I was thinking, is it possible to increase your ability scores permanately?

I'm not talking about say magical gauntlets for dexterity or a girdle for strenghth Im talking about like some body augmenting spell or potion.

Maybe some kind of gauntlets that after being used for a while give permanately enchance the wearers fighting ability.

Have any of you heard of such a thing?

Wish (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/wish.htm) is one of the only ways I'm aware of. There's also something about some kind of ultra-super-duper-secret orchard on a celestial plane with a really ridiculously strong gnome super-mage orchard-keeper who refuses to let anyone, no matter how Good, have a nibble, unless they help him save the orchard from destruction. Then he only lets them have one fruit. But yeah, just go with Wish.

There is a spell in 2e L&L in the Greek section that allows this - it's called enhance. So head on over to Impiltur and try to find yourself a priest of Posidon (there used to be some). If you can't find any, then maybe a kindly DM will allow a priest of Saint Dionysius to have it, or a priest of Tymora or Beshaba may still have an old copy laying around from back in the 'Tyche' days.

Enhance

Alteration
level: Priest of a Olympian God 8/Greek Wizard 8
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: One Hour
Range: Touch
Target: Creature Touched
Duration: Permanent
Saving Throw: None

. When casting this spell, the Wizard rolls 1D4 and adds that number to the target's attribute. The attribute effected is the choice of the caster, and the effect is permanent. The target gains all of the appropriate bonuses and special abilities associated with his new attribute score. After the spell takes effect, the caster loses a number of Constitution Points equal to one greater then the number of points he bestowed upon the subject. This spell may never be used more then once per attribute.
. Any time the spell is cast, there is a basic 30% chance that it will backfire. This chance is modified by -1% for each level of the caster. A 16th level wizard, for example, would stand only a 14% (30-16=14) of backfire. W#hen the spell backfires, the Wizard loses 1D4 points in the attribute score he was attempting to modify.
. The material component of the Enhance spell depends upon the attribute score that is being modified:

Str: The horn of a Black Bull
Wis: Two wing feathers of an Owl
Int: The tusks of a boar
Dex: The whiskers of a cat
Con: The claws of a bear
Cha: A lock of hair from a women with a Charisma of 16 or more

For obvious reasons, it is pretty hard to get someone to cast this spell, even if you are lucky enough to find someone who has it. I've only slightly modified it from the 2e version (there used to be limits to attributes, so I changed it to the 'once per attribute' thing). Personally, I would also allow a person to add 1D4 inches to a character...

I'm talking height here, don't get any funny ideas. That would be the Male Enhancement spell. ;)
