map scale question [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-24-07, 11:32 AM Disclaimer: Mostl ikely all of you have noticed this before so it may sound like a newbie question. However, I am a newbie, I got the forgotten realms book just a week ago.

I was looking at my big forgotten realms map (the one in the back of the book) and at the one on page 117 of the book (it sohws the dalelands and surrounding areas) and I noticed that it looked liek they wer not at all on the same scale. I got out my ruler and sure enough something was messed up. The in book ap says that harrowdale and scardale are 40 miles apart. The poster map says they are 90 miles apart! and it's not just for this location it's everywhere on the map. Could someone please tell me which one I should follow? I'm stumped :confused:

03-24-07, 04:12 PM Interesting, hadn't noticed that before... If you really want to add to the confusion, consider that according to the FR Interactive Atlas from 2e, they're 60miles or so apart... safest bet, split the difference and go from there. ;)

You are quite right.

However, the folded big map's scale on the back of the book is the correct one.
Not the small ones on the pages inside of the book.

You should always refer to it when studying distances on the Realms.

How do I know?

I happen to possess quite all the 2nd edition books and I just use those maps as a reference.The correct scale to which even those maps are conformed is the one the big map on the back of the book of the 3.0 campaign setting uses.

Yes, it is odd that the Faerun maps aren't correctly scaled in between them from edition to edition to the interactive Atlas.

However, I am a big fan of Karen Von Winstad's mapping works, and so I'd recomend buying the Forgotten Realms Atlas book (written by her) for a better and more accurate scaling.
