What would you guys put into the dungeon of a Temple of Loviatar?

My players are coming up on the Grand Finale of our campaign. Their patron's wife has been kidnapped and taken to the Temple of Loviatar to be tortured in the dungeon of the Cathedral. They need to go in and get her out. It is High Harvesttide and the High Whipmaster and his clergy have kidnapped a number of people from the area (Ordulin) in order to use their pain essences as power to fuel the Apotheosis of a former Paladin of Tyr into the next Maiden of Pain's avatar.

What kind of monsters and/or traps would you expect to find guarding this very special ritual? I've come up with Gargoyles and Leather and chain-wearing Flesh Golems, but am flush out of other ideas.

Please help!

I would suggest you pick up a copy of Book of Vile Darkness.

ALL kind of evil things you want to put in a Loviatar dungeon is in there.
Corpse creatures and Corrupted Creatues.. evil magic items.. evil drugs, dark speach, malignen sites, fetishes and addictions, torture devices, execution eqipment.. everything a good little boy could wish for ;)

Kytons could be nasty depending on their level.

Having just recently flipped through the Book of Vile Darkness, I would have to second what Cunning Linguist said. Lots of nasty and thouroughly evil and painful ideas in there.

Book of Vile Darkness is a good book. What level are the PC`s?

Trap Idea:
I had this crazy trap that I used in an adventure, nothing special but tons of fun. When the trap was triggered animated chains that were razor sharp would fly out of the wall/ceiling/floor etc. If a chain hit, then damage was dealt and the chain could attempt to grapple. If the grapple was successful then the charcter would suffer damage every round until the grapple was broken and either be:

a) If 3 or less chains:
The chains would slowly drag the character into a floor pit with Blade Barrier cast in the pit. I think I used something like 3 or 4 rounds for my PCs until they were "deposited" in the pit.

b) If 3 or more chains: The character is pulled limb by limb in opposite directions (quatering). If the chacracter cannot break enough grapples to get to 3 or lower at the end of 2 rounds then the character is ripped apart, causing instant death. Raise Dead dosen`t work too well on a character in pieces.

The PCs in my campaign were in the 8th to 10th level range when they encountered these traps and they were scared to death of losing their characters after encountering the first such trap. I would tone this down if the PCs are lower in level but if they are higher than you could get really nasty with it.:smirk:

Dungeon #90 has a FR superadventure called Tears for Twilight Hollow. It's a massive underground temple of Loviatar, among other things. I've run it for a group, I'd recommend you try and find it.

Unfortunately, the game takes place this Sunday and I have neither time or money to get the Book of Vile Darkness or Dungeon #90 before then. Damn. I should have asked this question two weeks ago.

kgiggles: I love the trap idea, I will definitely use it!

Any ideas to get me inspired are most welcome.

Hmmm...I'm thinking of an alarm system that is based on some creature that can scream really loudly sitting in some kind of torture device that is activated by intruders.

What creature could I use?

Thanks for the replies.

Perhaps a poor tortured sirine would suit well enough for the screaming?

1. Concealed pit traps filled with lots of nasty little oozes!
2. Anything with spikes
3. Devil head torturer (a la MPFC spannish inquisition)

Even if you can't get BoVD in time for the campaign, I'd still recommend you get your hands on a copy, even just to read. If there's a RPG club or something in your area, join one or two and trawl their library. Inspiration++ for BBEG and other folk the party loves to hate.

Yeah, it would seem a must have. My next campaign will feature a very twisted necrophiliac necromancer and from the reviews of Book of Vile Darkness I read it sounds like this kind of subject matter gets some treatment.

Ooh, Devil headed torturer. Good idea. Speaking of devils, what kind of outer-planar entities woul priests of Loviatar be able to summon. Who would Loviatar hang out with?

I'll check out the devourer too. Maybe the Siren will work if the devourer doesn't.

If you'd still like more info email me, I have this sick twisted mind that would get me kicked off the boards if I posted my worse ideas.
