| boowho04-15-05, 06:46 PM | does anyone else play Forgotten realms as a low magic setting, or is it just me? Magic weapons in my game are very hard to come across. if the PC's do get a magic weapon or item it won't come without great effort. but when they do get one it's a powerful one, maybe with intelligence or a spirit trapped inside, it's not a sword +1 or something. They can't just walk in to a town a buy a bunch of healing potions and crap, well maybe if they are in Thay. I like to give my games a more Conan type feel. like there's nothing a sharp blade and strong will can't over come. |

And indeed, I've always seen my games as something of a cross between Bob's Hyborean Age and Ed's FRs. In fact, when I first purchased FR back in the mid to late 80's, I bought it because, for some strange reason, it reminded me of REH's world. Maybe it was the picture on the box?!?!? The first memorable pc's that we ran in that world were a couple of wild Morayans who travelled everywhere from Tethyr and Calimshan to the Western Shaar and Vilhon Reach to Scardale and Yulash, as sell swords. Stradidar and the Reacher. The Brothers of Doom. Ahhhh, the memories!!! |

I play the Realms with plenty of magic: items come at about a standard or slightly higher-than-standard rate when it comes to finding them during the adventure, but most good size towns have at least some merchants who sell some magic items. In truly big cities like Waterdeep, or in cities in magic-rich countries like Thay and Halruaa, its easy to find someone selling magic potions, weapons, armor, scrolls, and even wands (obviously, the bigger the city or more magic-rich the area, the more likely you are to find more powerful items). Special weapons/armor (such as a Frost Brand or Holy Avenger) and more powerful magical items (rods/staffs) are still rare, and nigh impossible to find in any place shy of magic-rich regions (repeat: Thay/Halruaa/ect., and still not easy to track down there) or a horde equivalent to that of a Dragon, but otherwise magic is common enough. Little places (i.e. farming villages, non-mercantile regions, ect.) are still devoid of magic (shy of perhaps a local wizard) of course. But otherwise magic's common enough, at least lesser magic. And wizards, sorcerers, and clerics are all over the place: even the little towns have either a local deranged cantrip-hurling wizard or a temple with a cleric or two that can use minor spells.
