It appears that the information needed for FR magic is in the campaign setting book. So what is the purpose of the Magic of Faerűn accessory?

Yes. This thread was somewhat inspired by the RoF thread with almost the same name, sorry for the 'ripoff', but I felt it would be fun to hear others opinion about MoF.

Basicly I find the book to be; prestige classes (Where Gnome Artificier felt to be the only really interesting one), more spells, more feats, more monsters, more items, and a couple of locations.

None of this really adds to the world. The only parts that would be somewhat useful is the first two chapters, that is basically the same information available in the FRCS chapter about magic.

If you have found a use for it, let me know.

As I said on the other thread. I mostly use the Fey Crossroads and the Mage Fair info and also yes the items.

Yeah, it just adds in PrC's and spells, for the most part. There are a lot of FR unique spells that are 2E. That book is suppose to update a bunch of that for 3E. I wished that there were a lot more conversions of older spells. There is a slew of old FR spells that could really be converted. If they had added 100 more spells and made it hardcover, I would have paid more for it.

I haven't gotten a lot of use from it.

I use it all the time, especially when creating spellcasting NPC´s and outfitting them with magical gear. Concerning prestige classes, I think the book is just right. I can´t imagine my campaign without the Gnome Artificer, the Guild Wizard, the Master Alchemist and the War Wizard :r:

Also, Chapter 4, Places of Power, has some very good ideas.

The book is very useful for some basic PrCs and the aditional spells but I agree it would have been really nice if they had added a bunch more spells or perhaps talked a about spell research and variant spells at low levels ( ie deeloping an electrical energy version of fireball before you gain the substitute energy feat etc.)

Also in the back of the book there is more information regarding the gems and adding gems into wands to improve the effectivenss of the wand. It covers the different precious stones in the realms that are listed but not shown inside the FRCS book. I have found that pretty useful plus the spells are quite nice.

Well well, judging from the input I guess I should reevaluate my opinion and give the book another chance...

Once again I will say that it depends on your definition of "really need". As all of us have different styles of playing, some of us may be DMs, and we play in very different campaigns we will all have a different definition of "really need".

This said can I request that you keep this debate friendly and polite ... don't ram your opinions down people's throats and allow others the right to have their own opinions. Thanks

No offense by pointing that out, but considering the message right before yours, and how I personally treated 'the other thread' I feel that request was uncalled for :(

I wouldn't say you 'need' it, but it certainly gives a lot added value to your FR campaign IMO. It's one of the better supplements in my opinion.

Why not buy it (or at least sit down at a bookstore and page through it) and make your own opinion?

Oh... I have it! I havnt read it through yet, just browsed it through a couple of times... My initial opinion was that it didnt offer anything that would enlighten my campaign, even thou I have a wizard player. I started this thread to know if the ones that read the book from cover to cover felt the same.

Both Magic and Races are surveys of the established lore with rules conversions and some new material. The opening chapters of Magic are not basically the same information as in the FRCS, and there are sidebars and other new material by Ed throughout. For those with the pre-3E books, it's not as exciting a work as great books like Volo's Guide to All Things Magical and Secrets of the Magister, but it's not too objectionable in itself apart from the lessened emphasis on the stories of magic items.

I find this to be the most useful book outside of the core 3. I use it even more than the FRCS book. The magic items and spells alone make it worth buying!

Magic of Faerun is very useful if you want to include FR staples like Spellfire, the Black Blade of Disaster, moonblades, etc.

If you don't want to include those things and others, I suppose Magic of Faerun will collect dust on your shelf.

I carry it with me to every gaming session. It's a must have in my campaigns.

i personaly think that it helps alot in my campains...it has dozens of very usful magic iteams...i did not think that the prestige classes were usful at all but i like to play a straight wizard/arcmage...the spells were not that useful...for spells and other wizard elemants i would suggest the ultimate arcane spellbook...this was really helpful

To clarify ... my request for people to behave themselves was not targeted at a specific person. Like all my public, posted warnings it is a general request aimed at all. If I need to warn an individual in 99.9% of cases this is done in private. Since a very similar thread deteriorated into a flame war I think it was just common sense for me to try and stop the same thing happening here. I am very glad it hasn't ... bunches of roses and a round of applause for everyone

One of the best.

Each time I st down to browse MoF, I consistently get new ideas for my campaign and some of the higher level spells have saved my players butts more than once.

Hello Everyone,

Since I first picked up Magic of Faerűn back in 2001, it has become one of the few books besides the Core Rulebooks to always have a place at our gaming table.

On a side note: Despite seeing heavy use, my copy of this (soft cover) book is in relatively great shape. The binding is fine, no pages have come out, the cover and a few pages are slightly dog eared and that’s it (knock on wood).

I think the most overlooked part of the book is the section on Spellbooks. With it, you can turn this in-game statement, “You open the chest and find the Wizard’s spellbook” into, “You open the chest and find a heavy looking tome whose cover is made of hard iron, and whose pages appear to be made of magically compressed bone. The tome rises into the air seemingly of its own accord and then stops, floating in mid-air before you.” …and know precisely what the GP value of the materials and levitation magic are.

My players use MoF mostly for spells (Prismatic Eye and Simbul’s Spell Matrix, Sequencer and Trigger chief among them) and PrC’s. I use it for rolling up magic items and also for spicing up magic items (by adding unique materials or gem components).

:)

Here's what I do with Magic Of Faerun:

I use it, and E.N. Publishing's Arcane Strife, as sources of new magic, plot devices, and ideas for my Players to encounter in their Realms game. It gives me a ready-made source of stuff to impress the players, and it makes the rather powerful elements of these two books quite special when they do appear.

Otherwise, I limit my players to JUST the PHB and DMG, and the Forgotten Realms book for classes, feats, spells, etc. They still have plenty of room for choice, and they appreciate the neat tidbits when they pop up.

No, but it may be helpful.

Absolutely. It's my second Player's Handbook when I'm playing a mage PC in Faerun.

Of course you need it. You need every Forgotten Realms based accessory out there. Otherwise there won't be any more and we'll see a deluge of Eberron based accessories.

P.S.

Sorry for mentioning the E-word.

Excatly! And please FineasBoggs, don't ever scare us like that. Some of us have a weak heart. Or no heart at all....

But if you think that you don't NEED the Magic of Faerun (I like it personally) then don't BUY it! Just mosey to the store with a pen and some paper and quickly copy all the interesting stuff up behind the shelves and make a run for it. Works for me.

I'd say, it depends.
It's full of good stuff, but still paperback and damn expensive here in Denmark.

My next purchases are probably MoF and/or LoD.

I would agree that the paperback was poor planning. But it does have good material in it and is one of the more useful accessories out there.

As for the price, there are always ways around paying retail. I get all of mine for 44% off retail, so it's much more reasonable.

Its all been pretty much said here and I'm in the same boat, it's one of my most used books outside of the Core books and FRCS.

a Better book on magic than Blood and Tome IMHO.

So I suggest you grab your copy off the shelf and read through it.
