Ok FR guys..I need your help!

I havent had the time I used to have for creating worlds and adventures for my players, so I am now looking towards a campaign setting. Right off the bat, I put down Eberron and Forgotten Realms as a choice. For eberron though I dont really like the psionics in it and the mysterious style of play it has, so im looking towards FR but I have some questions.

1.) I have read many FR novels over the years. If I read the setting will it give me even more lore and info on history and geography of Faerun?

2.) Will I have to convert the book into 3.5 rules and if so is it even worth it and will it affect us much if were still using 3.5.

3.)Why are there soo many books if I buy it I will go mad! Well theres the end of my rant. And what books might be good for a DM not player.

Thanks in advance for answers. Im off to B&N tomorrow!

The setting is much better than novels IMO.

To play in the Realms as a DM you need only the Campaign Setting...better if you also buy the Player's Guide to Faerun to convert the 3.0 rules to 3.5.

Then you will love the Reamls.

Suggested 3e books: Silever Marches, Lord of Darkness and Lost Empires of Faerun...well...every other book is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monsters of Faerun is also requires I think. It gives all the monsters that are described in other books. Without it can be challenging.

Magic of Faerun is useful too. But Don`t think about buying Races of Faerun unless you have all the others. Only thing I found useful in it was Fey`ri statics...

Each of them is good,- just buy which comforts your gaming best-

Monsters of Faerun is a good book, I love it but it is not required...and now, with 3.5e, they are reprinting all the monsters in the new books.

Magic of Faerun has a lot of interesting lore, another good book but far from being essential. Unless you want a magic heavy campaign (quite a good idea in the Realms) :D

Silver Marches is a good book but useless unless you set your campaign in there too.

We can not categorise it in that way. That can make Lords of Darkness useless unless you have bring many encounters with organisations

But starting your fist campaign in Silver Marches is a good choice too :D

See we are right in both... :pint:

Ok thanks for all your help you have provided me, expecially about book suggestions. For the players guide for converting, I looked it up and it got horrible, horrible reviews, so can you use the campaign setting and 3.5 phb rules and still run FR smoothly?

And if not, how long does it take to convert the book?

Sorry for more questions. :P

No problem for more questions...

It depends. I didn`t have any difficulties. As long as you are having fun while converting time will not be a barrier.

I would have pointed to the free download stuff if you want lots of lore that doesn't have to be converted over (much).

Well, I found the book not so horrible...I like the new regional feats system, the Planes description and the reworked prestige classes.
It does not worth all the price but could be usefull.

Thanks for your further help guys. I got the FRCS and heroes of battle which replaced players guide to faerun. I dont really think I will need it, and what I need to convert I will convert me self!

Thanks for your help :P

I recently started a new FR campaign and have not had any problems with the 3.0/3.5 edition snafu. In fact, I only have the 3.5e Player's Handbook at the moment, and I use d20srd.org for 3.5e monster stats when necessary. The biggest changes are to skills and feats, and some class related changes (Ranger hit dice, for instance). Changes to monsters were very limited, I mostly noticed just damage resistance and some things like poison effects.

Also, I seem to remember somewhere seeing suggestions for substitute monsters if you don't have Monsters of Faerun. Maybe that was Unapproachable East?

BTW, I started with just the FRCS and only started purchasing additional books once I decided which region I wanted to base the campaign and what additional info I needed to know.

Good luck with the campaign, and remember to have fun! Don't over plan in the beginning, it will all work out as time goes on.

Cheers,
ct
