountain. |
| Wooly Rupert11-28-03, 01:39 AM | The shield is actually a giant illusion provided by Leira. It makes the visible side of the moon appear to be barren and lifeless, just dust and craters -- much like our own moon. And like our own moon, Seluné is tidally locked with Toril -- so the same side is always facing the planet. The dark side of the moon is never aimed at Toril. Since Leira is their patron, that's what the inhabitants call the moon. They have no problem with outsiders, except those that come from Toril. Now, since Leira is no longer around, I have no idea what's going on with the moon -- it's never been addressed, to my knowledge. I think I shall ask the esteemed Mr. Baker about that... |

I guess maybe I shouldn't mention Realmspace has other planets besides Toril?..... :) I have the Realmspace supplement... I bought it long ago just because it had to do with FR. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise as I totally hated Spelljammer. In short, it's not because this stupid moon people concept was there a long time ago that it makes it all good... face it: moon people worshipping Leira concept is totally stupid. Let the moon be the freaking moon: a barren wasteland with no interest whatsoever. Mr. Baker et al: I really hope you never ever never revisit that horrid Spelljamming concept in 3.X, 4.X or whatever. And don't license it out either. The concept really, really sucked. I got myself suckered into a Spelljammer campaign in 1995 or 96... it was one of the most painful thing ever. Finally got my balls together and told the DM I didn't have the "appropriate amount of time to be part of this wonderful campaign." |
| Iakhovas11-29-03, 11:30 AM | As with many controversial topics, you'll always find a group of people that don't share your opinion. I for one enjoyed Spelljammer immensely. It wasn't the focus of my campaign, but it was fun for a one-night diversion here and there. I'm not sure why you find "moon people worshipping Leira" a stupid concept Purple Dragon Knight. It's no more stupid than any other fantastic element of the Forgotten Realms. It's like saying: "evil elves living deep under Toril worshiping a spider goddess is stupid." To each their own, but I also enjoyed Kara-Tur, Maztica, and Zakhara. Anything that expands of the Forgotten Realms is a good thing in my opinion, and Realmspace is just an added bit of flavor. My campaign rarely visits Kara-Tur, but its nice just knowing that it is there. It makes the world seem more vast, more *real*. The same applies to Spelljammer or Planescape. You don't have to send you PCs there, but its just cool knowing it exists. |
| Wooly Rupert11-29-03, 01:16 PM | I quite liked the Spelljammer setting, and would love to see it fully revamped for 3rd edition. That version that was in Dungeon was okay, but they changed it a bit too much for me to really dig it. I got the Realmspace supplement shortly after it came out. I have all the Spelljammer stuff -- boxed sets, modules, supplements, both appendices to the Monstrous Compendium... The only ones I didn't like was The Astromundi Cluster, and Krynnspace. I thought that the Cluster was just a lame concept (though a couple of the ships were cool), and Krynnspace appeared to have been written by someone who didn't even know the Dragginglance setting. It also left out a planet, and was chock full of lame concepts (Little Big Gnome? Gods using planets as crystal balls? :nonono: ) I personally doubt that Spelljammer will ever be revisited, much less revised. But man, it was cool! :D |
| Kuje3111-29-03, 01:27 PM | Well there's a brief mention of the other planets and info from Spelljammer on page 231 of the FRCS, so it might be detailed again some day. Shrug as the others said to each thier own, I have no problem with people living on the moon or elsewhere within Realmspace nor with Spelljammer. |
| Weaver9511-29-03, 07:26 PM | AH! Moon-inites! |
| sanishiver11-30-03, 05:56 AM | Well, I never bought into the whole Spelljammer thing. But, to each his own! I have heard tell of a Netherese Wizard’s abode located on the light side of Selune, that is accessible once a year via a portal he constructed in a clearing within the northern reaches of the Wolf-Woods (later called Cormyr), which is now thought to be a days ride north and east of newly rebuilt Arabel (though its exact location is still not known). Twas said a priest of Moander accidentally found his way to and through that portal while fleeing from agents of the Crown bent on exterminating Moander’s presence in Cormyr, some several centuries ago. What happened to the Priest and the Wizard who built that portal is not known. :whatsthis |

| sanishiver11-30-03, 04:15 PM | Originally posted by Wooly Rupert Do you recall where in the Volo's Guide it is? I just flipped thru mine, and failed to find it... I don't think Volo's Guide mentions anything about Selune, only the location of.. oh what's it called? The Laughing Man or something like that. It's a great big rectangular stone monolith laying length-wise on the ground in a clearing north of Arabel. Sorry I couldn't provide more precise info! :whatsthis |
| Cernunnos12-01-03, 01:37 AM | Didn't especially love Realmspace myself. If only for the fact that the entry for every planet made it sound INCREDIBLY hostile. If the local conditions didn't kill you, the natives would. Don't forget about Elminster's Retreat (or whatever it was called). He has his own little fort floating around on one of Realmspace's air worlds, with some gates to and from it. |

Yup, I've always been amused about El's Retreat since it has a gate to Ed Greenwoods home. :) |

| Wooly Rupert12-01-03, 05:10 PM | Rich Baker has replied to my question... sorta. I asked: The moon, Seluné, is actually a pretty nice place. But the late Lady of the Mists, Leira, had placed an illusion on the near side of Seluné, making it appear about as habitable as our own moon is. So, what happened to the illusion during the ToT, and what's the current status of it? Is Cyric maintaining the illusion, perhaps, and if so, what do the locals know or think about that? His reply: Boy, here's one that I just have to say: I don't know. For some crazy reason, it seems to me that Selune should inherit responsibility for "How does the moon look?" instead of Cyric. If Cyric were in charge of it, it would be a great big Black Sun, wouldn't it? He couldn't pass up the opportunity for promoting himself on a scale like that. This is one of those questions where I just prefer not to give a definitive answer. I haven't had to put something in print about it, and until I have to and therefore think about it seriously, I don't want to tie my hands with a quick answer. |
| Sousinne12-02-03, 04:38 PM | Wow. Such a little footnote in the FR setting gathering so much hostility. Anyway, I have used the moon people well in a Planescape campaign once. The short of it was that since Leira died, she had remained silent. This put the population there in a bad position, especially since they were extremely xenophobic about people from Toril, and so were not likely to go get a new god. So they sent out a priest through a portal, and he ended up in Sigil. And he joined the Athar (unbelievers). And he returned, preaching to the masses... who converted. Which was all good, except that their society started to break down, leading to many troubles to fix, before they had to admit they had been aiming for the wrong thing. They decided to find another god, and settled for Siamorphe after one of the players held a very impassioned speech about her. By the way, the moon people are mentioned in two sources: Realmspace for SJ, and Powers and Pantheons, as a small module attached to the temple of Selune in WD. |

Ah, I'd forgotten that little notation in the Powers and Pantheons... I'd also forgotten that it mentioned Kyri and the others from the AD&D comic. Nifty idea you had, though I don't think I woulda chosen Siamorphe. I'm not sure who I woulda picked. |
| Sousinne12-03-03, 02:02 AM | It was not my choice. As a DM, I merely wanted to see if they could make a speech good enough for the moon people to start worshipping a god. And Siamorphe isn't a bad choice, when it comes to keeping a society going. It made her a lesser deity, too. =) |
